I like this sort of stuff; thanks for starting the thread.

I'll add that lad Jon Nolan, who has been released by Lincoln after an unsuccessful loan spell at Wrexham.

The fact that James Poole, a decent conference player is plying his trade at Salford after his move back north from Dover shows they've the clout to do what they have said they will do at Salford. I see Sunderland ship youngsters out to Boston on a regular basis. Surely some bag of sh*t like Bolton have young players they want off the wage bill at the moment that would be more than competent at conference level.

Also, Woking must be pig sick about that - I suspect his capture might see Cheltenham to the title now.

James is part of my extended family and I passed his details onto the management team at the last home game last season as he was keen to sign. He was contacted but had a slight injury so we then, and I quote, "we're keeping an eye on him"! He's now scoring for fun. As Dover had offered him a contract I couldn't understand why we didn't sign him immediately.

As someone mentioned elsewhere, Rochdale's latest bright prospect James Hooper is a Wythenshawe lad and has looked great on his limited first team appearances. Was wanted by Norwich in the summer, tenacious, good shot on him and can play anywhere across the forward line. I do hope we're making enquiries about these sorts of players.

You can't just sign anyone, it's got to be the right player, you know, like George Bowerman. Or Steven Gillespie, or Griffith.

I'm going to cut Bowerman some slack here. He's not really my cup of tea (bit of a headless chicken) but it's a bit unfair to put him in the same bracket as Gillespie and Griffith. But he does give it a bit of a go and has scored a couple of goals (as many as our star signing Twiss did for us in his one season in the conference with us), including a lovely cameo at Gateshead.

And had Nicky Clee been fit rather than flogged half to death and actually scored at Colchester we'd have been waxing lyrical about his turn and raking through ball for years...

Its actually hilarious how good a 50% fit Nicky Clee was, at 100% we'd arguably have one of the top five wingers in the league.

You make a good point about Bowerman, most of the game time he's been given has been out wide. He definitely has that sort of headless chicken nature and as such he's gone missing out wide, but I wonder what we'd see from him during a run of games through the middle.

I agree, I think Bowerman is similar to Lawrie in that regard and could contribute much further through the middle. The problem for both of them is that I'd rather play 4-5-1 (with 3 proper CMs and 2 wingers) than 4-4-1-1. So basically neither should be on the pitch if we had a fully fit winger for each side - which we don't, and also both seem to prefer the left hand side. Heaven forbid we ever find a right winger too.

I'd argue Moult has taken on the job that Griffith was signed to do. With Richman, O'Keefe and Sinnott... and Lawrie in a more advanced position, you could say we're actually alright in the middle.

We certainly need a right back though.

I'd agree about signing a right-back, but as I said earlier, I think it more likely that we'll sign a left sided centre half because Scott Leather can play right back if Sinnott gets injured.

The point I was making is that LD decreed his squad at the start of the season required 4 CM (moult, Richman, O'Keefe and Griffith), as it did last season with Cav and Williams in place of the latter two. If Sinnott was the 4.5 midfielder he has become even less so due to covering for Densmore.

I understand that we wanted 4 cm, but the Griffith affair was what it was so we went with 3, but if any funds came in surly that was the priority followed by replacing the 2 long term injured dens and Clee (Deasy has covered Coburn and if GH & SL are the first choice cb pairing then SH can at least cover).

Perhaps that lad Jon Nolan can be looked at on non-contract terms to cover the CM gap in that case? I can't imagine he'll have better offers, and they had high hopes for him at Lincoln.

Not a signing but potential implications for us.

Birmingham City sign 18 year old Luke Maxwell from Kidderminster for £75,000.

Well, if he plays on Saturday, let's hope that he gets himself sent off for fighting with one of his own team mates, as he did when he played against us for Torquay United at the J Davidson Stadium back in October.

I'm afraid the phrase "something to prove" comes to mind.

Another way of looking at it is one of the sides below us in the league have had to sell a player that they didn't want to and has scored 7/31 league goals this season. Swings and roundabouts even if he is fired up on Saturday.

Richard Brodie, free agent, released by aldershot wants to return northern, now I know what people are going to say, but they said that about KP who's become a bit of a cult legend, worth a punt in my opinion

I'm with you on this, Figgy P.  He could be hateful for us but in a good way.  On the subject of KP, really pleased to see him ripping apart Telford earlier in the week.  Bowerman had one disallowed in the game.

I'd take Brodie to Alty any day of the week. Works his socks off and his attitude on the pitch is extremely effective, like it or not.

So who would he replace? Ranks? Reeves? Margetts? He's only scored 5 goals all season and is a grade A T**t. Avoid

Margetts is here briefly so he would give us options, however I imagine he wants paying well.  He could most likely end up at Southport or Tranmere I'm guessing but If that was to lead to Margetts staying here then I'm for that.

I never thought id say this but ... I have to agree that Mr Brodie wouldn't be a bad pick in our current position.
My God did I just write that  ;)

Judging by the Woking game, I don't think we should look further than Jon Margetts rather than Brodie or anyone else for that matter.
Are all the 4 loan players all full time that may not want to turn to the part time game?

All the loanees are full time footballers. Ginnelly and Henry are both with us from league clubs to gain 1st team experience so it's highly unlikely they'll ever be more than loan players. Margetts and Holness on the other hand while being full time are struggling to get into an average Tranmere side at our level and may consider turning part time if their loan moves work out.

Ginnellys valued at £6 million, it would be very nice if he did decide to stay, not sure Burnley would be too pleased  ;D

Arguments for Brodie - proven goalscorer, upsets opposition
Arguments against Brodie - would in all probability demand a higher wage than we could afford or would wish to pay, wouldn't necessarily fit in with our current formation, we have plenty of forward players at the moment particularly as the manager says Reeves is fit but just not getting selected at present
Personal prejudice - I would rather we didn't employ a cheat (but I know we have done in the past - no names, no pack drill)
Leaving that aside I still think the cons outweigh the pros.

When I see him play, he reminds me of Tom Daly!!!!!

Hadn't seen that before I pressed post Saughall.  :D

Slightly off topic, but it's nice to see you post again. One of the forum posters whose opinion I always respected. Shame that people like yourself get put off from posting because unsavoury types are aggressive and argumentative for no reason and try and make you feel bad over what is effectively a hobby.

Anyway, back to the topic...

Many thanks for the kind comments GHM. However, I've not been posting for ill health reasons (and the fact that the computer is now in the draughty hallway!) but I've still been getting my Altyfans fix on my mobile in front of the fire!  ;)
As far as the contentious posters who seem to now be about, my response in the main has always been to let them get on with it and not to get 'sucked in'.
There do seem to be one or two cranks but, hey ho, they still follow Alty so they can't all be that bad can they?
One thing that has disappointed me though are the doom and gloom merchants who only seem to post when things are not so good; or when they've found an occasion the pointlessly criticise. We don't really need that do we? I've always tried to be positive or say nothing - some others on here could probably consider doing something similar.
Anyway six points from Welling and Wrexham and things will look considerably brighter.
