And if we had stipulated a higher trigger level than he wanted then he could have just not signed, walked away and we've had have no money nor the benefit of his performances. That's what contract negotiations are about, I think it worked well for both parties.

I think getting a decent striker/forward is more important than worrying about the Trophy

The potential financial benefits to be gained from progressing in the Trophy would strengthen our power in the transfer market.

While I think Trophy success is long overdue and a realistic target this season, the money received for winning a tie (at home anyway) just provides compensation for the half gate receipts we have to give to the opponents.

I think the total prize money if we win it is about £100k which is not to be sniffed at and will be a much bigger chunk of our budget than some of the bigger clubs in our league. The prestige and trip to Wembley matters more to me though.

Some Grade A moaning going on in here today! Even more than normal…..which is quite an achievement. An outsider wouldn’t believe we are in our strongest League position for years, in a good position to reach the 1/4 Final of the Trophy, transitioned successfully to a full time model, in a current unbeaten 10 game run….as well as being financially sound (particularly in the current cost of living ‘crisis’ — see Southend/Sc*nthorpe).
Ok - we’ve sold a top player and some loans have gone back to their parent Clubs….it’s football! I prefer to trust the Management Team that got us here in the first place, instead of all the doom and gloom merchants in here, to sort out the players we may need in as replacements.
Honestly guys, give your heads a wobble!

We've lost 3 and soon to be 4 of of front line, going back to a weaker sqaud than the one we had during 10 games without a win... I'd say thats definitely cause for concern.

In particular, when weve done so well, and so financially well off (500k seeder, more board incestment6than I've ever seen, 50k+ for Coclough)

In fairness, I don't think anyone should think for one second that the club is sitting on half a million of cash and twiddling it's thumbs. It's clear that they run a tight ship budget wise and that money is probably earmarked for different things short and long term which will include players.

If we are developing players, selling them for a good profit and putting the money back in to strengthen things on and off the pitch then surely that's a good thing? Playing the loan market shrewdly too is part of parcel of the modern game as others have said.

The management can bring in Johnston, Colclough, Jones, Smith, Mullarkey etc so surely we can have faith in them to get it right again. A bit of patience and perspective is needed and it's a nice problem in some ways.

Factor in though any signing on fee for the player from the new club, the bonus structure, expenses etc. Factor in also a hefty fee we would get that could go into future squad wages moving forward which we wouldn't have got if we'd hung on until the summer.  Then you've got the player's own motivation and ambition. It's a lot more complex than an extra grand a week to solve it all.

The board can't say anything until negotiations are concluded and the other club has made an announcement. Also if the oldham deal falls through, I'm sure there will be other bids, so they can't even say he is staying.

The club is on a different level now, so we shouldn't expect ongoing commentary from the board.

Nonsense. The club could say there have been bids without divulging much more.
Also, we may be on a different level now but aren't we supposed to be a family club? And aren't we part of the family?
We're at the same level as, for example, Oldham and apparently word has got out at their end (to put a bit of pressure on). We need to be as savvy as them.

How does the club officially tell "the family" about ongoing transfer discussions without divulging it to the whole world?

Have Oldham actually issued anything official? If they haven't then nor should we.

Why is it so important for us to know officially that we have received a bid for a player? Is it just to satisfy our curiosity?

We're a full time, professional club and I would have no problem with things being kept quiet in terms of transfer dealings until everything is completed. I don't honestly see what the issue is.

OK, I've booked the girls and I for the away coach, via the Alty website and pre-paid it. It has been a couple of seasons since I last attended an away match, and I am unsure where you find the times from each joining point, which I assume are still the same places.

Can anybody advise me?

I'd call the club in the first instance. They took the booking after all.

That's the biggest load of Tosh I have ever heard in my life.

Why would Colclough go to Oldham? A team struggling near the bottom, with poor management and disillusioned fans. When he is loved at our place. Despite the size of the club, the whole ethos seems to be wrong there. The Oldham fans sound pretty deluded there too, and somewhat desperate that they have to try and de-stabilize our club.

Any money that Dan Mooney has some regrets about going to Southend, hopefully Ryan and others will learn from that experience.

The grass ain't always greener on the other side. Our club is building from strength to strength, why would any player throw that away now?

More money? Family to support? Higher living costs? No real impact on travelling? A good dressing room and having your name chanted doesn't pay the bills. I hope he stays of course but I wouldn't blame him if the maths made the decision.

I also confess to be confused on how we can be better of after a loss. Would need to see the full PandL to understand it

Sale of shares? Investment? Grants from conference? Sky TV money?

I'll double check on this and happy to stand corrected but money coming in from share issues etc doesn't count towards turnover. Therefore it won't show on the profit or loss figures but the cash coming in from it will show as an asset on the balance sheet.

