Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Team Staying Over Before Away Games
« on: February 18, 2007, 07:30:08 PM »
Whilst I get the point of this thread I must say that I think stopping overnight stays for matches such as Crawley would be a false economy.

Yeah Okay so players have to leave work early on a Friday to get the coach down but once they are there they can relax.

When you've sat on a Coach for say 4 to 6 hours and then get off your legs etc are almost always stiff. Arriving the night before allows a nights rest to get the stiffness out of the legs, also it allows for a relaxing morning rather than stressing about getting there.

There is of course another practical point. Say you leave in the morning and allow 4 hours to get to the ground what happens if there are traffic problems or the Coach breaks down? Going to Northwich or Southport or Stafford you have a hope of rescuing your situation. A long trip becomes a nightmare. It is necessary under Conference Rules to exchange teamsheets a set time prior to Kick Off - you can't do that sat on the Motorway and failure to exchange on time can result in a fine.

Let the Management decide what ought to be overnighters - they tend to know the pluses and minuses

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: are our players to honest ?
« on: February 16, 2007, 01:50:18 PM »
I would say yes we are too honest and this is a view I seem to be espousing at most home matches generally in the direction of either Dave Mitten or the fourth Official.

Maybe as well as being too honest our players could be accused of being a bit naive and of not being as 'professional' as some of the teams who visit Moss Lane.

For a player to go down when they have been caught, clipped, nudged, whatever you want to call it is not cheating. The person doing the catching, clipping, nudging etc. is the person transgressing the Laws of Association Football. The player going down, albeit sometimes a bit dramatically, is doing what they're paid for ie attempting to maximise the benefit to their team.Occasionally this necessitates a bit of exaggeration of the contact.

A player who throws him or herself to the ground when there has been no contact or who holds their face feigning injury due to alleged violent conduct is cheating and the Laws of Association Football allow for that player to be sanctioned with a caution.

I know I've been watching Alty longer than some but I can remember us getting many an advantage on the back of Jeff Johnson's ability to, having been tripped, nudged etc. somewhere near the half way line miraculously land in or on the edge of the penalty area as a consequence of a) his 'professionalism' and b) his unbelievable capability for unpowered flight.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Player of the season? so far
« on: February 15, 2007, 11:43:54 AM »
I had an amusing experience in the NWS after the York Match.

Dennis Birch advised me that he had been arguing with people around him (home supporters) who were slagging off Alty players. He said that it wasn't on as they all needed our support and how ridiculous it was that fans picked on individual players for no obvious reason.

I agreed wholeheartedly and mentioned en passant that Jason Gallagher had been the victim of the very same treatment. Dennis wandered off toward the telly muttering something about it only being right.

Very proud to say that I kept an entirely straight face throughout

As someone who works at The University of Manchester and has regular contact with Students I must say that I find the stereotyping of students, no matter how light hearted the intention may be, insulting.

The Students in the Faculty I work in are industrious in the extreme and attend lectures and practicals for many hours in addition to the work they do at home over evenings, weekends and vacations.

Many also have part time jobs to supplement their meagre finances

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: How about 3-5-2?
« on: February 12, 2007, 10:25:12 AM »
Whilst it is obviously concerning that we are conceding goals it is impossible to win a football match without scoring.

Putting a defensive midfielder in is, in my view too negative a tactic.

4-4-2 would be my preferred option

Sorry can I just clarify.

I didn't mean to suggest that you were supporting racism.

What I actually meant to say was that I cannot believe that you intended your post to support racism.

Sorry for that please feel free to Peake (Baldrick Only)

Football, like it or not, and at whatever level can and sometimes does exert a huge influence on the millions who watch, follow and play the game. Sometimes arguably too much influence but hey?

What better way to get over a message such as the anti-racism message or the eat healthily message (AFC Telford Utd?) or getting over the benefits of education or non-smoking or alcohol moderation (all these I believe have been done via sport in general and football in particular) I can't think of one. Every opportunity to reach a mass audience must be utilised to the max.

As a previous poster has said racism is vile. I cannot believe that your post actually supported racism but sorry you still get a Peake from me too

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: This is a excellent suggestion but?
« on: February 07, 2007, 07:13:57 PM »
I agree totally.

I know that the Club is always looking to raise income but the policy of doing things primarily by auction excludes many if not the majority of our supporters who can only really afford to go to the game, buy a programme and a pint and go home.

I feel sure that the people who would doubtless be amongst the possible winners of any such auction are well aware of how valuable their contributions are to the Club but I am also convinced that they would not begrudge someone with less disposable income but who is just as valid and important a supporter having the chance to avail themselves of this opportunity.

Maybe (slightly off the wall I know) STAR could secure one of the places on offer and raffle it amongst its members?

Thanks for your kind words Mr Altrincham,

I obviously didn't make myself clear enough.

I'm going to tell him that any perceived issues were caused by the Home Goalkeeper and that if he repeats it in front of some other travelling support, not so well behaved as our fans there might well be more serious issues to address.

Hope this clarifies things for you?

The individual who perpetrated the action we've all got so steamed up about has been big enough to contact me off forum and is suitably embarrassed by their actions.

The Club, Darren and I will, together with the individual concerned deal with the matter now and so far as I for one am concerned the whole spitting incident is no longer a current issue.

There is nothing that we can do about the behaviour of the Southport Goalkeeper. I do get on very well with the Safety Officer at Southport however and I will be in touch with him to apprise him of the details of events once I have the necessary info to base it on. From what I have heard thus far the Stewards at Southport were excellent, friendly and accommodating and I will include this information when I speak to him.

Cheers

Phill

I am now aware of the perpetrator of the actions on Saturday.

Matter as far as I am concerned, in so far as the forum goes, is closed.

Thanks to the person concerned for fronting up....I'll be in touch

I'mm sorry but there is indeed a need for this thread, and a great need.

Anybody who spits at somebody else is beneath contempt and has no place in Society never mind a Football Ground.

If we just brush this under the carpet then we are no better than the person who committed this despicable act and I know for a fact that I for one (of many, many) am substantially better than that.

Well if there is a need for this thread there has to be an end result. Otherwise there is no actually need for it apart from the fact that you want to continue the saga for a longer time period as the rights and wrongs of it have already been discussed - and there are no rights to it by the way, only wrongs.

Therefore close the thread and move on or take action against the person in question. Continuing talking about it if no action is to be taken is futile. The person I am sure already knows everyone finds his/her actions dispicable.

That is my exact point....When (not if) the identity of the responsible person becomes known I will press for action to be taken against them.

Despite your assertions to the contrary I have no wish to continue this debate, in fact I'd quite like the subject to be closed as soon as possible as it is an embarrassment to the Club I love so if anybody knows who the guilty party is let me know and then it will all be over.

I'm led to believe that Adam Yates actually plays right back for Morecambe so, it could be argued that they DO need a left back.

Still think he'd be better coming to us although the money wouldn't be there of course
