Possible further fixture disruption?
« on: January 02, 2009, 05:13:10 PM »

Our next scheduled home game in the BSP is Torquay United on 24th January 2009.

However, if Torquay defeat Blackpool in their FA Cup Third Round tie tomorrow, I note that the Fourth Round just happens to take place over the weekend when they are due to visit Moss Lane....

Similarly, we are lined up to travel to Kettering on 31st January 2009, which coincides with the FA Trophy Third Round.

Kettering are away at Tiverton Town in the FA Trophy Second Round and so it's conceivable that they could progress in the competition and scupper our scheduled excursion to Rockingham Road at the end of this month.

Let's hope so, that'd mean we could play Vics on a Saturday.

What would you rather have on a Tuesday night? Northwich at home or an away trip to Kettering? I know what the players would prefer!

I'd take the home game all day long.

I was thinking more along the lines of a higher attendance.

I realise that but I suppose there are advantages whichever way you look at it. I consider it highly unlikely that Kettering will fail to progress in the Trophy so it's a moot point anyway.

Even if Kettering progress we won't play Northwich on Saturday 31st.

Vics are at home to Woking that day and both sides have already been knocked out of the trophy.

So, Torquay's victory now leaves us with a blank Saturday on the 24th then.

Burton Albion will be at a loose end on that day, too, now that Kettering have also reached the FA Cup Fourth Round, so we could always bring forward a nice easy away trip to the league leaders....

More lost revenue, Torquay will bring less in midweek than they will on a Saturday.

Might be a good time to play Burton if Clough leaves in the next few weeks.

Also possible that Grays will have a free Saturday as they are away at Histon who could well beat Swansea in the 3rd round.

Histon don't play Swansea until January 13th by which time I suspect our fixture at  Burton will have been set up.

We might be keener to play a home game than an away one though.

When we played Oxford on a sunday we had a great support of over 1800. Is there anychance we could have the Vic fixture on a Sunday, as the majority of City games are on a Saturday and Utd are away on a couple of Sundays later on in January? As we lost out on a load of money New Years Day I believe having the game on a Sunday rather than a Saturday is the only way we could make some money out of the fixture.

This is a very good point...

It is very rare for a fixture scheduled to be played on a Saturday to be brought forward, even though it would make common sense to do so, to avoid possible late season fixture pile-ups.
Even before Christmas I feared we might run into a fixture pile up. Having to reschedule games from Saturdays to midweek is a massive disadvantage to part-time clubs.
Am I correct that the last time we actually got demoted we were in 10th position in Feb, didnt play for about 6 weeks, and only picked up 2 points in the final 8 games played in a very short period?

I'm not sure on the exact time period but we did go a long time without playing a game. Also, just to exacerbate things further, our goalkeepers kept getting injured. We've not quite reached that kind of crisis point yet but it serves as a stark warning that you're never safe until you're over the finshing line (and even then some pikey club from Lancashire can land you with a ridiculous 18 point deduction).
