Altrincham v Grantham
« on: April 04, 2007, 04:09:08 PM »

I run the official Grantham Town website and I'm currently filling in missing information from previous meetings, Alty and Grantham have met on four occasions, however I'm missing the ALty line-ups from two of them.

Can anyone help with this information from the 1979/80 season, when the two sides met in the FA Trophy ?

@ Grantham

@ Altrincham (replay)

Have you got the game played in the late 60s early 70s a sort of cahllenge match between Southern League and NPL champions. I think we lost at Moss Lane!

We went to Grantham for this game, don't remember much except I think half of their ground was a cricket pitch and I'm sure Graham Heathcote himself equalized for Alty that day.........

Not sure what match(es) you are on about here, Grantham didn't join the Southern League until 1972/73 (at First Division level) for which we won, the following year we finished 2nd in the Premier (and that is the highest we have finished at Premier level), so unless it was because we won the First Division I can't see or understand why we played.

Would love to know more, if you have further info.

You are probably thinking of the 1967 FA Cup tie @ Grantham:

I strongly suspect that you are confusing Grantham with Gainsborough Trinity here!

Think you might be getting confused a bit here.

Apart from anything else, Alty never won the NPL did they?!

If it was the Gainsboro match it was in the build up to the NPL. We played them as Cheshire League Champions (It was before the end of the 1967-8 season when we finished runners-up to Macc after winning it the previous 2 years) and Gainsborough were Midland League Champions. The match finished 3-3 I seem to recall.

We also played another friedly against the Lancashire Combination champions, Morecambe, and got absolutely battered (I think it was 4-0, but I could be mistaken)

That was my first real reality check as an Alty fan outside the parochial environment of the Cheshire League!
