Crap day, but too early to panic!

Agrees , hopefully wont be panicking after 10 games played when the table takes shape

The table is taking shape NOW. And we are at the wrong end of it. I have seen little so far to convince me that we haven't gone backwards since last season.

Boston were mediocre at best, yet were able to pick us off at will. I suppose all the "Thompson must go" brigade will already be sharpening their knives, but, while I thought he might have cut out the cross for the second goal, the problems really emanated from the players in front of him.

Both full backs had poor games, and we were too wide at the back, so that Jones and Mullarkey were left too exposed. That wasn't helped by midfield. Williams worked hard to little real effect, but Harrop and Branson were utterly woeful. Richman gave us more energy when he came on, but the game had gone once they got the third. That came after our only decent spell - about 10 minutes - and we were increasingly ragged after that.

It was great to see Moult come on, but I'm not sure he's quite ready to play his usual leading role, and one of their goals came as a result of him losing possession.

Hemmings doesn't look as good as last year, and when Walters came on to replace JJ (well below par) he couldn't produce anything really threatening.

Hulme had a thoroughly frustrating afternoon. Not much service in Hancock's absence, and frequently manhandled by their centre back without the referee taking any action.

Just a bad day at the office, or something more worrying ? Play like we played today in future games, and we'll be back in the Evostik this time next year - I doubt anyone who was there today could disagree.

Altrincham FC First Team / Boston United : match thread
« on: August 25, 2019, 11:15:25 AM »
We're going to be well below strength. Drench and Hannigan definitely out, Hancock wasn't fit for yesterday, Harrop limped off, Richman was limping at the end. Densmore appeared to have a problem during the half time kick about, and I believe the much-missed Moult is still some way off returning. We could be down to the bare bones.

On the plus side, Boston have two suspended, and look to be out of sorts if yesterday's 3-0 drubbing at Gloucester City is any indication.

I'm on the coach, but I'm not making any predictions.

I expected mid-table consolidation last season, and a play-off challenge this season, not the other way round.

Would have been nice to consider Everyman as a screen opportunity for the premiere and get our name out there
Still worth approaching them I would have thought.

People are being very charitable. He wasn't good enough.

It's not that he isn't good enough - his past record leaves no doubt of that - but more that our style of play wasn't compatible with his. He wasn't the orthodox wide man that we wanted. Wherever he ends up, I wish him well, especially when his leaving quote shows dignity and honour.

Williams for Mullarkey and that looks about right. I'd definitely start Richman ahead of the unconvincing Branson, and Harrop gave us extra energy on Saturday - he could become our super-sub. I can't emphasise too strongly how much we're missing Jake Moult though.

I won't try and polish the turd that was our performance today. We were extremely poor. Williams ran his socks off, Drench made a couple of decent saves, Hemmings started brightly and faded. The introduction of Harrop improved things marginally.

Branson was shocking and barely contributed anything of value. Hulme held the ball up nicely at times, but the flair of last season is still absent. JJ made too many poor decisions in possession - he's got to vary his penalty technique, they knew exactly where it was going.

Hannigan was lucky not to get a second yellow half an hour in - the ref wasn't bad, but his assistant on the side opposite the stand misdirected him twice.

Brackley didn't punish our slackness - York would have scored 5 or 6 today.

Send Arnold out on loan somewhere local to him and get him fit
Certainly an option, but he might not buy it.

Look at the photo of Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver when he says the above statement; he is a dead ringer for Connor Hampson!
Bet De Niro couldn't bury it from outside the box like Connor though  :D

I hope that Sol Campbell finds a post with a decent club soon. I was sceptical when he was appointed, but he's done a really good job in difficult circumstances, and he deserves a chance elsewhere.

Macclesfield, on the other hand, deserve to disappear down a large bottomless pit. I normally sympathize with supporters whose clubs go under, but there is an exception to any rule - and Macclesfield are it.

Given the new rules we were lucky not to concede a handball penalty
However, along the same lines, if James Jones hadn't scored we should have had a penalty because he was being pulled back.

Set up Crewe's second goal at Middlesbrough last night. Played the full 90 minutes. Billy Sass-Davies came on as a 76th minute substitute.
