Looking at the thread about Dibble and someone mentioning that Lancaster game was the worst defeat in some time it got me thinking!!! when and against whom do you think was our worst ever defeat (for what ever reason)
Mine was either the 0-4 mauling by Macc when they won the league, 0-2 against Accrington Stanley in the fa cup under Gerry Quinn or the 2-1 at Stafford (that game still haunts me)
-
South Liverpool 6 Alty 0 at the late great Holly Park.
I don't even remember the trip home on the trains and bus. Shocked and numb. We were lucky to get nil.
-
I remember being thoroughly depressed after losing the 1982 Trophy final to Enfield at Wembley, but that wasn't a truly awful performance, nor was our 6-0 drubbing in the FA Cup at Turf Moor against a Burnley side featuring a young Trevor Steven among a line-up of experienced pros.
I think I'd nominate losing at Cheltenham to Gloucester City when we discovered just how sh*t Junior Whats-his-name really was, and then having to sit just in front of David Birch on the coach home while he repeatedly declaimed "He's had it has Coburn". Ecky came close to making him walk home.
Another bad one was Eastbourne at Moss Lane when relegation followed capitulation.
-
The defeat at Macc in 1995 was pretty annoying, especially as we'd have won the league if we'd beaten them home and away that season (and other results had been the same). But my worst moment perhaps was not actually a defeat, but when we were 2-0 down to Woking at half time in the home match this season, and things seemed so bad that I almost didn't care any more. By the same token, great credit to management and players for turning it around in the second half and the rest of the season.
I would add about the Lancaster match that it felt really really bad because we had never been relegated before the previous year, the Wigan and Tottenham matches were still fresh in the memory, and Lancaster were the smallest of small Unibond clubs beating us at home. (That reminds me, the Cheshire cup defeat at Vauxhall GM was pretty dire too, I seem to remember Jo was fuming at the end. Ecky used to joke that they would take four supporters to an away game all the way from Wooton, all coming in the same car).
Best wins are between Macc in the snow (3-2, Pritchard) and the recent 1-0 (Lawrie).

Stalybridge Celtic and that Danny McGoona miss.
-
I'd say the 3-4 reverse on the last day of the season to an already-relegated Eastbourne, to ensure we joined them, has to be up there.
-
All things considered, Altrincham 0-3 Stafford Rangers in 2017 might be mine. Optimism was crushed in the opening day sunshine. Following those two seasons, there was always going to be an underlying tension but the way it resurfaced almost immediately after going a goal down was really horrible. Top that with the tedious Stafford fans in the bar at full-time for good measure.
Honourable mentions for the 2-1 defeat at Trafford in the FA Cup 2QR in 2013, the 3-0 defeat at Macclesfield in 2015 and the 5-0 defeat at Eastbourne in 2010, and of course the 6-0 defeat at home to AFC Fylde.
-

0-5 at Rotherham in the FA Cup in 1976.
A totally miserable day. They only had one record to play before the game, at half time and at the end of the game and it was 'Beautiful Noise' by Neil Diamond and I still have flashbacks if I am unlucky enough to hear it anywhere.
Alty produced window stickers for people who were driving there to put in their rear window
'Rotherham won't bother'em'
It was a different story when we went there in 1979.

Reeves miss away AT FGR leading to a 1-0 defeat.
Losing away to Halifax after Watmore missed an open next on BT Sport in 2015.
5-0 away to Boston, 7-0 to Crawley, 5-0 to Eastbourne.
Relegated final day at home TO Eastbourne
The massacre against Fylde x 2
The abysmal showing against FC United at Xmas at Home.

Only 3 are a Parky defeats, so we're definitely improving 😁

There’s far too many to mention tbh.
All sh*t, all similar, I guess the only thing that raises one above the other is circumstances. In which case a 2-3 defeat at Rushden in 1997 (we were already relegated) on the same last day when Macclesfield won the title (and promotion this time) away at nearby Kettering was the most tedious.
I only survived it because it was so f**king Alty that at one point you just had to laugh shake your head at it.
Of course, the actual answer to the question isn’t even a defeat. The worst result in our history, that will send a shudder through all Alty fans old enough, is the 3-3 draw away at Slough in 1991 that shut the door on our promotion dream.
I’ve never been so heartbroken after an Alty result before or since.
-
For sheer anti-climax, the 5-0 defeat at Kidderminster in the FA Trophy Quarter Final in 1995 takes some beating.
-
My disappointment only extends back as far as 2003...…...Eastbourne at home to be relegated...….....losing at FGR after being three-up...….any defeat by Droylsden......away at Halifax against ten men when they went up field and scored when I believe a win would have kept us up...…..Gateshead at home in FA cup this year (thanks to Trafford Council petty actions denying what could have been a good cup run)………...being robbed in the FA Cup to Millwall after Lane sent off for being smashed with the ball...….Penalties defeat in FA cup at home to Luton
-
Bath in Trophy was a glum affair.
-
There were quite a few in the 16/17 season. There was a 0-3 at Worcester (I think it was at Bromsgrove's ground). It was freezing cold - and for the second half I stood behind Jim Harvey who plainly had plainly lost the team. Worcester were awful but still 3 goals better than us and for me it was one of the few times that I have thought 'why am I even bothering with this?
-
For sheer anti-climax, the 5-0 defeat at Kidderminster in the FA Trophy Quarter Final in 1995 takes some beating.
Did Darren Heesom get sent off that day?

