Pleased with all the players signed up so far, especially Nicky Clee, James Lawrie and Shaun Densmore. Others under negotiation, hope that includes James Smart who did OK.
Wonder who else they have on the hit list?

Yes very good start.
Particularly pleased that Phelan has re-signed. If we can find a good central midfielder to play alongside him and share the workload I think he could turn out to be an important player next season.
As might McGivern if he can play for us as well as he regularly played against us. Or did our defence make him look better than he is?
Not fussed about Smart. I agree he did OK and given the apparent dearth of left backs he may be the best we can find.
What has happened to Fearon? I liked what I saw of him last year and given the success of Watmore time to give another of the youngsters a go?
-
Really pleased about those who have signed, a good foundation with a few to bring in hopefully, feeling positive about next season.
-
Great start to the summer, well dome management & board.
If we don't keep Smart will Clancy be worth another punt?
Will Fearon still be young enough to play for the youths?
-
Glad Stuart's staying, top keeper.
-
Yeah, we need to sign a few though
Really important to sort the defence out
Important to keep Reeves if we can
Also need upgrade in midfield, not convinced by Phelan
See McGiven more as an impact player off the bench
Would hope Richman and Lynch have only been kept as squad players
Lawrie could be a big plus for us, but he must play on the right
-
Only Coburn, Densmore, Clee and Lawrie should be in the starting XI though.
That said it is at least a base and we've got something to add quality around, more than we had at this stage last season.
And definately better than when Moyo-Modise, Rowland, Adams, Twiss and co rocked up at Woodley.
-
Replace the released squad players with genuine first team players and we have a chance.
-
Pleased that its been dealt with so swiftly
I hope we get a decision on Alty Messi soon, then we have more time to find a replacement if he goes...

So not Phelan and McGivern? Given the excitement their signings caused, they have both perhaps disappointed a little but I think they could be key players for us next season.

More time to gel.

not convinced by either, would keep Mcgiven as impact sub
Think the excitement might have passed me by
-
I have to say that I have been quite spectacularly underwhelmed by McGivern
However, I think Scott Phelan has the potential to be a key player for us if we can 'team him up' with the right midfield partner(s)
-
I fear we may have been a little spoilt with Damians goal haul this season. Leighton McGivern (with every respect to vauxhall) has made the move to a much bigger club in every sense from what he's been used to.Hes scored 4 goals in 7 starts, albeit 3 against Eastwood, and hit 20 goals this season.Theres not a team in the BSN that wouldnt walk over hot coals to secure his signature for next season. This club has been built on hot headed scousers over the years, let's see a few more of them as well.

Richman.FFS. ??? ??? ???

Richman.FFS. ??? ??? ???
I suspect you've not seen him on too many occasions then, or maybe you've only seen him when he's being played out of position. He's not a bad player!
-
I have seen every home match this season and several away. He is , in my opinion, not up to this standard. It may well be the case of "old pals act" that he gets a game. ??? ??? ???
-
Who's old pal is he then?
-
He has been shifted about a bit but I thoink he has got better as the season went on and he is only 22.
He played 37 games for Worcester last season at this level and was young player of the year at Port Vale 4 years ago (thanks Wikkipedia).
The guy isn't Lee Sinnotts best friends son who turns up with his boots...
-
Glad about all the resignings for next season, excellant the club have got it sorted so soon - keep ahead of the game.
I know some seem unsure about McGivern, but give him time to settle in first. Can you imagine the pace we will have up front, aside from Damien Reeves, if we played Leighton and Duncan together - could be a good banker that one, especially if we lose Damien. Sorry but I do not think Leighton McGivern will be a bit-part player next season, he is better than that. Dunan also has huge potential, and I think that Leighton and Duncan together will be pretty awesome. I do hope that Damien stays though, or if not we find a good replacement.
Lee has done well so far with his releases and retains - lets give him and Tols and the board some credit.
-
I also think that, should Damian leave, in a funny way it might benefit McGivern - he'll become the main man, which is what he was at Vauxhall, plus Damian and Leighton are probably too similar to be a natural partnership. If we replace Damian with more of a second striker type, then we might see the best of McGivern.
Clearly though the best thing would be if Reeves stays.
-
Glad to see things happening early , I think Reeves signing would be a massive boost and may help the club attract better players . Matt Fearon finished the season at Clitheroe after playing regularly and Sam Grimshaw played the last six games ( every minute ) for Radcliffe Borough , if well managed by the club these two along with Watmore and Reid are the future and apart from Duncan not the present , in a couple of seasons with Fearon and Grimshaw the full backs and Reid in goal , thats half a defence !!! and free too !
-
Good to see us move swiftly...
So just waiting on Smart and Reeves now I think...
It's a good core group, and atleast 5 (Watmore, Coburn, Clee, Lawrie, Phelan) should be starting most weeks
It's been said before, but having a bit of constancy could be key in our title/playoff challenge next season

