One for Alty Tunnel Steward (and other refs)
« on: February 09, 2011, 07:42:05 PM »

As soon as I'd recovered from the euphoria of last nights goalfest, I realised that Alsager scored their goal in exactly the 90th. minute.

No board was held up (the fourth official actually reffed the second half, not sure what happened to the original guy)  and the match finished there and then.

In the second half there was a 2 minute injury stoppage, 6 substitutions, and 8 goals, so I reckon we should have been looking at "a minimum of NINE added minutes".

Obviously, there was no way the result would have changed in that time, but what would be the official viewpoint on this situation ?

The original ref, who was 74, removed himself from the action after missing two blatant pens in the first half.  I think...

it is up to the ref to set the amount of extra time, if in his opinion there had been none, he is entitled to blow the whistle, in reality, why perservere with the game given the situation

The original Ref sustained a minor injury and was replaced, as Referee, by one of his assistants

The 'junior' assistant duties were taken over by the fourth official

The Laws state that the Referee is the sole arbiter of time so it entirely down to him or her how much added time (if any) is played.

The 30 seconds per goal, caution and substitution that you quote is merely a guideline initially, I believe, disclosed to the media to give some slight clue as to how stoppage time MIGHT have been calculated.

I would have thought (although I obviously can't be certain) that the decision to play only a flat 45 minutes in the second half was a humane and sensible one given the state of the game at the time. I know that I would have done precisely that.

Would it be right in assuming the "humane" card only comes in to play in cup competitions. (Unwritten rule obviously)

If this was a league encounter and goal difference was the issue...9 potential minutes could mean the difference between promotion / relegation etc etc.

I can speak only for myself of course but I would agree that it would only be appropriate in a 'Cup Tie' scenario

Graham Poll said that on Fergie's ten year anniversary of being United manager he said to him he should have bought him a watch.
Fergie just said "Funny coz I was  going to buy you a mickey mouse watch"
