Have to Take Issue with this - sorry
« on: April 30, 2007, 03:06:49 PM »

Posting from the Aldershot Forum

I hope your player who broke his leg suffers no lasting damage. To be honest I thought it was an appalling challenge by our player and he was lucky not to be sent off. I understand he's only a youngster who'd just signed a new contract and I hope he makes a swift recovery

As someone who was no more that about 5 yards from it I have to take issue with the above statement. There was no intent to 'do' the player and the picture that can be seen makes the challenge look worse than it was. I've been involved with Football for a long time, watching Alty for best part of 40 years (yes I started young) and refereeing for 14, I know a malicious challenge when I see one and that on Saturday wasn't.

Not trying to cover anything up because that would make me and Alty fans in general look stupid but it is possible for an accidental collision to cause the sort of damage that the poor Aldershot Player sustained.

Scotty isn't the sort of guy to deliberately try to hurt someone and in my view (shared incidentally by the Referee and the Aldershot Manager) he didn't on this occasion either.

I too hope the lad makes a quick recovery and suffers no long term damage

I never said he deliberately tried to "do him". From where I was stood it looked a poor challenge but I also never said it was "deliberate".

Why are you taking it upon yourself to try and make fans of this club look like complete arseholes? I said it as I saw it, but don't put words in my mouth which I never used!

You can come on here and go "Blah blah, I know I'll get Peaked for this" but what do you think gives you the right to misrepresent me in this way? It's bang out of order and you need to get a life instead of picking holes in other people's opinions/rights to an opinion. Just what is your problem?

Don't have a problem actually and I do have a life.

Nor do I think that I'm trying to make anyone look like anything let alone an arsehole.

I also said it as I saw it. You described it on the Aldershot Forum as an appalling challenge not a poor one. You also intimated that you thought Scotty should have been sent off. I described what I saw possibly from a bit nearer than you in an attempt to put things into some sort of context for those a good way away who may not have seen it so clearly or didn't know exactly what took place .

This is a forum for people to express their views as I am frequently told, so I did so. Don't like it - tough, as I am also frequently told.

Can I ask incidentally why you didn't post on THIS forum that you thought it was 'appalling'?

If you feel that I have misrepresented you then I apologise unreservedly. I didn't know you were that sensitive

You quoted me as saying Scotty tried to "do him" and this is completely untrue!

Also, you ask why I didn't post the same thing on here. The post was entitled "Thank you" and was (believe it or not) intended to thank ALDERHOT'S FANS for their generous applause after Saturday's game. It looked from where I was standing as though it was an appalling challenge which possibly warranted a red card. I was wrong - that doesn't bother me.

It's the way you come on here saying "I must take issue with this" which gets up people's nose so much. Could you be more pompous if you tried? You completely misquoted me and I'm afraid I'm not being over-sensitive, I am actually quite justified in putting you right.

You also said I accused Scotty of deliberately trying to injure their player and that is completely untrue also.

from where i was it looked like a pure accident and possibly a bit too much want from scotty. he did well to get there, as he was always looking second best, and the chALLENGE WAS A BIT HARD AND THERE WAS, IM SURE BECAUSE I KNOW THE TYPE OF PLAYER HE IS, THAT IT WAS 100% ACCIDENT

SGA,

Please point out where I quoted you saying that Scotty tried to 'do' him. I never made that quote because you never said it. What I did do, and I was probably incorrect in so doing, was to interpret  your description of the tackle as appalling to mean that there was intent to cause injury to the Aldershot player. This is the inference of 99.99% of such descriptions of tackles as appalling. You are obviously the other 0.01% who didn't mean that.

I am aware of the post in which your comment appeared and I agree wholeheartedly with every word except for your interpretation of the challenge.

Maybe I'm misreading things here but, up to now the only person who seems even moderately offended by my post is you. It is not my intention to be pompous but, if I wanted to I could do a lot better that this believe me.

I would respectfully suggest that I have not misquoted you at all but I suspect that we'll have to agree to disagree over that too and that as I haven't misquoted you, you are in fact not putting me right but are expressing your displeasure at my posting which you are fully  entitled to do although the issue of justification is perhaps yet another area of contention.

I will say this for the final time now. If I have caused you offence then I apologise to you unreservedly. I see no value in continuing this on a public forum but should you want to take issue with anything else just pm me so we don't have to expose the rest of the forum to our disagreements.

It was an appallingly clumsy reckless challenge by scotty but with clearly no intent to injure from Scotty who is rarely booked and has no reputation for being dirty. With a few minutes to go I think our players were desperatly diving into challenges desperate to get the ball. There is no way you can say it was a well executed clean tackle I don't think and it is no surprise a referee takes the view that this is a clean challenge but would book someone for having irregular underwear showing.

And by putting ' ' around the do it does give the impression of a quote (although obviously " and " is the proper way to quote someone)

I'm absolutly confident ATS could indeed succeed in being more pompous and I think it was a nice touch for SGA to go on the shots forum and acknowledge it was an awful tackle and to wish the injured player a swift recovery.....this was more than Ashton Utd did for Marcus hallows which got my goat.

The camera doesn't lie and it looked as bad a challenge as the one on Marcus...although that time the ref was excused because he didn't even see the incident....which makes  it all OK.

We all know if the ref had indeed sent Scotty off we'd have Phil analysing the photo and telling how it shows Scottys studs up, the ball gone and how this contravenes rule such and such and a full explanation of why refs have been told to clamp down on this.

No Alty fans suggested the Ashton player intended to 'do' / end Marcus' career but both challenges were similar.

Incidentally i thought the ref was excellent on Sat'dee apart from not giving us one out of about 5 good penalty appeals...I got the impression the shots players were actually trying to give us a penalty by violently shoving Talbs and bandy around and catching the ball on the edge of the box etc.

Incidentally the player is apparently still in Wythenshawe awaiting his operation and I'd be very surprised if the club and maybe even Scotty haven't  kept close check on him and paid a visit sent flowers grapes and a porn mag...least we could do.

These things happen in football, all players mistime challenges from time to time and it is very unfortunate that this ended as it did...
