Title: Stalybridge - Match Thread
Post by: Mrs Warbouys on October 06, 2016, 09:56:57 AM
Good interview with Jim Harvey on radio robins last night as Jim and buzz attended the youth team fixture. He travelled to west Cumbria on Tuesday night to take on Workington v Matlock, as anyone who's undertaken that journey in midweek will know that's real commitment to the cause. Seems like we might have a clean bill of health bar Shaun densmore for Saturday. Without putting pressure on Saturday is a massive game, as big as we've had in a long time and a defeat will leave us in real trouble. It's a very local game and trains are half hourly from Piccadilly and it takes 12 minutes from there to stalybridge. And it's only £4.70 return from Alty somlets hope the lads have a big following backing them. No idea on a Saturday 11 after last Saturday, I'll leave it others!

Like Pete, I won't put in a proposed line-up. The question for me is, who steps aside to allow Marsh to start ? I was quite impressed with him when he came on against Morpeth - and of course he and Wilko know each other's game

Will be good to see Marsh and Reeves up front together. Miller and Wilkinson will provide excellent service. If our defenders are back, I'll be optimistic for the first time this season.

I've no idea what the team might be - it's just an idea in the mind of Jim at this stage, I presume. However, I would find it a little surprising if Marsh were to start, given how little football he's played lately - I suspect coming on after an hour or so might be the plan for him on Saturday. I hope Richman will be fit to start - for my money we badly need his energy & willingness to challenge for the ball in midfield in order to create the room for Wilkinson's more adventurous passing game - and that Hannigan's withdrawal last Saturday was just the precaution it was rumoured to have been at the time, as Cyrus badly needs his guidance. God and the 409 & 237 buses willing, I'll be there!

i think to play 5/3 at the back the wing backs have to be incredibly fast and fit,is this the case with the fullbacks we have?

Not seen enough of Doughty to comment but I'd imagine he'd be fit enough with him being on loan from a full time club and IMO Patterson is good enough and fit enough to play as a wing back.

Both quick and fit enough in my opinion

Playing 3 centre backs will forever remind me of the Danny Higginbotham saga - we got away with it v Leamington (cheers Wally), we certainly didn't v Gainsborough  :-\

Can't blame a system for shoehorning a player in

Sounds like a bog awful game between relegation fodder to me. I was worried when I saw our starting 11.

I heard none of the game, barely dared look at the Matchday Updates either. No idea how we played but that doesn't matter too much. It was vital we got three points today, the clean sheet was a very welcome bonus indeed. We have scored five without reply in the last two games with Matlock at home coming up. Wins and clean sheets win us much needed points but builds confidence. Really pleased with the progress we are making with Jim at the helm, keep up the work rate. Come on Alty.

Whilst we struggled in the first half, our second half performance was more encouraging. In fairness it would be flattering to describe Stalybridge as mediocre, but you can only beat what's put in front of you. Both goals were excellent.

A special mention for Josh Doherty, who had a steady game, and then moved forward more after Miller was subbed, and provided a real attacking threat.

For your information, Andy Dawber was unavailable yesterday having been admitted to hospital suffering from a kidney infection. Kept in overnight as a precaution.

My first away game for many a year, poor game but stuck to the task of keeping a clean sheet and got a reward with two fine late goals. Nice little ground, very welcoming. Could do without the flare in the second half. We estimated 300 away fans which is excellent.
