Most influential player.
« on: January 26, 2008, 10:03:51 PM »

Who is the player who had the most influence  on the club in the last 40 years.

My personal choice has to be John King (as its my thread I can have 2 choices) Graham Heathcote.

Hmmm, ambiguous question this. I suspect when you say King and Heathcote you aren't really talking about them just as players.

If you are talking about playing only then it could be argued Paul SHowler. Never has one mans impact raised a team to such great heights and his departure a team to such great depths.

Got to agree that Kingy comes out on top. 2 Championship titles, FATrophy, League Cup and round 3 of the FA Cup on 4 successive seasons all in the space of 5 years while he was team leader. Jackie Swindells goal record will never be broken and Derek Halliwell wa a great captain.

Kingy was a colossus. His mere presence put us on the front foot in any match. Opponents were already wound up before he made one shout. His hardness gave protection to GH to carve out masterpieces in midfield. Personally I though Graham Barrow was a better all round player, buy Kingy's influence was priceless. Alty's achievements under his Captaincy where second to none. "  2 APL Championships, APL League Cup, FA Trophy and 4 FA Cup 3rd round appearances all in the space of 5 years. Even when he wasnt playing he was influential. I remember one game when he was sat in the stand next to Noel White (probably suspended) and the dugout of a Southern Club, I think Gravesend, physically attacked our left back John Cavanagh after a touchline tackle. Well Kingy flew from the stand hardly touched the barrier nad flattended the trainer flat out.
It was the second best blow that I have ever seen trown at an Alty related match.

An almighty righthand slap thrown by a stunningly beautifull blond bird, in a Pub in Market Harborough, after we won the APL Cup at Kettering in 1981.
She nearly took the Gazelle's head off !!!!!

My God what a question. Kingy certainly in there with his presence as Redhill Alty states, but who else? Jeff Johnson, could play everwhere and change a game, Colin Little recently even if a touch more in previous seasons, Johnny Worth, no can't choose one.

How about an all time 4-4-2 or 4-2-4 team, older fans may have more options.

                                              Coburn

Densmore            Cuddy                        Casey                   Allen

                      King                             Johnson

Howard                    Little                  Rogers                        Showler

Subs   Heathcote, Wealands, Barrow, Swindells, Rowlands

One awesome team.

I would only propose Peter Eales, and John Davison.

On the bench John Owens and mal bailey.

i had blanked that night from my mind (the game not the pub - i wasnt there)
i know its been said before but it was nasty sometimes in those days

anyone remember kingy getting in a fight in front of the poular side and falling to the floor grappling. john rogers sprinted from the other side of the pitch to boot the poor opponent in the head (but didnt get sent off)

brilliant memory redhill but it lets you down slightly it was Desborough.
My chatting up technique in a last two minutes of Chequers type way was not appreciated on that occassion and my ears are still ringing what a night it was though that pub has probably not sold as much beer on a tuesday night since.

i also remember phil hall being headbutted that night by a kettering skinhead said skinhead just bounced of and fell backwards cracking  his head open on a pillar in the stand. also got a bit bad tempered on the pitch which was probably why celebrations were held in desborough 15 miles from kettering
