Nantwich Town v Alty: Cheshire Senior Cup 1976
« on: March 30, 2008, 09:49:54 PM »

Does anyone else remember watching Alty lose 2-1 against Nantwich Town in the Cheshire Senior Cup back in February 1976?

I have very distant memories of that afternoon but am pretty certain that our underperforming manager, Les Rigby, handed in his resignation not long after that defeat.

Did the legendary Dave Furnival appear for Alty on that dark day?!

Father Flynn, are you out there?

No but I remember us winning in 1992 with a strike from Clive Freeman.

I do have some enduring images of Dave Furnival playing at Nantwich & if memory serves he was particularly appalling that day.Nantwich dererved to win but we were awful.I think that Les Wain may have scored our goal(????).I have no memory linking this particular match with Les Rigby's inevitable demise but you may well be right in that I think this game was in the Quarter Final & took place in February.Tony Sanders arrived towards the end of March & Tommy Spratt was in charge for a few games in the intervening weeks.

I don't recall ever seeing Nantwich play at Moss Lane in my time but I have been to Nantwich's old ground (Jackson Avenue??) on five occasions.

1973....possibly October 6th..... we won 3-0 in the FA Cup....This is the only game I remember going to with Alty where the official supporters' coach was a double decker bus!

1974......we won 5-0 in the FA Trophy.

1976.......2-1 to the Dabbers as mentioned above.

1992.......1-0 to Alty in the CSC...as Ballers says the goal was scored by Clive Freeman about 10 minutes from the end & we were a tad fortunate to win.

Around 2003/4 I saw Clitheroe win there 3-2 to clinch the North West Counties League title.

Mister Flynn,

Nantwich visited Moss Lane for an FA Cup Third Qualfying Round tie back in October 1971.

It finished 1-1 and Alty won the replay (played at Gresty Road, Crewe) 4-1.

In those dismal days of Stan Allan's managerial reign at Moss Lane, we actually won 2-1 at Nantwich in the Cheshire Senior Cup (26th November 1991).

Go on then, who scored on that night?

I wasn't at the Nantwich game in 76 - but if my memory serves me correctly, Sanders was not appointed until September / October 76, signing Jeff Johnson and Tony Webber almost immediately, both making their debuts (and scoring) in a 4-1 home win over Gainsborough Trinity after about 10 games of the 76-77 season.

By the way, one game I have absolutely no recollection of AT ALL is the 2-1 defeat to Witton at Canal Street on a Saturday in the semi final of the CSC in 79-80, the week after beating Weymouth 3-2 to go clear at the top of the APL.  I remember the 1st round draw at Macc between the two Orient games, the replay win and the defeat of Runcorn at Mss Lane in the second round.  can anyone enlighten me?

Mister Guru,

Tony Sanders was appointed as Alty manager at the start of April 1976.

His first match in charge was a 3-0 win at Goole Town on 3rd April 1976.

Jeff Johnson and Tony Webber both made their Alty debuts in a 4-1 NPL home win against Gainsborough Trinity on 4th December 1976 (and both of them scored in that game).

8th March 1980
Cheshire Senior Cup Semi-Final (at Canal Street, Runcorn)
Witton Albion 2  Altrincham 1

This was the occasion when Alty wanted to fulfil their scheduled Alliance Premier League fixture at Maidstone United and send a reserve team to play against Witton on the same afternoon.

The Cheshire FA intervened and we were instructed to postpone the APL game and field our first team against Witton.

Only John Connaughton distinguished himself as the Robins put on an apathetic performance which proved that they really didn't want to be there.

John Rogers scored Alty's goal and the attendance was 1,024.

Alty team: Connaughton; Allan; Davison; Tobin; Owens; King; Barrow; Heathcote; Brooke; Rogers; Howard. Sub. Wilson.

There, now you can sleep easy tonight....!

My goodness - how time can play tricks -  I do remember that Gainsborough match as being the dawn of the great era, particularly with Jeff arriving.  I'd obviously conflated Sanders - Jeff arriving - new era into one wonderful event...

And I still have no memory of the Witton game - none at all!

Furnival played and scored as I distinctly remember him working in a V sign to our supporters in his goal celebrations. Didn't Paul Clements also score in that Gainsborough game -  a player smaller than Chris Senior!

My word this is bringing back misty eyed memories, the biggest jolt to me is recalling that debut game of Jeff Johnson and Tony Webber and thinking to myself as a 14 yr old that something good and very big was starting to happen..................and by hell was it!!

JTH,

I've just dug out the Altrincham Guardian report of that Cheshire Senior Cup tie at Nantwich back on 7th February 1976 and you are quite correct.....the legendary Dave Furnival did indeed score Alty's goal that afternoon.

Nantwich's ace striker, John Walker (who later went on to play for Witton), scored twice before Furnival pulled a goal back in the 84th minute, which is described as follows:

"Cutler, the Nantwich goalkeeper, was troubled only three times, twice from sliced clearances from his defenders and once from a swinging centre from Les Wain. He had no chance with FURNIVAL's thunderbolt of a goal six minutes from time."

Alty team: John Wood; Stan Allan; Ivan Crossley; Les Wain; Roy Hughes; John Owens; Paul Clements; Micky Moore; Dave Furnival; Lennie Dickinson; Mickey Brooke. Sub. Tony Bannister.

I still can't quite believe that I had forgotten that I had actually seen the lumbering ox Furnival score a goal for the Robins!

Oh, and you are spot on again re. that Gainsborough match from 1976.
The scorers that day were Johnson, Webber and Clements (2).

Anyone else recall that game when Clements played with a bandage/makeshift turban on his head for most of the 90 minutes?

This VAT return is not getting done in a hurry.

I'll take a guess and say it was a 3-1 win vs Runcorn at home in 75-76, our goals from Clements (a header!!!) &  Mickey Moore (2), Trevor Finnegan replying for them - no Alty Guardian report just a worring ability to recall goals at a non league game 30 bloody years ago. They went on to win the NPL I think, not surprising with Finnegan, Whitbread and Howard as a forward line.

Correct fixture....but one incorrect scorer.

8th November 1975
NPL

Altrincham 3 (Casey, Clements, Moore)

Runcorn 1 (Finnigan)

Attendance: 1,741.
