Defending at Corners and Set Pieces
« on: August 12, 2007, 08:42:27 AM »

Does anybody know why we always have 11 players back in our box defending?

All it means is that if we successfully defend the corner/freekick the ball just comes straight back as there is nobody up front to hold the ball or pressurise the opposition defender.

It also means that the opposition can have 9 players in and around our box. Surely it makes more sense to leave somebody up front.

Now that you mention it, it is a very valid point, and come to think of it I do remember the ball just getting hoofed back into the box when we cleared the corner and it allows teams to keep the pressure on...and I also noiced that when Exeter defended a corner successfully they played one ball over to the right and they always had someone with pace running onto it...this could be where matty berkely and his pace comes in handy, say late in the game, when we're under pressure, he could be just the man you want to chase defensive clearences and hopefully create opportunities!

You'll love the photograph at the top of John Laidlar's report of the game at FGR yesterday then....!

I thought that as well but if you look hard to the left of the picture there is another Alty player right behind Chris Lane.

If anyone questions John laidlar again, there will be a weeks suspension from posting on this board.

The great man should never be doubted.

Even at 10:55 when you are refreshing and thinking there may not be an update today..up pops a full page to get stuck into.
