I have been informed by the wonderfully-named Ed Upright at When Saturday Comes that their next issue is scheduled to include an article on the Birmingham City v Altrincham FA Cup Third Round tie back in 1986.

The publication is No. 272 and is due to appear on Saturday, 5th September 2009.

I provided him with some photographs and accounts of that famous night, as it really is about time that this outrageously-neglected feat of giant-killing began to receive its due recognition.

I believe there are two main reasons why it gets overlooked:

1) There is no pro-shot video footage of the game.

2) We are a northern team and the media tends to have a distinctly southern bias.

Great work Cult, I can't wait to read this article!  :)

That night and result were so unbelievably understated and unreported. I was at Newcastle Poly then and the result was only mentioned as an add on at the end of the news, no pictures, details or anything. On seeing the result I called my dad in Timperley who had heard nothing at all despite watching TV on Granada.

I didn't realise "When Saturday Comes" was still going. Anyone know how or where I can get a copy.

Either WHSmith or Tesco usually have a copy.  Its a very good magazine, lots of coverage throughout all levels of the game and refreshingly free of hysteria and hype.

they sell it in my local newsagent, but then i live in that london.
personally i have a subscription to WSC and fnd its the only football magazine that rises above the usual fawning stuff about the premier league

to this day i think its disgraceful that there wasnt even a highlights camera there and so years later everyone remembers sutton v coventry and no-one remembers us at birmingham
still i have my hazy memories of the night, oh how we laughed

the general point is that when the Cup comes round the TV folk are happy to show the Sutton game etc (but haven't made the effort to digitially enhance the grainy Brum V Alty footage), but they very very rarely even mention the far greater upset that we caused.  It's another case of lazy journalism to me.

I beleive the Villa fans still enjoy it though - http://www.heroesandvillains.info/discuss/viewtopic.php?p=1320135&sid=9f025dae9338c4334f793017d5a34be1 - note sure of the tune but...

There is a team called City
They come from Birmingham
They got knocked out the FA Cup by non-league Altrincham

'Cos in the final minute
The referee blew up
And now those blue-nosed bastards
Are out the FA Cup

Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha (etc.)
