Pretty well my thought Pete.....provided Miller is fit.
-
We just need to batter them from the off because I don't fancy us coming back from a goal down.
-
Too depressing to predict.
-
That team is beginning to look a bit better. I'd still play Patterson at right back for Heathcote and find a place for a fit Simon Richman. But generally thinking, they're the lads I'd be looking at trying to retain next season.

Patterson right back and Newby right wing for me.
-
If Patterson played at right back last night I'd play him there on Sat he looks better there than in midfield
-
The problem with playing Patterson at right-back & Newby wide right midfield is that you then have two men effectively wanting to do the same job. Patterson has the usual curse of the Alty full-back; he appears neither to like nor to be particularly good at defending. Since time immemorial our full-backs have been frustrated wingers! I would have Heathcote at no. 2 as the best defensive right-sided option, & the same consideration leads me to favour McWilliams over Brownhill (just) at no. 3; Newby probably just shades it as no. 7 for me ahead of Patterson. I haven't seen enough of Taylor to give any sort of meaningful opinion, but if Richman is fit I would like to see him paired with Gary Jones in the centre of midfield. If Miller is fit (which I rather doubt) I'd have him playing behind the central striker; if he isn't, then Lawrie can fill that role. Owens as central striker looks to me like Hobson with a bit more heart, but the same limitations - but he's probably the most viable option available at the moment. Patterson, Reeves, Taylor, Lawrie or Brownhill & Dawber would be a reasonable subs bench. McDonald can safely be sent to pasture on Farmer Pace's field in my view; Cain may be better off getting game time at Prescot for now.

Objection Mr Royton! Recent full back Stan Allen was definitely not a "wannabe" winger.
But your general principal applies - which is why we had Nicky Clee at left back a couple of seasons ago

Recent ? Stan was half my lifetime ago !
-
Sorry but I do not rate Heathcote, very poor positioning, panics and just never looks confident. His body language is that of a lad who doesn't want the ball. Paterson right back.I take it Richman is still not fit and Moult suspended? I would go Newby right mid and Miller behind Owens will be a good partnership.
-
Or have Owens up top and have Clee and Miller high out wide so that we could have a midfield 3 of Jones, Taylor and Richman.
-
Patterson the best rb so if we set up 4-4-2 (which I think we will) he's in and Heathcote s out.
If we go 3-4-3 which must be a temptation after last Saturday, Heathcote would be 1 of the 3 cb and I'd play Patterson rwb.
-
How good is Taylor? I haven't seen him play but looking forward to it from the reports on here!
-
Really don't see how people rate Heathcote....he is not good enough for this level. Play Patterson right back and Newby right mid.
-
Personally;
1; Hope game is on
2; Whatever team takes to the hallowed turf, propels us to our first home win of the season. Long over due and would be most welcome.
COYR.

It's glorious here, main bulk of last nights brief dusting has melted and the pitch has been under cover since the middle of the week so it should be fine.
-
Really? When did we invest in covers?
-
Last summer
-
I thought we had borrowed the covers from Lancs Cricket Club?
Good news that we have our own now.
-
There was a picture of them being put down on the main website on weds or thurs this week
-
Bloody hell!
We'll be getting a sprinkler system next
-
We did borrow some last winter. Great news that we've got our own. Well done somebody!
-
Its my birthday tomorrow - all I want is a win !

Totally agree. Heathcote was to blame for last week's goal due to poor positioning. Patterson RB with Newby RM.
Let's get a consistent back 4 for the rest of the season and see what happens.

Pitch inpection 10-30

How embarrassing could this be today? I just want to season to finish. Please.
-
Game over after 9 thriving minutes.
-
Probably need to stop kidding ourselves that things are any better under Doughty.
-

Finish? According to Doughty, the season starts today.

