Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Defending at Corners and Set Pieces
« on: August 19, 2007, 04:37:09 PM »
Does anybody know why we always have 11 players back in our box defending?

All it means is that if we successfully defend the corner/freekick the ball just comes straight back as there is nobody up front to hold the ball or pressurise the opposition defender.

It also means that the opposition can have 9 players in and around our box. Surely it makes more sense to leave somebody up front.

You'll love the photograph at the top of John Laidlar's report of the game at FGR yesterday then....!

Flynny,

You took the words right out of my mouth!

Are you addicted to daytime TV yet?

Clancy? I could cope with Andy Scott being our left back if he had a sister who looked like that.  :o
I don't think so after what the Hyde supporters said about his performance against Vauxhalls after he was subsituted at half-time.

Here's the quote from the Hyde United Forum:

"Another thing which no-one has mentioned which I think changed the game. If I ever see Andy Scott playing for Hyde again, it will be too soon, he was terrible in the 1st half last night, and a lot of the problems stemmed from the fact that he needed someone to do his job, meaning a central defender being dragged out left, leaving the other exposed. He was at fault for the first goal and rightly carted off at half time. We don't need another Howarth at the club, lets get rid before he gets the chance to do more damage."

I rather like the sound of this chap, who played for the reserves last evening:

"Midfielder Oliver Osbaldeston from Manchester Grammar School and Crewe Alexandra Academy."

He sounds like he would raise the tone of the club considerably....though his surname could be a tricky one to find a terrace song for...

Altrincham FC First Team / Is there a sinister pattern emerging?
« on: August 16, 2007, 01:03:19 AM »
Now, I'm not one for conspiracy theories....but is it purely down to coincidence that Gareth Whalley has been the victim of a, shall we say, heavy tackle in both of our opening fixtures, which on each occasion has resulted in him having to withdraw from the action prematurely?

Earmarked as a potential danger man by any chance?

Is that GH mowing the pitch then?

Only joking....

I've just received a copy of the programme for the Northern Premier League match between Alty and Wigan Athletic on 25th October 1975.....

......and one of the pages has been autographed by none other than DAVE FURNIVALL!

What a legend he was....

Last season we lost to Exeter at home, and lost to Halifax at the Shay.

Compare and contrast......

Incorrect.

We drew 1-1 against Halifax at The Shay on New Year's Day.

How could you forget Peter Thomson's only goal for Alty?!

And with regard to the don't be a semi-pro footballer like I said they are doing it for the love of the game and in many cases the club.

If only that were true.....then we wouldn't need to pay them at all!

Listening to Graham on Clubcall, its clear that he is an Altrincham man through and through.

Was this ever in doubt though?

No Alty diehard doubts his commitment but I do believe that he should apologise for his behaviour and language after the Exeter match.

(I haven't listened to the Clubcall interview, so I don't know if he expresses any remorse during Flynny's discussion with him).

The heart of the whole thing is that the players play for next to nothing.

Now, I know that Alty aren't paying extortionate salaries.....but I think that "next to nothing" is a slight exaggeration!

How many of us after working all day feel like going to training or playing twice a week?

Well then, it's simple...don't be a semi-professional footballer!

We need to pray for it to rain before every match at Moss Lane and then that's one less distraction to worry about.
