Title: Geoff Goodwin Resigns (GW : POST YOUR THANKS TO GEOFF HERE)
Post by: ArmchairAlty on September 13, 2010, 01:24:05 PM
From the main site...

Altrincham FC have today released the following statement:
"It is with deep regret that we have to announce that Geoff Goodwin (right) has stepped down as Chairman from the Football Club as well as from the Board of Directors due to mounting pressures at work and his involvement with his son's karting. We would like to offer our sincere thanks for everything that Geoff, and his wife Suzanne, have done for this Football Club over the last 8 years of his leadership. Geoff has agreed to continue his Sponsorship of the Football Club until at least the end of the current season. Mr Grahame Rowley will act as Chairman until the next Board meeting, scheduled for Wednesday 22nd September when the position will be discussed".

GG was & remains a great ambassador for the club and a voice of great common sense in football - I hope he is made a life president or other such honour.

I wish Geoff and his family all the very best and hope we shall still see him at ML.

Good luck and thanks Geoff.

Geoff has done wonders for this club, and has often received unwarranted criticism. The man isn't even really first and foremost a football fan !

I honestly believe that without his timely intervention, the club we all love could have gone under. I'm only sorry that he leaves with us at such a low ebb. Good luck to you and yours for whatever the future brings - and don't be a stranger !

This is really bad news. Geoff has been the best thing to happen to this club in many years. Graham Rowley will do an excellent job.

Thanks Geoff for your wonderful leadership, financial support from your company, common sense, and dedication, you will be sorely missed and always welcome at Alty.  All the very best to you and your family for the future. :(

If all charimen in football were of the same stuff that GG is made of then the game, particularly non-league, wouldnt be in the mess its in.

This has been coming for some time, and I think the ongoing commitment from GG shows that the man truly cares about the club and its fans.

Thankyou Geoff Goodwin and family. I hope you have a very happy and succesful future!!!

Geoff has been amazing with us. With very little knowledge of football finances, he, and the board, have managed to steady the ship, and bring us BSP football for 6 years.
Geoff Goodwin should be congratulated for all his efforts.

I hope we now make the correct appointment, in order to take the club FORWARD.

Many thanks to Geoff. A calming, stabilising presence in the boardroom and a big reason why we've done so well over the last few years. Best of luck to you in the future. Here's hoping your lad ends up a multimillionaire F1 driver - I'm sure he wouldn't forget about Alty FC, would he?  ;)

Maybe some of our big shareholders like Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie might take more of an interest now?  :D

Once when I got over excited and screamed for my money back at v Dagenham and Redbridge, GG had a word in my ear. His words were as follows:- 'Graham Heathcote is doing his best. If he goes then I go.' From where I sit I hope this is not a self fulfilling prophecy.

I support all of the positive comments re GG. Good luck to him.

I do find it suprising that the board will now wait over a week to convene and discuss next steps. Surely an Extraordinary board meeting is called for? like........ tonight/tomorrow..... Surely everything should now be discussed? If there is nobody to replace GG, the GR steps in and the debarcle that has been going on for the last 2 - 3 weeks gets sorted out i.e. does the manager stay/go? A firm statement to the fans indicating what the club is/isn't doing. ???

To be honest, this is no real surprise at all, GG was going a year or so ago for the same reasons, and I know the board have been looking for some time now for new blood, and money. GR is a very capable man and rushing into EGM's is a total over-reaction. In terms of how the club runs this doesnt change much day to day.

I for one am just pleased that GG extended his stay with us and continued his great work. The club is still debt free, still well run and others will come in and follow Geoff's great work I'm sure,....all we need is 3 points at Eastbourne ;D

I think the announcement of Geoff leaving is less of a shock than maybe people think. With him saying he was thinking of leaving last year I am sure the board would have had a contingency plan in place if this was to happen, hence why Grahame has swiftly becoming acting chair and there is not a blind panic.

Geoff Goodwin saved this club from financial oblivion (with the help of the rest of the board).   His hardline approach to not spending what we didnt have was unheard of at Altrincham or in football in general.  I don't think there was a massive queue to take over at the time.  He allowed us to still have a club to be moaning about today.  He was always a reluctant chairman but stuck it out for 8 years.

Anyone who has posted in this thread and not had the courtesy to say thank you should be ashamed in my opninion.

Thank you for all you have done and all the best for the future.

Thanks to Geoff for all the hard work and realism. Thanks also for maintaining sponsorship until at least the end of the season.

It's well known that Geoff's first love has always been motorsport and it's no secret that Geoff has been spending a lot of time recently working with his son on the karting front. Come to think of it, running a business in a recession when public funding is being squeezed must also be causing some concern. Hope it all works out on both fronts.

Geoff Goodwin saved this club.  Geoff Goodwin is a true hero to Alty FC.