He got sent off on one visit there - pretty sure it was this one. A daft handball IIRC.
To round off a great day, me and JTH had bricks thrown at us as we were heading back to the car.

I recall the build up to their injury time corner while we were leading 3-2, the late great John Murray turned round to face away from the pitch and shook his head before it was taken - we all knew what was coming.
That was the only one of our six visits there that we didn't win too. Given our teams in the early/mid 90's (90/91 and 94/95 excepted), that's some going.

Colne dynamoes away - just seemed to crash our whole idea of how good we were 5-0

Stalybridge Celtic and that Danny McGoona miss.
That McGoona miss defied the laws of physics. The ball was practically on the goal line so he showed no end of skill to get it over the crossbar.
Worst for me was the 1-5 home defeat to Mossley in the FA Trophy in 1980. In my mind we were invisible at the time so to lose by that scoreline... To be fair, Mossley weren't a bad outfit either.
-
Surprised no one has mentioned the FA Trophy semi final defeat to Scarborough in the second replay at Doncaster in what? 1977? Didn't Mickey Moore miss a penalty? I remember being so upset as I followed on Piccadilly Radio Sports updates from the game that night..... :(
-
Great thread this . I concur with all of the above and in particular the South Liverpool debacle inspired by Albie Nieman and Eric Shreeve , and yes we were lucky it was only 0-6 ! Others that immidietely spring to mind include honourless ' upsets' by he likes of the mighty Sandbach Ramblers , Pwllheli & District , Winsford Utd amd Cammell Laird in various cups .

Yes, that Pwllheli one!
I've often wondered how they came to be in the FA trophy when they never played in an English league? Nantlle Vale, who I think they beat in the previous round, too. Freddie Pye managed NV in the sixties too before he came to us (not directly before) didn't he?
-
Bang on Sanghall . Thinking of Freddie Pye he was brilliant for us at Cheshire League level but just could'nt build a decent NPL side where he used the latter day Neil Young practice of making mega numbers of signings ( mostly older heads ) hoping it would work out . We know how the story ends !

The Fisher Athletic 0-0 as well when that Russian was there.

I always think it's a pity there's no video phone footage of that McGoona miss so I can see if it's as bad as I remember it. I did think he hit the bar rather than putting it over, but even so.

That reminds me, the FA cup defeat at "Gui-ser-ley" was pretty grim too. The only good point was a last chance to see Freeman. There was desperate talk on the way back about where on Earth we go from here, and I think it turned out to be Bernard Taylor's last match.
-

I should have included that one in my original post. It was an awful penalty.
The Trophy defeat at home to Cheltenham who had an outfield player in goal was another.
-
Mine was that 4-3 away to FGR after winning first half 0-3 that was a sorry drive home alone
-
Morecambe away 0-7 Jerome John had the shots covered "but couldn't reach".
Spurs, the second time. We was robbed & Shaun Constable would have been a legend.
-
Seen a few absolute stinkers v Slough (including I think a 7-3 home loss).
But for sheer depression, our defeat at Chorley in the relegation to Evostik season just about takes the biscuit. Fans heckling our own players, no players warming up before the match and subs who clearly did not want to come on. Absolute nightmare.

