'Tis upon us Ladies and Gentlemen...

I actually look forward to friendlies. Good relaxed catch up with pals, no pressure on result...

Its an absolute disgrace we've not scored yet!
On a more serious note, Quite excited for this now!

We've had a few in recent seasons who should have been put on trial........
-
Can we please stop making that joke? It has been made a million times!
That joke is nearly as bad of a joke as our defence..
-
Would be keen to see at least another centre back and a full back in before Saturday, but no panic yet.
-
Really looking forward to seeing us play - especially seeing the new lads and see what theyre like
There will be cakes too ;D

How do you get to grnd by car ?
A satnav is essential for this one ! It's in a maze of streets off Hyde Road, between Mount Road and Reddish Lane.

Thank you Phil

Thxs for great Directions. one and all

Looking ahead to Saturday’s first pre-season friendly, at Abbey Hey (3pm), Sinnott added: ‘This is an ideal opportunity to have a look at a few trialists and a few youth team players. Don’t forget, that’s how Adam Reid and Duncan Watmore came to our attention last season. It’s an example of what George Heslop has achieved with the youth set-up, and if they are good enough, they will get a chance.
‘It will be a valuable exercise for getting players back into match mode, but, in an ideal world, I wouldn’t want to give anyone longer than 45 minutes. At this early stage, there is always a risk of players overstretching and picking up injuries, and I want to avoid that'".

can't take too much from the first pre season game....it was interesting though....the two new centre backs looked a different class in particular in bringing the ball out, dunacan 'head up' looked really good but 2-0 flattered us a bit at HT....2nd half we ran them ragged with what appeared to be most of our youth team and they tired very quickly.
Special shout out for their No2 'tyler' (presumably named after bonnie or maybe rose tyler from dr who?) who looked straight off the jeremy kyle show and took the whole thing rather too seriously and was subbed before he got sent off for getting upset when players made the most of it after he'd scythed them down.....
all in all it's a nice little friendly place to go for the first pre season match despite the surroundings and the air gun pellett dents in the back of the terracing...
-
A mention for our first half no 11, a triallist who looked pretty decent. Produced the best piece of skill in the whole game before being cynically hauled down by the aforementioned Tyler. Liked the fact that Hall and Havern don't just lump it, but can play a 30 yard pass ! Brooke and Mitchley showed some nice touches, but we'll know more after they've faced more experienced defenders. And I confess, I DID eat all the pies ;D

I notice Ashley Young played for us. was he better than he was playing for England?

I thought he had a look of Jason about him too. And he looked useful if not brilliant.

First-Half Team
DENSMORE - played RB and put in a few decent tackles - Be interesting to see if he's RB or CM next season
HAVERN - only Abbey Hay, but commanded the back line well and quite happy for Coburn to roll/pass to him and not feel the need to shoot/play it over the top
HALL - same for Hall
GRIMSHAW - didn't see much of the ball down the left really - would want to see more from him before a decision is made
WATMORE - (aka The Dunc) Ran rings around their LB cutting inside and potentially a huge threat next season - caused the FK for the 2nd goal, and scorer of the 1st
RODGERS - a little sloppy in his passing at time (only his first game though) - he is, however, Huge and protected the defence. He won't run the show but he will allow the wingers/other CM to get foreward
MATHER - a new trialist - Moved to Woodley from New Mills and looked lively first half. We've quite a few strikers now, however I'd like to see him up against better defenders
BROOKE & MITCHLEY - Played well and chased down things despite the heat and perhaps lack of fitness with it only being week 3 of training. Mitchley (i think) nearly scoring goal of the season
2nd half team
12. Matt DOUGHTY - our token ex-player - didn't stand out but it was only game 1
6. Greg PEARSON - not sure who he was? Guessing the CB
Ashley YOUNG (aka Ash) I thought he played well, can pick a pass - I'd like to see more of him in the next few friendlys
Matthew FEARON - bit rash in his tackles at times but he could learn a lot from Rodgers
Derryn OFORI and Denico WALTERS - I'm starting to think George runs a sprinting academy as our youth strikers are rapid! These 2 lads were like better Mullhollands. I'd love to bring on Denico Walters and Watmore last 10 minutes to run at tired defences - thought they played well yesterday - perhaps trying to do much at times (for instance, tried to curl it tip corner from 7 yards out rather than smashing it in) but they never stopped running (Walters is no longer eligible for the youth, and Ofori has 1 year left)
-
Those two strikers were good athletically but I really don't think they looked anywhere near up to standard yet. People around me agreed they didn't look like they knew what they were doing. Sorry but not anywhere near bsn standard yet!

Didn't say they were the finished article but a lot of potential.
One of the lads has another year with George, whilst Walters has to find and senior club. They played some great football down the right hand side with Young and Lawrie

This.

To be honest mate just think its going a bit far saying they are "better mullhollands" and you want denico on the bench when they basically stuggled against a nw counties side

I didn't think they struggled At all (considering his age and it being his first game).
I didn't say he ran the show exactly but I don't see over the course of the season why we wouldn't put him on the bench now and again?
Having his pace alone on the bench Would be useful especially against some of the lesser sides
It's not like I'm demanding him to be on every team sheet. But from the 45 minutes he got today he is an interesting prospect.
-
Let's see what the rest of pre season brings then.

Hopefully 7 clean sheets!
Ashley young young young!

Loved the picture of James Lawrie 'celebrating' after scoring a penalty on Saturday.
No one celebrates quite like Alty!!
-
for me the two young forwards emphasised the need for alty to either have a reserve side or some agreement with a developing side to bring these lads on and bridge the gap between youth and 1st team...the two lads as well as a few others from the youth team were a breath of fresh air and provided absolutly scintillating pace, great entertainment and some good technical skills....some lad stood next to me commented it was like watching brazil....it's a real shame one of them is now too old for the youth team but possibly we'll have to let go as he is possibly just not quite developed enough for the 1st team BSN standard.....they actually ripped the NW Counties side's defence apart I thought for half an hour albeit they were fresh and the defence was already tired.
Comments like not knowing what they were doing are harsh to say the least, one of the lads won the penalty and the other did a fine assist for lawries goal.....obviously they are not the finished article but they showed real potential...only lacking in a bit of stamina and finishing ability once they'd worked their way brilliantly into scoring positions....to be fair some of the established players looked rusty and sluggish..
Good luck to the lads I say, a credit to george heslop who i am pleased to say had the professinalism to wear a suit on saturday! ;D

Agree,but can we afford it?
-
probably not....an agreement with a developing club would be advantageous...sort of a feeder club to alty...you'd have to find a club of the right standard who would be in need of players like our too old youth players who struggle to get hold of them otherwise.
I know it's a difficult and probably impossible gap in the system to fill I'm just commenting on it
what tends to happen is they either disappear out of football altogether or turn up somewhere like fleetwood or morecambe via a few years at trafford or flixton and spend the next ten years full time and banging in goals for fun.....then someone comments "didn't we have him in our youth team once?"...and the cult comes up with a date and match none of us can remember and several statistics on the match including george heslop's choice of sock colour ...
