Congratulations to York City, a good club and they deserve to be back in the football league.
-
Congratulations York on a unique double, always shown respect to their position and those around them during their time as a nonleague club. Luton fans fighting amongst themselves..,
-
reports on the NLF "Kicking off in the luton end according to 5live".. dont know how true that rumour is
-
Congratulations to York City, a good club and they deserve to be back in the football league.
And to the humble fans of little Luton we say......
"YOU'RE GONNA BE HERE FOR YEARS"
And certainly we're looking forward to seeing you in 2013-4 ::)
-
Congratulations to York City, a good club and they deserve to be back in the football league.
Unlike some other teams we could mention!
Well done to York!!!
-
Mike Bassett @themikebassett
You've got to feel for Luton Town fans. Living in Luton must be terrible.
-
Huzzah for the (not so) Damned Yorkists.
and knickers to Luton...
-
such as alty thing to do, taking so many fans and bottling
-
Whilst I know they've been twice in 7 days and money is tight,But I'm more than confident that we would have a five figure following at wembley for a conference playoff final...
-
I suppose there will be the open top bus tour, having two pots to show is a magnificent achievement. Just a bit jealous here! :-X
Congrats again to York. This must go down as one of their greatest ever weeks. Beating the mob from OT all those years ago may top it for some people?
As for Luton....better luck next season...

So, dear old Luton Town miss out on promotion yet again, eh?
Marvellous!
Partial payback for their ignoble role in the great Football League Re-election travesty of June 1980.
Long may they (and Grimsby Town) remain in the Non League ranks.

I'll never forget how they deprived us of a good pay day by refusing to switch our FA Cup replay for live tv coverage. Their in-fighting at the end there just shows them up for what they are in my eyes. Classless scumbags!

Congratulations Barry. Glad to see it's not just me who still adheres to the Sicilian "never forgive, never forget" maxim.
PS: I still feel the same way about the Miles Platting meat-packers from OT (although I realise this is far from a popular view on here!)
-
I doubt we would take more than 8k for conf play off final too much apathy in this town
-
So Luton are now well confirmed as a Non-League Club.
Next season will be their 4th year in the Conference.
It took York 8 years to get out, and if my memory is correct, not too long ago they were facing the drop to the BSN.
No sympathy for Luton at all.

Considering what we took to Stoke I think even that is optimistic. Things have changed, TV football mostly to blame I think, but also demographics, town identity and loyalty etc also, but we had 10,000 at Goodison in 1974, not much less at Anfield, about 12,000 at Wembley in 78. Any old timers know how many we had at Wolves?
Sadly I reckon today if we ever did get to Wembley we'd be lucky to take 5k.

Also back then,United and City were hardly setting the world alight as they are now, so would had been easier to get floating fans coming. With both Manchester clubs now making regular Wembley appearances, the novelty of going to the national stadium would had worn off and a lot probably wouldn't go if we got to the Trophy final.
Mick Harford is still bitter about those 30 points isn't he...

I would say finance is a big factor as well. A day out at Wembley for a family of four would be a couple of hundred quid minimum. I imagine it was somewhat cheaper in 1978, even taking into account inflation. Given the option of staying home and watching it on the box, I'm sorry to say that would be a no brainer for most neutrals/floaters.
-
i agree with the above comment the cost of such a day trip would limit us to aroung 4 to 5 thousand ,the crowd makes lutons support seem imense and york hardly supported , but dont forget luton is only 31 miles away from wembely ; would they take that many fans if it was at st james park(sports direct arena)
-

I remember they had a right whinge when it was at the Etihad last season and took nowhere near as many fans as they did today.

Quite right, too, Brian.
If, by any chance, you possess a video copy of that infamous 1980 edition of Granada TV's World In Action programme on the business practices of Louis Edwards, I'd love to borrow it...!

Speaking as a York City Council Tax payer (for 8 days honest) the same thing crossed my mind in The Bootham this afternoon.
-
Well we had 1 away at the champions leauge final so we would take a few im sure :)
-
Luton took around 11,000 to Manchester last year. Which isn't as far as Altrincham to Wembley. Realistically, I think we'd take around 4,000 or 5,000 to Wembley. Which isn't too bad.
If we were doing the equivalent of Luton's trip yesterday, e.g. Conference playoff final at Anfield, I think we'd muster a few more. Maybe more like 7,000 or 8,000.
Anyway, very well done to York City. I'm all for having a laugh at the ex FL clubs languishing in what they continuously tell us is "hell", but 8 years is quite enough. Best of luck to them next year. The fact they're actually a good footballing side should see them having a good season.

