Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Thoughts on the Season Ahead

I am more optimistic about this season than I have been for a long time.

Definitely a top half finish.

Apparently Paul McManus was held in high esteem at Chester by the supporters and was only released when the club needed to raise money quickly.
He also has silverware to his name, having won a cup competition whilst at Bangor.
I think he would be a great addition to the squad.

At the risk of sounding shallow, he does look like a footballer in that photo.
If you saw him walking down the street you would know straight away what he did for a living, something I fear you cannot say about a few of his new team mates!! :D :D

A Wrexham supporter friend of mine has just bet me a fiver he gets himself sent off before Christmas.
He has past form in that respect, apparently.

I didn't ask the question , but no, of course I wouldn't turn down the money.
The annoying thing is that we probably won't get anyone to offer us any!!

My point is that it probably wouldn't happen to us, yet it does for a team of hoofers like Histon!!

I don't even want to comment on this.
I suppose it's what we are up against.

Altrincham FC First Team / Colin Little for Assistant Manager?
« on: July 08, 2009, 09:09:57 AM »
Obviously we are happy with the assistant manager we already have, and if he should get called away to higher places Kenny McKenna would be a fantastic choice.
However, I reckon Col as player/assistant manager would be great for the club and its' supporters as well.
Has he said anything about what he would like to do when he retires? What a combination GH and Col would be!!

I am looking forward to us springing a few surprises this coming season.
We showed we could compete with the best ( and lose to the worst!!) but so many times we were having the better of games only to lose it at the death.
I don't think it would take much of an improvement for us to get into the top half.

Roll on August!!
I can hardly wait!!

'Just pointing out that to some clubs this will be a disaster, whereas to some others it will be an unfortunate loss. It will impact on each club differently.'

We agree on that!!
I might have been a little bit harsh last night, I don't want to fall out with anyone over this.
All I was trying to say is that this is the situation we are in, let's deal with it as best we can and try to make the best of it.
At least it sparked off an interesting debate!!

A very strange way to look at it!!

I am sure clubs like Halifax, Boston ,Scarborough and others now have a very healthy regard for debt.
You really can't argue that going further into debt than they originally hoped is not a problem. All clubs have to keep an eye on their balance sheets, the ones that don't will at some point wish they had!!

Well, no.....

Teams with turnovers as small as ours will get hurt just as much, teams with bigger turnovers will lose a lot more TV money than us, as they tend to be on Setanta more than us, levelling things out.  Teams with bigger turnovers also normally have higher costs and rely on TV money  more than we do.
Just because they have higher turnovers doesn't mean they make more profit, there are plenty of bigger teams in this league in a worse financial state than us, they will be devastated by this news.
There may well be teams that go under because of this, but I would bet that Alty aren't one of them.
Obviously I would rather we all received the money, but this is the situation we are in, we need to look for positives.
I stand by what I said.

I think there could be a silver lining to this.
OK, so we'll lose the £85000 that everyone gets, but Alty never really made much more than that from Setanta. The more fashionable clubs that are on the TV 7 or 8 times a season stand to lose a lot more than we do.
To put forward an alternative opinion, I reckon this could create more of a level playing field for us to compete on.