I understand that the manager has to be positive, but things like this just make me squirm even more. The main emotion is embarrassment, isn't it, this year? And our next six games are Chorley, Brackley, Fylde, Fax, Darlington and Harrogate. Can you imagine?
-
Im at a total loss as to why someone who assisted in our relegation and the 2nd 10 game disastrous run is seen as the man to turn things around....2-0 down after 9 mins...really dont think the players are being sent out with correct message in their ears.
Cant believe the damage ny has done...the club is infected...sorry the 1st team is completely infected...good job the club is thriving
-
Same problem as all season. You could have a different manager every match and we'd still have no centre backs.
-

I don't think many fans are kidding themselves,it's just the board.

I think we're at the point now where the blame cannot be put anywhere other than the players. I think it would be a bit unfair to shift it to doughty.
Anyway the first 10 minutes killed us today. Absolutely appalling start followed by an all out assault on Gainsborough's 18 yard box with little end product until sheer force got us over the line with 10 or so to go, and even then it was a scramble.
I thought Taylor was very assured for his first match in this league and would hope to hold on to him for next season based off that where he should thrive.
Clee again was very good
New lad up front very lively but probably should have scored at least one.
It's all academic now anyway. If you can't beat a team 2 places above you in the relegation zone at home then it's all but over with the points total we have. I think Gainsborough were the worst team I've seen us play so far this season as well but if you gift wrap 3 goals for any side which we did today you're not going to win anything.
-
Today cannot be blamed on the management team. 3 individual mistakes cost us. Apart from the first 10 minutes we actually played okay.
-
Despite us not having an "R" against our name in the league table, we have been a 'racing certainty' for relegation since Boxing day and hopefully have been making preparations for an assault on the glue sniffers league ever since
-
Dunham
Between them having scored two and them having ten men, I don't think we scored did we

Hannigan was excellent today as he was last week. Won every header. Can't cover for everyone.

Can i borrow your rose tinted glasses please. That first 70 minutes was a disgrace
-
Agree that Hannigan can't cover for everyone, but he did look more comfortable at left back imo. If the management are going to play Heathcote, he should definitely play at centre back. But we are still short of a tall, commanding presence at the back.
We are down now, but if we want to play for pride, the management need to go a begging league clubs for the missing centre back on loan. We'll continue to concede 3 goals a game otherwise.

First game for 3 months today. We actually looked worse than when I last saw us. Saving myself now for the visit of Halesowen Town come August.
Gainsborough were also piss poor.....we'll probably see them again next year.

Thanks for that Tom ;)

Never did I imagine that I would be so glad to have some diy to get done and miss the game. Feel there may be some more coming on for the next game as well - if anyone wants to lend a hand..........!!!!

I must have missed something. Hannigan won every header, cleared the ball well and passed to his own team mates. Left back? Alty went to three at the back to chase the game but he wasn't left back. If I was a defender in that team I 'd be wondering the midfield offer no protection whatsoever.

With two wingers and two out-and-out strikers, it only left Jones and Taylor to offer that protection. But whilst I appreciate your point, the back four made a string of unforced errors and should have done much better.
-
Frustrating game. If we had not conceded two soft arse goals in the first ten - we would have won 2:1.
We saw some vintage Clee today and reeves looked good for his ten minutest or whatever.
But. We are f**ked and have been down since November.
We are luckless and it hurts.
-
Utterly shambolic for 70 mins. Disgrace

No we wouldn't. If we weren't two goals down we wouldn't have gone long ball and scored.
Clee was not that good yesterday. Yes he was one of our better players, but I think he was much better in the second half against Gloucester. How much that had to do with the knock he took for a two-footed off the floor challenge I don't know. I wouldn't say Reeves "looked good". He hit the bar twice in 3 seconds from less than 6 yards out.
The rest I agree with.

The point I was making was that I didn't see Hannigan making any errors. You could say that he could gave got back in position after winning the first ball but the midfield didn't compete to stop the return ball and no one tucked in behind him.
To answer a previous post the only football I play is 5 a side. I'm going back to lurking in the forum. Posting is too much like hard work.