I'm not particularly concerned about the loss because the board had clearly budgeted for this to happen and the cash in the bank absorbed it. What I will say is that if we hadn't been more "commercial" (which some fans seem to bemoan) then the losses would have been far bigger. Changing kit suppliers, revamping the website etc. is done for a reason.

Seedr's closed today with around £520k of investment.

So the £192K that we lost last year is at least covered.

Given that we had budgeted to lose a larger amount I would guess so...

the sad truth is the fan zone has been an unmitigated disaster from it's inception

From what was shared as the vision quickly became a nightmare

From the closure of the ground and lost revenue. The ongoing barriers around the ground from that issue . The inflating costs associated to the fan zone works. The way libero were cast aside. Then the subsequent works delivered in the area to give an intial capacity of
Agreed. It’s an unmitigated amateurish shambles. But don’t forget the current board are more interested in revenue streams than piss streams. Installing toilets yields no revenue. The Fanzone is yet another way of emptying football supporters’ pockets, the goal of our board. Surely if you want a good beer in a hospitable environment then go to a pub/ bar, don’t expect a football club to meet your needs - but this board will try and meet them on the cheap and to the detriment of supporters who are actually interested in football.

Further to the other responses to this on here, I'm curious as to how you expect a football club to fund itself to play at a decent level without "emptying supporters pockets" or "revenue streams"?

If you are so adverse to this method, where should our income actually come from? Please do tell.

I'm genuinely baffled why the board trying to bring more money into the club by opening more catering and hospitality is viewed as such a bad thing...

As for the fan zone project itself it has been very poorly managed and communicated at times, but I am glad it is now moving in the right direction.

Just to respond to Bob's very fair and measured post, it is not difference of opinion that I have any issue with, it is the damaging tone of some of the topics on here that bothers me. Some fans on here would doubtless see us go back to crowds of 600 and regional, part-time football.

Of course, all is subjective and this does not apply to all posts or users.

What you say about the very narrow demographic of users on here is spot on, where as many fans have moved on to talking about Alty via other means, there will be equally as much disagreement but it is more balanced out by a wider range of views.

Absolutely agree 100%

Can we do something about the decrepit old men we have that appear to come to the game and complain about strange things? If it's not our top goal scorer it's our future fans. I'm also concerned that while they are snapping their necks to stare and tut that they might lose their balance and fall over popping a hip in the process.

Honestly this forum is a cesspool. Never change everyone

This forum is indeed, for the most part, an absolute cesspool.

Some users on here seem to be able to turn even the most positive of issues, such as young fans being on the increase, into negative vitriol.

Honestly, I've gone from reading everyday to avoiding it most of the time. Either more fans need to use it or it can close down and I doubt most would miss it.

You're going to get difference of opinion on any forum, and it's healthy to have it. The issue on this one is that there has clearly been a decline in posts and posters over the last few years while our actual support base has grown. It also gives the impression of having quite a narrow demographic compared to those who actually follow the club.

That's not a criticism of anyone, and fair play to everyone who supports or runs here. It has its place and clearly is valued a lot by some.  I also can't help but think that forums at other clubs face the same challenges. It just isn't the definitive voice of the fans or link to the club that some on here perhaps might think it is.

If we're complaining about damage to the ground or the safety of the kids then fair enough. If we're moaning about the irritation factor then that's a very slippery slope. There are all manner of irritations at a football match, let's embrace the increased interest and people coming through the doors who never bothered for years, even decades.

This is the firm that redeveloped Salford's ground; currently building an impressive lengthways stand at South Shields:

https://www.stadiumsolutions.co.uk/news/stadium-solutions-constructing-cutting-edge-stand-at-south-shields-fc/

No idea how much something like this would cost.

Same company that did Accrington's. Up to £3m according to reports but it will have boxes, hospitality etc. It's open already.

You'd think that if you stripped out the internal infrastructure - or even just replace with internal toilet blocks to make use of the space underneath, with entrances from each side (Fan Zone on ours) - it could be a fraction of that cost... and you could reclaim the space where the unsightly catering / toilets are currently situated near the away turnstiles, so any redevelopment of Chequers could go all the way across, leading to increased capacity / keeping away fans on that end only.

I think the issue with chequers is the sub station which apparently would cost a fortune to move.

As for the popular side, there's nothing to strip out. It's just a shallow terrace with old cladding and the lower roofs would be useless with seating underneath. The whole side needs demolishing, spectator areas brought nearer the touchline, steeper rake of seating and then more space behind for catering and hospitality.

Interestingly, South Shields didn't put a terrace in front of their stand because of the space it would take up; they probably felt the space would be better used and more lucrative by having boxes at the back.

Of course, our board has shown it's own vision for the ground so I'm sure something will be on the agenda.
