There's a rumour going on Confguide that with major sponsors having pulled out, the players are being made to take a 50% wage cut. Anyone else come across this or know any more about it?

Following the financial situation that is affecting the country as a whole, Grays Athletic FC regretfully announces the following.

The clubs three major sponsors have been forced to withdraw their financial support for the club and therefore some drastic economic cuts will have to be made.

After an emergency board meeting the clubs directors have stated the following;

The general running costs involved in providing over night accommodation, transport and medical cover during the season will be greatly affected.

Salaries paid to contract / non contract players and staff will have to be reduced, this would mean players salaries being cut by 50% from now, the club would however seek to repay the deficit at times when funds are available.

Players who are affected by the changes will be free to leave the club with immediate affect; however the club will make every effort to minimise the disruption to training and preparation for matches.

Chairman Mike Woodward states “I have nothing to hide, the whole country and many businesses and football clubs are in a state of uncertainty, living beyond their means, not knowing where money is coming from to pay employees wages, the club are making the players, the Football Conference, the FA and the general public aware of the situation now rather than waiting until the end of the month when wages and bills may not be met”.

“I can assure everyone that creditors have or will be paid in full by the end of the month and you can rest assure that Grays Athletic FC will fulfil all fixtures for the remainder of the season”

I like Grays as a whole and we have a short but interesting rivalry with them.

But some of their fans are very unappreciative of Mr Woodward's contribution and don't seem to realise without him they would still be an unheard of part time outfit a couple of leagues below.....some even accused him of pocketting transfre money!

Grays seem to have taken quick action on this and may yet benefit as we have by being a club that cut their cloth when the time came.

With the credit crunch now affecting football clubs how long before Geoff Goodwin is appointed chancellor of the Exchequor?

Bad news. Given what they have done for us in the past its probably the last team in this league i'd want this to happen to after ourselves.

Good luck to Grays for the rest of the season.

At least they're taking the hit now than going to the wall later on. Clubs of the world, take note.

I like Grays and wish them well, their Chairman is a good friend of AFC, but we all know they have spent big over several seasons.
They have had some great times whilst it has lasted; 2 FA Trophy wins and just missing out on the Football League. However it looks like they have problems now that the novelty has worn off with the big money backers.

If true it will be interesting to see which players stick it out on lower wages and which choose to leave. That is assuming that there is not a third option, i.e refuse to accept a paycut and then sue for breach of contract.
