For whatever reason I didn't receive last week's e-newsletter so don't have the answer to the last brainteaser - apologies. So, here we go for the penultimate time:

In a singles tennis tournament, 111 players participated. They used a new ball for each new match. When a player lost one match, he or she was eliminated from the tournament. How many balls did they need?

Assuming the loser of each match kept the matchball

I'd say 110 ?

Two if they were men, none if they were ladies.

Who did the 111th person play?

Start backwards from the final and work on the principle that the loser in each match gets to keep the matchball -

The winner in the final gets the cup whilst each loser at each round gets a matchball - 110 losers one winner equals 110 balls

Simples !!

111 players = 55 games + 1 person who got a bye? = 55 balls to start with

add on 27 matches in round 2 (+ one bye)

etc

so is it Gloria Gaynor?

Not a very clear question but the answer might be:

Preliminary Round of 47 matches, 94 players and therefore 17 byes - 47 balls
First Round of 17 byes + 47 winners - 64 players, 32 matches - 32 balls
Second Round of 32 winners - 16 matches - 16 balls
Thrid Round of 16 winners - 8 matches, 8 balls
Quarter Finals 4 matches, 4 balls
Semi Finals 2 matches, 2 balls
Final 1 match, 1 ball

Total balls: 47 + 32 + 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 110 BALLS