There used to be a reciprocal arrangement where a number of clubs (sixteen, maybe, though I might not have that number right) from Wales and England were able to compete in each others' cups, even though they played in domestic Welsh or English football. Wales didn't have an FA Trophy equivalent so a few clubs from the Welsh League (North) were allowed to take part in that, rather than the FA Amateur Cup or Vase. The clubs weren't always near the border either. Besides the likes of Pwllheli and District and Nantlle Vale on one side, I can remember Stourbridge and Kidderminster Harriers in the Welsh Cup.
These defeats bring back some traumatic memories. Considering the way the match went and the outcome from the result, I think Eastbourne Borough was the worst. I can still see the ball going between Craig Dootson's legs.
-
Hereford United were the last English club to actually win the Welsh Cup (1990). Winners prior to that included Kidderminster, Shrewsbury, and Stourbridge, Chester, and South Liverpool. I dimly recall Northwich playing in the competition at some stage.
-
Considering I only get to a handful of games a season I’ve been to an alarming number of these! Eastbourne (long drive back to Bath after that one) Worcester away (at bromsgrove), FGR reversal, getting robbed by Milwall and the second spurs although I’m not sure that was so bad.
I could add any number of national league away games in early 2000’s where we turned up knowing we’d defend for 90 minutes and try (and fail) to snatch something. Places like Crawley and Stevenage. I was also at Salisbury when we threw away a 3-0 lead. Solihull this season was pretty bad, I think that’s the earliest I’ve been 100% certain of the result in a match - when we were 1 down with 10 men. Personally though as an 18 year old living in Wycombe at the time (1991) the trophy semi final defeat after outplaying them completely was hard to take - my response at school on Monday that I wasn’t that bothered if they won the trophy because we were going to win the league did not age well

That was the first Alty defeat that I witnessed. Also Alex Stepney's final game.

Have you seen us win 😂
-
Great awaydays down south are limited. I remember beating St Albans 5-0 but the more I think about it the more horrors come back. Getting relegated at Weymouth, playoff defeat at Brakley, Enfield at Wembley (when I lived in Yorkshire!) Colchester in the cup
I have seen us win on penalties twice, Nuneaton and Blythe. And I was at all the playoff games in the guisely season, saw us beat Barnsley, and Runcorn at Wembley so not all bad!
-
My memory might be iffy (age...senility) but late 90s or early 00s we lost at home to Mossley in the FA Cup with an abysmally insipid performance - the only time I ever left Moss Lane before the final whistle

Your memory is very good, although it might be kinder if it had let you forget this. We lost 0-3 at home to Mossley in the 2nd Round Qualifying in 2000. We signed Danny Murphy from Mossley as a result of this, even before they played in the next round, if my own memory is right.

Yes, of course - getting Danny Murphy: not a bad player, but not a very decent left foot - trying to cross from the left with the outside of his left foot v Darlo in the cup!
-
Personally the 7-0 at Crawley in the depths of winter. I wasn't in the
best of spirits waiting at Crawley station in the dark. Later in a pub
near Euston I had a very drunk Preston North End supporter very
down about them losing 3-1 at Loftus Road, almost a victory by our
standards that day.
-
I forgot to mention that shocking ass whooping by fylde 0-6 was the only game i have ever walked out at half time and didnt return till the next season.....

Usually if you walk out you'll miss a goal. In your case it was the sixth. I survived a few more games before I too quit for the duration.
-
In terms of what we missed out on the Colchester late show was a triple sickener - probable televised replay , televised next round home to Charlton then a third crack at Spurs , only this time at the mecca. We'd have had the fanzone 5 years ago .
Couldha , Wouldha , Shouldha .

For sheer anti-climax, the 5-0 defeat at Kidderminster in the FA Trophy Quarter Final in 1995 takes some beating.
Yes, that’s a good shout. Utterly woeful that day and outclassed by a superior Kiddy team.
-
Boston away in that FA Trophy semi final. Jeff Johnson scores a screamer to equalise late on only for Trevor Dance to shovel a corner into the net a minute later.
Followed by a nightmare journey home on the train.
-
So many over the years but to narrow it down to my ‘top’ 3.
1. Alty 0-2 Northwich Vics in April ‘91. This was the fag end of the legendary 90/91 season and the game that confirmed our title dreams were over-and against them lot of all people. The 9 year old me distinctly recalls a Northwich fan shouting on his way out ‘No more Stockports, no more Burys, that’s you done Altrincham’. I like to think 30 years later we’ve had the last laugh with the approx 500 clubs in Northwich playing many levels below us.
2. Alty 0-0 Kiddy last game of 99-00. Ok whilst it wasn’t a defeat but the draw that got us relegated with the large Kiddy support ballooning about having won the title and promotion to the EFL already. Hearing those lot chant ‘We’ll never play you again’ as we sunk to an eminently avoidable relegation was really depressing.
3. Portsmouth 2-1 Alty in the FA Cup in 2019. Not the performance which was great, likewise the day out but for sheer crushing disappointment when a money spinning live TV replay was in our grasp this is the worst defeat of the PP era I’ve been to. It wasn’t until the Mon night and at the pub for the London Alty Christmas curry that we found out Pompey had drawn Fleetwood away that we all felt much better.
