Not sure which of the multiple reincarnations this one might be / have been and therefore also how much chaos this is gonna cause to Leagues, Clubs, Players etc

However, like a team or loathe them it is always IMHO sad when summat like this happens

Altrincham FC First Team / Can you Help Please?
« on: June 14, 2013, 09:54:36 AM »
As you may have seen on the Official Site tomorrow heralds the first of the Football Club's working days between 10.00am and 4.00pm

This is, as usual, to help to get the ground ready and looking good for next season

The main focus tomorrow will be to weed and brush the terraces so, if you can help please bring your gardening gloves and, if possible a hoe or a spade.

Even if you can only give an hour, every contribution will be appreciated.

Slightlly "off topic" perhaps and, if so I apologise

Altrincham's own Select Group Referee Anthony Taylor has been promoted to the FIFA Referee list from January 1st 2013

A superb achievement for a local lad and (as ESPN have mentioned on more than one occasion) an Alty Fan as well.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re Stewarding, Sterile Areas etc
« on: August 16, 2012, 11:18:04 PM »
I have been advised by friends not to read the responses to my observations on the "brawling league" thread

So I will instead post on this one that I was not commenting on the actualities of the sterile area implemented for the Wrexham friendly, or tbh any other game.

I have my personal views as to whether this was appropriate or excessive but that was not really the issue I was trying to address, more that these decisions are not purely arbitrary but are largely based on intelligence recieved from Local Authorities,  Police Services and travelling stewards mixed in with experience and training and all of this undertaken on an entirely voluntary basis.

I apologise if any of my postings on this matter have caused offence or irritation, that was never my intention.

Altrincham FC First Team / I cannot summon up enough superlatives
« on: June 10, 2012, 10:29:36 PM »
Just seen an item on BBC News North West

Mark Maddox did the Liverpool 10k today to raise awareness of MND and, I believe to raise some cash for research into the disease too.

Despite his condition he also did it in ten minutes under his target and faster than I've ever achieved a 10K

As I said in the title I cant think of words that adequately express my appreciation of the guy or my pride at knowing him

Altrincham FC First Team / Slightly Off Topic but Great News IMHO

Sorry if this is in the wrong place but I think it worthy of mention

Altrincham's own Anthony Taylor has been appointed to Referee the FA Trophy Final this year.

This is a huge (and IMHO well deserved) honour

Altrincham FC First Team / I cannot even think of words
« on: September 28, 2011, 11:57:40 PM »
I will admit that I was a huge fan of Mark Maddox from the day he first signed for Alty

Lots has been said before during and after the fundraising events and I'm not going to go over old ground however this, from the Official site just sums up the guy for me.

The word legend is overused in football and the word hero is overused in general. Mark is both a legend and a hero to me and I'm not gonna hide that this has moved me to tears of admiration.

John Edwards, Altrincham's joint Press Officer, writes "Mark Maddox has underlined his standing as one of the most revered figures in Altrincham’s recent history after announcing he intends taking part in a sponsored walk to support his battle against illness. Club officials set up a testimonial fund, after Maddox was diagnosed with the debilitating Motor Neurone Disease, and have already staged a series of money-raising events.

The latest is a sponsored walk to Stalybridge, ahead of next month’s game there, and Maddox left chairman Grahame Rowley stunned by insisting on pounding the streets himself, despite the strength-sapping nature of his condition.

‘I asked him if he was sure, and he said:, "Oh yes, count me in. I want to do it”,’ said Rowley. ‘What can you say, except it is typical of Mark. It’s great, it really is. We are walking the first eight miles on Sunday, October 16, then the remaining nine on the day of the game at Stalybridge, the following Saturday. Mark is adamant he’s doing both, so anyone who wants to join us or sponsor someone, or both, will be most welcome.’

Details are available from the club on 0161 928 1045". They can also be emailed out by request here.

Altrincham FC First Team / Was I dreaming?
« on: September 06, 2011, 10:37:07 AM »
I know that I'm getting on a bit and the memory isn't what it was.

However, I'm seeming to remember that when we appointed the current management people were happy(ish) on the whole and were being quite unusually reasonable with regard to their expectations.

Before a ball had been kicked pre season the concensus seemed to be that this would probably be a two year project - We had been out of this level of football for some time, the Club had spent the past few years fighting relegation and had around it a pessimistic air (on the field) and most importantly we had a new management team, new players and consequently would be having to find a way to combine old and new players into what may have been a different system for many of them.

Then we have the pre seasons and, on the whole things went not too badly, we performed okay against a Man City side operating at about 40 - 50% of capacity, beat a poor Tranmere side, struggled for half a game against Trafford then battered them for 45 minutes. Were dissected by Stockport and played a fairly typical Barrow team (World beaters one week then worse than a pub team the next)

People's expectations looked up!

We are now seven games into the season with a squad of sixteen plus three youth teamers and the Assistant Manager and yet already the knives are out.

This is a hard league - it has changed significantly from the one we escaped from via the play offs. Can we not just step back a bit, put this superiority complex (pub teams, tinpot league etc) out of our minds and do the following

1) Be realistic in our expectations, particularly given squad size, budget etc

2) Give the Club (players, management, staff etc) time to resolve the issues. If we can see them then I'm bloody sure they can and I'm also bloody sure that they are doing everything in their power to resolve them

3) Our fans over the years have in general given magnificent support even when things have been less than ideal. Can we please carry on doing so?

Altrincham FC First Team / Any Value?
« on: June 16, 2011, 11:35:22 PM »
I see from the Official Site that Warren peyton has been released by Guiseley, primarily it seems, because he can't commit to training over the Pennines twice a week.

I know you should arguably never look back but, given that I think he still lives in (I believe) Ashton on Mersey, would anyone consider him worth a punt at the right money?

Altrincham FC First Team / Another one who could have been an asset
« on: May 29, 2011, 10:40:20 PM »
Sorry to bang on about this again, and I am entirely and totally aware of the current financial situation and the restrictions it places on us.

However, I see from the Official Site that Theo Kidd has moved on, presumably because he's now too old for the Youth Team and we have nowhere for him to go which would enable us to keep him at the Club.

He's a talented lad and maybe one who could have done a job for us off the bench next season

Altrincham FC First Team / Man Management
« on: October 08, 2010, 12:09:45 AM »

'For the penalty, Robbie was jockeying their player, who was out on the left of the area and going nowhere, and he had Shaun Densmore covering behind. Nine times out of 10, a fresh Robbie Lawton would not have made that challenge.

'Similarly, for the second goal, there was no threat when the ball came over. But tired minds led to a mix-up, and we gifted them another goal. It's disappointing, because, while our goals were clear cut and well worked, theirs were both giveaways.

The above is a quote from Ken McKenna which I have copied and pasted from the Official Site.

In both cases it is admitted that there were errors made. In neither case is there an excess of personal criticism. There may well have been 'words' but they will have been in private and I'd have imagined them to be delivered in a positive and encouraging manner.

To my view this is very good man management - support of ones players in public fora which is likely to engender a better response from those players than the  public filleting or humiliation which could have been indulged in.

Also, the description of our goals is phrased positively, suggesting to the players that their ability in the creation and scoring  has been identified and noted.

Another HUGE plus for Ken in my view
