Doing their very best to hand our 1991 Conference title to Stan Flashman's Barnet in return for numerous brown envelopes stuffed full of cash

Link was from the guardian website if you're wondering how the hell I chanced upon it.

I still can't believe we didn't win it that season, the team we had was simply unbelievable! Sadly, I think that was probably our last real chance at achieving league status, but who knows what the future may hold for us?

Still breaks my heart even though I was only 9 at the time.   :(

Imagine if we had filmed all our games back in those days. What a compilation tape that would be!

Three observations:

(ii) Terry Robbins: that 'diminutive' striker from Welling who was another one of those characters who seemed to score against us with irritating regularity;

(ii) Kenny Lowe: a very talented midfielder in ridiculously small shorts;

(iii) If only Alty had signed Mark Carter from Runcorn that season.......

Wed 24 Apr    Lost away to Barrow 1-0
Sun 28 Apr     Lost away to Stafford Rangers 2-1
Tue 30 Apr     Drew away to Slough Town 3-3
Thu 02 May    Lost home to Northwich Vics 2-0
Sat 04 May    Drew home to Boston United 1-1

Our legs ran out of steam sadly.  I remember hearing the Barrow result (school night) and trashing my bedroom.

That season brought so many highlights thou.  The late late winner against Kettering at home where the Golf Road without crash barriers went mental.  Best scenes I have seen for a league game at Moss Lane, even beat the Barnet at home game.

Also remember Kettering town were top of the league for long periods for that season and also blew it.

one of the greatest games ever at Moss Lane , anyone name the mascot  that day ?      some of the teasers will know him well

if you look at the Barnet team it was full of top class players but then again so was ours .

We lost that league at slough

How did Spike Carter slip through our fingers?

I got a copy of that picture off Cliff Hase and it was on my wall at home for many years.  Love it.

The Mark Carter story was incredible.  Runcorn wanted £40,000, John Maunders (pre him trying to close us) put up £20,000 if the other directors could make up the other £20,000.  They didnt and the rest is history.

Barnet signed him to sit on the bench and stop us getting him.

Whatever happens from now until I'm an OAP I'm sure I'll still talk of Showler crossing to McKenna with Jabba mopping up the scraps for years to come.

Ecky we can't forget the away game at Colchester that season.

For me that was the biggest league game whilst following Alty that I have been too.  Around the systematic sign is where I chucked myself over the fence asking a lady copper to sort things out, not in 5 mins but NOW.  Some Colchester fans were a bit premature in thinking the stand should contain a cosmopolitan mix of home, away and neutral fans like they do at Fulham. I really shat my pants during those moments as we all got penned in......