Unfortunately not. However, at the time, I lived less than a mile from their factory (in Harpurhey) and quite a few of the lads I grew up with went to work there. The hygiene practices were bad enough nevermind their business practices! (One of them even became a vegetarian because of it! - and still is 40 years later)
-
Whereabouts in Harpurhey was the factory, i live in Harpurhey and have never heard of it?

I lived in Harpurhey - the factory was in Miles Platting.
If you go down Rochdale Road to Queens Road, turn left and carry on until you cross over Oldham Road (where the 'Playhouse' used to be), it was up the first street on the left past the junction. It was a massive place but they've probably demolished years ago and built houses. I've not been there for years.

That photograph was taken at Hyde's ground last August.
I'd recognise those sprinklers anywhere.

Ha ha busted !- there was one major difference to Hyde- it was non alcholic beer only !

blimey - something of an Alty enclave is building.

Thanks a lot for all the nice comments, just shows once again what a nice bunch Alty fans are.
It's been a rollercoaster of emotion for 8 years, many highs (to be fair) and many lows (!) but I felt we deserved our success this season by trying to play football the right way, being respectful but determined, and I'm glad we did it in that way as there have been plenty of teams who have bullied their way out.
We have made some good friends and played a lot of "new" clubs over 8 years, obviously we'd played Alty before in the FA Cup, but I think I can speak for most York fans when I say there has been no nicer, welcoming bunch than you lot and our trips to Moss Lane were always brilliant days out.
I will be following your results in the hope you win Conference North and reclaim your place as one of the most famous clubs in "real" non-league. I will hopefully pop along as I'm sure Sky will start messing about with the fixtures so I'll have some free Saturdays!
Thanks again and all the best.

May I wish York City all the very best in the FL next season. Playing the sort of football they do I reckon they have a good chance of finishing well up the table. Exciting times for York fans and the MacGill family thouroughly deserve this success after years of them digging deep in their pockets.

Agreed
-
I echo the good wishes to York. Going there was always a pleasure - apart from the primitive loos (!) - a grand day out what with the city itself, the railway museum, the Roman walls and some very welcoming folk at the football ground, who were happy to accept where they were in the 'pecking order' and not try to play the 'big club'. I hope they thrive in the Football League.
-
York are a strange club as they do not have many traditional rivalries due to it’s location. Scarborough were a rival, but they have since drifted into obscurity due to financial troubles. Its a good day out for the away fan I agree, with the racing and pubs in town. The plans for the new ground going ahead must have given everyone a massive boost.
Luton Town will get up eventually as well.
Well done Yawk
-
Echo what's been said about York. Always a decent away day (even the last one, a tame 3-0 defeat after I'd come out of Leeds Festival for it), and a proper club who knew it had to work it's way back to where it should be. Will be more than equipped for League 2, and I expect them to be comfortable mid-table, possibly challenging for the play-offs.

Pleased though I am for York CFC, and the city, I couldn't bring myself to pop along and watch. I am jealous...
LEE, I WANT SOME OF THIS FOR ALTY NEXT SEASON.

I remember our last open top bus parade through Altrincham in May 1999 that concluded outside Altrincham market in front of about 15 Alty fans and a few bemused shoppers. The lads' efforts really deserved a lot better than that........ :(

I went to every match that season and didn't even realise we had an open top bus parade! It must have been done in secret!
-
I seem to recall it took place on a Saturday morning immediately after the players had returned from a club holiday? Perhaps it was arranged at very short notice, I can't really remember now.
-
Personally i am very happy York won. I had a small bet on them. Luton is a horrible place full of horrible people. The team are followed by bully boy wannabe hooligans who would run a mile if they ever met any serious opposition, remember what happened in 1985 when they tried it on with Millwall. The only bad news is the BSP has to put up with them for at least another season.

Oi! i may not be a native knuckle dragger but I'm here 5 days a week and I take offence at that... I've met 3 people who are nice people. ;) ;D

Turn left out of the station and you will find some good pubs and good people in high town
That said to say Luton are wannabe hooligans is a little naive, they have a well known mob, feared well beyond the conference
-
Worth pointing out here what an incredible job Gary Mills has done there since he arrived. York weren't consistently challenging at the top before that, in fact they only stayed up one season due to beating Weymouth's kids twice in a week towards the end of the season.
Also, even though he doesn't play for us I think I love Matty Blair, talk about a hero!!
Luton 1-2 York
A.Gray Goal 2' 26' Goal A.Chambers
[b 47' Goal. M. Blair [/b]
FA Trophy Newport 0-2 York
64' Goal M.Blair 71' Goal L.Oyebanjo
Conference Premier Mansfield 0-1 York (agg 1 - 2)
111' Goal M.Blair
So that's a late extra time winner (at Mansfield) in the play off semi, a goal in the Trophy final victory and the winning goal in the play off final??
Player of the month for May? imagine how godd that'd be!