Sums it up nicely.  The way this club is run makes us proud to be supporters.  Whatever the results are, whatever arguments we have over team selection the one thing we fans have always agreed on is that our club is run properly.  The number of posts on here looking down on other clubs in trouble / going bust is only possible because we had Geoff running our club and had confidence it wouldn't happen to us (again).  We are some of the most patient fans around because we have been educated on the basics of spend what you have.  We owe you a huge amount, I think more than anyone else I am proud to be an Alty fan because of the attitude you have created around the club.

Thank you

A chairman of Geoff Goodwins calibre is a very hard thing to find.  I am sure we all appreciate how lucky we were to have Geoff and his family support Alty.

I am not so sure that non-league football yet realises the contribution Geoff has indirectly made to the wider game.  He, and the board, have set THE standard in how to run a club.  Because of Geoff Goodwin Altrincham FC has set the benchmark.  It is well past time that other clubs recognised this and adopted the same practices.

Be in no doubt the Goodwin name will be written about in glowing terms in the the history of our club.

Many thanks Geoff, many many thanks.

Geoff, your decision not to pursue the club for the money it owed you but to get involved in running it not only saved it but enabled it to regain its self respect. I've followed the club for 40 years now and personally feel your influence on its culture eclipses even the White and Swales era on which I was brought up. We are now a financial secure, well supported community club playing at the highest level (in real terms) it ever has. I know we can continue what you've started here. Thanks and all the very best for the future.

It is unlikely that anyone will surpass what Noel White & Peter Swales did for our club in the 1960's, but Geoff's contribution has been immense. In a way, the fact that he wasn't involved in all the nitty gritty stuff, was a very positive thing, as it allowed him to focus on the more important stuff. To clear £650,000 of debt & progress the club from The UniBond League, via Conference North to six seasons in Conference National is quite incredible.

Fantastic stuff Geoff....you are leaving at a difficult moment, but you are leaving the club in very good shape!

Your contribution to this club has been immense, most importantly you brought common sense, good down to earh values and reality into the club (doesnt come naturally to most football fans or indeed Directors) and together with your excellent board completely turned around the fortunes of a club,.... that I really feared for before you took over (and I was involved myself so know the situation).

You will be greatly missed, but should feel very proud of what you achieved, may I wish you and your family the best wishes for the future and we hope to see you at Alty games in years to come. ;D

Thank you Geoff for all you have done for my football club.

It is difficult to sum up Geoff's contribution.....but I think he has absolutly led this club, held it together when implosion would have been easier and given everyone connected to it a genuine pride in Altrincham FC and the way it goes about it's business.....with his bullish but likeable determination he has driven this club and commanded the respect required for everyone to follow his lead.

He has been a great leader and given us all some great entertainment while taking us from massively in debt staring non league oblivion in the face to where we are today.

Not bad for someone not interested in football....I hope he has enjoyed the ride as much as we fans have.

While I am sad that this era has come to an end, I admire those who go out while they are still on top because it means they will always be remembered for the right things.....I think we have a new Alty legend

Oh Wayne Bradley....we're not a big club anymore....

I don't think anything would surprise me any more... either way, let's hope it's a pleasant surprise (Russian billionaire etc.)

I must admit, with Geoff's sense of decency, I can't see him not having something lined up.

is it too much coincidence to link this with the Nash's cash injection of late?

Without speaking for him and to nip this in the bud, Geoff has nothing lined up other than a plan to keep in touch and do all he can to help the club within the time constraints that he has.

I've just spoken to Geoff in Sale and the guy in genuinely moved by the response to his resignation.

I'll keep the rest of the conversation confidential, suffice to say that I anticipate developments the outfall from which, if it comes to light, may surprise some people who post on here

ATS is the new chairman and pumps £500 k  into the club  ;)

Pleasant surprise? I'd cry if we were taken over by a foreign billionaire looking for a plaything.

I hope it isn't that bloke from Croydon? He has a lot of used £50 notes to get rid of apparently.

I think that it is fair to say that Geoff and I did not always see eye to eye on everything and over the years we've had vastly different opinions.

However, I am genuinely sad that he's left at this point in a season and would like to thank him for all he has done over the years together with the other members of the AFC Board.

A couple of months ago I saw him in Altrincham.  at first he didn't recognise me, as most people who have know me for a great many years haven't recognised me post my treatment.  However, he clearly had a think and realised who I was and crossed over a very busy street to come and see me, gave me a hug and wished me a very speedy recovery.

Thank you Geoff

TA

P.S.  Bumped into GH a couple of weeks ago who also genuinely wished me well.  Not telling where I saw him though  :o

Geoff

Thanks for everything you have done for my football club since 02. I wish you and all your family all the very best in whatever you do, and pray that one day Jay really gets the chance to win the GB F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone or wherever it will be during his era.

Good luck and from the bottom of my heart, thanks for everything you have done for us and our club.
