I'm not bright but thought it 'used' to be 100 years ago but is not anymore ... as its defined as
"United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland "

Thats what I thought.

So if I put UK delivery only on something, and you're in Dublin when you order that kind of rules you out.

Ecky-I feel that we need to refer to the Eurovision Song Contest here. The United Kingdom(Cliff Richard,Bucks Fizz etc) & The Republic of Ireland (Dana,Johnny Logan, etc)are separate entities. ::)

Bonsoir Royaume-Uni ;)

Or we can look at Wikipedia:-

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (commonly known as the United Kingdom, the UK, or Britain)[7] is a country[8][9] to the northwest of mainland Europe. It comprises the island of Great Britain, the northeast part of the island of Ireland and many small islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK with a land border, sharing it with the Republic of Ireland.[10][11][12] Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel and the Irish Sea. The largest island, Great Britain, is linked to France by the Channel Tunnel.

Can not believe this thread. Dublin is NOT and has NEVER been part of the UK. The confusion usually arises because the group of islands that we belong to (and I live in the Irish Republic) have traditionally been known as the British Isles. Dublin was for a long time under English rule which can be traced back to that **nt Cromwell.......enough already before I come out in sympathy with my car and blow a gasket.

OK, technically speaking yes, but not the UK as we now know it. There was an act of union in around 1800 that joined the Kingdom of Ireland to the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Not since 1921 has Ireland (minus the six counties of the Northern Ireland....note, not Ulster as many think, that particular province comprises the six counties of the North and three in the republic) been part of any union.

Sorry to be a history bore, but in 1110 the Earl of Pembroke (known as Strongbow) invaded Ireland and eventually made his capital Dublin, He tried to declare himself King but Henry II recalled him to England and took over the occupied lands himself. It wasn't a complete conquest and there was also an Irish High King who ruled outside The Pale. The Normans who were part of that conquest had names which  are now recognised as Irish names, for instance Butler and Doyle.
I thank you.

Incidentally - the reason England, Scotland and Wales is called Great Britain is because it's the largest (ie 'greatest') of the British isles, which includes the island of Ireland, the Isle of Man, Shetland Isles, etc. So now when some idiot sarcastically asks what's so great about Great Britain - you can tell them :)
