ALTY supporters trust STAR has been mothballed by its members.

The decision was taken after members voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposal at the trust's AGM on Tuesday night.

STAR will now be replaced by a supporters' association, which fans believe will be more beneficial to the club.

Although STAR will continue to exist, it will no longer be an active organisation and will instead stay dormant. The trust will not be wound up completely, however, as the costs involved in such an action proved too great for members.

An open meeting will now be held in mid-September when the new supporters' association will be established.

Acting STAR chairman Brian Flynn explained the decision.

He said: “When we set up the supporters’ trust it was the right thing to do because the club was in a bad state and could’ve gone out of business.

“But now the club is in a stronnger state financially and in terms of the people running it, so there is less need for a trust.

“Also, while the principles of a supporters’ trust are still good, trying to get supporters involved in the actual processes has become difficult and time consuming for a small group of people. It became increasingly difficult to get things done because of the process and bureaucracy involved in running a trust.

"We believe this move will allow us to better help the club."
