Title: Your first Alty away game
Post by: Paul Cain's Chip Pan on May 22, 2011, 09:30:01 PM
Can you remember your first Alty match away from Moss Lane?

Mine was Stafford away in 1991. I think I was too young to realise the importance of the occasion at the time but I remember being amazed at the number of Alty fans that were there and assuming that we always took that many fans to away games! I also remember being gutted because I'd got so used to seeing us win nearly every week up until that point.

Wigan Athletic at Springfield Park in 1976. No idea what the score was though

Went to Wigan away with my dad, parked up ad queued up and very nearly entered the RL ground. Finally arrived at Springfield Park just in time to stand at the terraced end. Odd ground with a main stand straggling the half way line and the opposite end having a small shelter at the top of a huge grassy bank. Difficult accents even so local to Manchester.

Mine was either Northwich away in 1989 or Chorley away in 1989...

First game of any distance was Wycombe away in 1991 with Jimmy Hardman and Daz Rimmer. We lost 3-0...it didnt look like we'd go 28 games unbeaten after that!

A game at Loakes Park, High Wycombe late 80's when we were living locally and I was at school in the town.  Still scared from that season they went up.....

Macclesfield about 1961 ? Remember thinking it was a sh*t hole (a view which persists) and we lost 2-0.

Guiseley away - can't remember the year but we'd already gained promotion and the players were all a little 'worse for wear' so to speak. About 12 years ago?

First away match was away Ellesmere Port Town in August 1972.  It was a midweek match, we got lost on the way arrived late and saw Alty battle to a 2-2 draw.  There were a number of future Alty stalwarts playing for Ellesmere Port that night - Mickey Brooke, Gerry Casey to name but two.

My first Saturday away game came 5 days later at Fleetwood Town, a 1-1 draw.

I didn't actually see Alty lose away from Moss Lane until our 3-2 defeat at Edgely Park to Macc Town in the CSC semi final later that year

Macc away, must have been around 90-91. It was 0-0 or 1-1 cant really remember much other than thinking that macc was a really weird place and seemed lost in time.

20 years on I can only say that a seed was planted that day and a horrible acidic weed of hatred grew from said seed.

We got beat 2-0 but still went up? I remember that game, I was about 7 and a half. Think it was 1999, I'm sure Cult will prove me wrong though...  :)

That would have been May 1999, we'd secured promotion by beating Emley 1-0 on the Thursday Night, after which everyone duly got absolutely legless, the game at Guiseley was on the Saturday and we took about 300 over. Other than we lost 2-0 I remember nothing about it. :D

My first away was, like so many others, Macc about Christmas 1988/89. I think we lost 1-0, it rained and they had Alan Zelam in goal, a man I soon grew to hate.

Assuming Leatherhead in 1978 doesn't count as an away game, then the first away game I remember is the first of the two FA Cup games at Blackpool - Nov 1984 I assume. I was in the home end with my grandad for some logistical reason and we almost got lynched at the end of the game when he started waving his walking stick in the air.
Younger readers may not understand this, but we used to win FA Cup games, even away from home.

Runcorn in the FA Trophy semi final second leg in 78.  I remember no-one could believe that Runcorn charged the then extortionate price of £1 to sit in the main stand (a metal hut really). A 1-0 win courtesy of Mal Bailey's header took us to Wembley :). I seem to remember my dad driving the wrong way on the Runcorn Expressway after the game and us ending up in somewhere obscure like Widnes

Boxing Day 1972 - Macclesfield Town 2 Altrincham 3. An Eric Shreeves double and an Andy Windsor penalty. Two up at half time, Macc get it back to 2-2 and we nick it in the last few minutes - quality. Got some 'Munich' Subbuteo goalposts for Christmas (the ones with the blue and red nets), flick to kick!

That macc game in 72 was the first time I saw Alty win away.  It was blowing a gale, and with the winds at our backs we went in 2-0 up at half time.  We didn't think 2 would be enough and sure enough it only took macc 10 minutes to even the score.  We were under the cosh for the rest of the game until a break away earned us a pen which andy Windsor put through the keepers legs

Southport away, only a blurred memory, terrible game in blustery conditions, we were awful, Lance Key was in goal and one of his goalkicks was joked to be the teams best effort on goal, 1-0 port maybe, any archivers recall this one, 8/9 years ago maybe.

That would be the second relegation season we lost 2-0 but got in 0-0 at half time but should have been 5-0 down. Leroy chambers was a poor excuse for a winger and southport missed a hatful of chances.

Probably makes me sound like a glory hunter but I think it was the Fa cup game at Everton in 1975.
I was at school with Noel White's son and we got on the director's coach and sat in the director's box at Goodison.

Just as a contrast .... Latest away game was at FGR in April ......

My son is at John Hampden - doing GCSE's, last Alty match was away FGR.

in this weeks Eng Lit exam, set book Fever pitch, Russell wrote an esay about the differences between him and Nick Hornby:

"the author liked going to Highburyto see Arsenal with his dad, whereas my father drags me to watch Altrincham against my will!"

After last season, i have to say its against my will sometimes as well

My first was to Macc (March 1 1969) courtesy of good old Altrincham Coachways - we lost 2-1. Still remember going down to their little office opposite the Vine to book - and the fear of losing either the top (for outward travel) or the carbon (for return) copy!

My 1st game away was in about November 1978 at Boston United.

We won 4-1 too in the last season of the NPL for us.

I think i remember the game was played in thick fog & nobody could see who had scored.

That was the game we were all drinking bottled Boddies on the coach and I was desperate for a slash, told the driver somewhere around Mansfield that loads of us needed a toilet and he stopped by a public park and embarrasingly just me got off! I needed another 15 miles on but decided to breath deeply and not mention it.

That was also when they were rebuilding parts of the ground and there were piles of bricks everywhere. We had a bit of bother on the way in (and out I rememberl) and I recall taking a brick with me each time I made further and several visits to the gents. Not big or clever but their fans were always foul.

Not sure it really counts, but FA Trophy final when we lost to Enfield in the early 80's. I was like 12 or 13 yers old and my parents let me go on the Alty coach on my own, after a big fight as they were worried about whether I would be safe.

Years later, as a parent, there is no way I would let my kids go to Wembley to watch Alty in a Final without me :)

In domestic competition it wa Stafford in the early 90's but can't remember why I went. Kinda remember it being a big match though!

On that basis Enfield trophy is also my first game - on my sisters 7th birthday.  we lived in huddersfield at the time she didn't enjoy her day, especially when it went to extra time!
