Leaders on the pitch
« on: February 03, 2023, 08:19:02 AM »

With Hulme’s game time limited and potentially not in PP’s long term plans, after losing Ryan and Toby, we are now desperately in need of leadership on the pitch. Toby should have been club captain by a country mile, no offence to Jordan but we now seek our new leader(s). It actually worries me with so many potential new starters tomorrow, we will lack those senior leaders within the ranks. With so many young recruits, loan deals coming in I’m looking across our team and wondering where that leadership is coming from? I’m sure by next season we will be changing tact and onboarding a number of full time “contracted” players. So who is our future captain/vice captain to galvanise this team?

I was thinking about this myself. I’ve always felt that the club captain should be a consistent starter.

I would imagine J Jones, Baines or Marriott might be candidates?

Josh Lundstram must be up there for the captaincy?

Lunny was given the armband once Hulme went off last Saturday, which should tell you all you need to know.

Was he just the nearest person to Hulme? A quick decision? A great player but don’t see much from him in relations to leadership, driving the team and communication.

Leading by example via perfomance on the pitch means more in my opinion . The management team pitch side provide the necessary verbals.

I think Parky tends to favour the lads from the inner social circle - prominent on player social media, nights out etc - which is what Jordan and Toby were.

Judging by the pictures of nights out etc - I'd say Isaac Marriott seems to be front and centre, Lewis Baines gets involved quite a bit too. They'd be my 1 and 2.

Josh Lundstram is obviously our best player now (alongside Isaac) - but I don't really see him in those social situations quite as much.

I could obviously be miles off with this.

It will be Lundstram, but the only voice I hear is Baines

SeeingnHulme try and link fans and new players in the IOM suggests captaincy is as much off the oitch as on.

To be fair, Jake Moult was as understated as Lundstram perhaps is. Colclough captained us in the absence of Hulme and Mullarkey this season, so I wouldn't read too much into the past boisterous appointments of Hulme/Thompson - but I do take the point.

Agree with the comments on Baines.

I totally agree… it’s not just about being a good player, it’s someone that will step up and carry burden, fight when the going gets tough and raises spirits within the team and fans.

Baines is probably my choice too should Hulme leave (top lad that he is)

Baines is the most suitable on pitch leader and captain going forward & he’s not likely to leave anytime soon I’d think either. He’d be my choice as Captain now.