This club has been built on hot headed scousers over the years, let's see a few more of them as well.
You were asking for a change of direction this time last year
-
Good start in my view. Id like Smart to sign (don't know what stopping him) but he does need to get fitter.
McGivern hasn't impressed yet but he's the same sort of player as Reeves, so will improve if Reeves does go.
Matt Flynn will be waiting to see if a BSP club make a move. The CB's are going to be the biggest signings that will make or brake next season. God knows how many pairing we had last season but none were good enough.

Out of interest, seeing as you would release the 20 goals a season striker that we got for free after only 7 starts, who would you bring in to replace him?

McGivern? I never said he should be released
-
But you don't think we should be looking for heart on sleeve types? My remark about change in direction was in relation to the bordering on incestuous approach to manager recruitment that's run through the club for decades. Quinn, Ward,Sinnott all on a hiding to nothing due to being relative outsiders in their appointment.People need to get behind the manager, the season has gone, and it was poor by what everyone expected in terms of a promotion challenge. But he's going no where for now, there's more outrage and dissent at us finishing 8th in this league than there was at us getting relegated so miserabley last season despite having so many chances to salvage ourselves.Lets see where we are in October, until then we can only trust that the recruitment policy this year will be better than last year. And that we can tempt a better calibre of player as there's more budget available hopefully, as we aren't paying for "lawn mowers" or bizarre signings on over inflated wages and contracts.

but now you want to see a return to what the club was built on (your exact words)

make your mind up!
how inconsistant

John, the incestuous approach Socrates refers to is the previous policy of appointing ex-players as managers, without regard to managerial pedigree, not about having want it scousers playing for us. Surely that is clear? It is to me. You clearly have some strange agenda pal.

To be fair to John Crewe, he is nothing if not consistent...
-
So you essentially agree with me then mr Crewe
-
I'm pretty happy with that group. It's the makings of a decent squad.
I'm hopeful that Phelan and McGivern will be better after a full pre-season with the team.
As everyone else has said, next season is likely to hang on whether we can put together a decent defence. Unfortunately I think tight defences are built over more than one season.
It would be a minor miracle if we managed to build a miserly defence for the first half of next season from where we are at the moment.
-
I really hope that we have a FULL squad and keep loans to the absolute minimum.
IMO it was the lack of a regular line-up that ruined our chances this season.

It wasn't quite that. It was the poor recruitment that necessitated the constant loaning and choppoing and changing.
That goes for the season before as well incidentally.

NICKY SIGNS UP
In the adjacent photo, we see a sight to gladden Alty hearts as popular wingman, Nicky Clee, meets chairman Grahame Rowley and signs up for his fourth season at Moss Lane.

I thought he'd signed up already?

It's heartening to see Nicky Clee already wearing our away kit for next season.
What a club man.
-
The encouraging bit for me is that these players signed are the ones who I feel have more pride in the club and shirt.

is that in the cafe at the trafford centre

Yet another example of declining standards, as the company is named after its founder, Tim Waterstone. The apostrophe should therefore be mandatory.

If memory serves, until recently Waterstones did have an apostrophe but decided to remove it to save money or be more up to date or some other such cr@p.
