Title: Frank Sidebottom
Post by: Wilmslow Alty on May 12, 2010, 09:15:42 AM
There's news this morning from sometime (part time?) Altrincham fan and occasional town FA Cup spokesman, Frank Sidebottom -- otherwise known as Chris Sievey -- who has Tweeted to say: "well,.. after all the hospital tests of scans, and x-rays and cameras down me etc etc ,... yes i've got cancer !!!

"but don't worry, i'm not going anywhere just yet, i'm looking forward to another 25 years in fantastic semi-professional show-bizness first!

"so i've got a few weeks off from live shows now to have a couple of ops and get shut !!!"

His Twitter feed can be found at http://twitter.com/Mr_Sidebottom (http://twitter.com/Mr_Sidebottom)

I wish him all the best and a speedy recovery

Wishing Frank all the best, and thanks for making me chuckle at Spurs 1995 when "warming up" with Paul Collings our keeper that day, Spurs fans were speechless  ;D

Strange on is Frank. He seemed to alter his song to "the Robins are bobbins" just as we were improving.

Also, 9/10 of his little sketches/songs are abysmal, then the odd one will make me roar with laughter.

Anyway, yeah, I wouldn't wish cancer on anyone. Let's hope he makes a swift recovery.

I can't stand Frank Sidebottom at all, however, as fuertes says, you don't wish cancer on anybody.

Good luck to 'Frank' and here's to a speedy recovery so you can get back to annoying me as soon as possible.

Indeed many of us have ridiculed Frank for jumping on the alty bandwagon when it suits his drive for publicity.

However I can't see anyone at Alty not wishing Frank a full recovery from this horrible disease....so I wish him all the best....he is part of alty folklore like him or not.

I have criticised Chris/Frank many times for jumping on and off the Alty bandwagon when it suited him.  However this is tragic news.

He lives three doors down from my Mum and she told me this morning about it.  The neighbour who went in to help him is also in shock.  He was apparently getting better (or so he said).

A unique talent that will be missed by many.  I've still got his album I bought in 1989..as I say a unique guy who created his own brand of humour..

I've been following his progress with the cancer on his Twitter & Facebook feeds -  he did seem confident about a full recovery. I am very much saddened to hear he lost his fight. I wanted to take Jennifer on his "magical timperley tour!"

Maybe not quite an Alty legend, but certainly a Timperley legend, this is a very sad loss to his friends, fans & family - my thoughts are with them all.

A wee Frankism for you from his Twitter: recipe for home made lucazade - some sparkling water, a egg, a packet of “cheesy watsits” & access to your mum’s blender…. it tastes exactly the same,…. but looks a bit cloudy with bits in!!! best regards frank sidebottom

Yes, echo most of the sentiments above, a great shame and too young.

Some of his antics didn't endear him to the club or fans however in his earlier days as Frank I believe he raised the profile (pre-Spurs/Lincoln etc)

I remember seeing his sort of punk band "The Freshies" at Sale Civic Hall in about 1977. The review actually made Sounds newspaper, on the same page as Kiss in somewhere like Los Angeles I think it was!
I also saw him in London as Frank playing the now sadly closed Cricketers by The Oval, must have been about 1989. A good night, still remembered by my bemused missus. RIP and hope your mum looks after Little Frank.

Anyone who makes a living out of wearing a paper mache head has to be admired ..i do agree his humour was very hit or miss ..i remember some tv clip of him beating the crap out of little Frank and it had me rolling around in tears but some of the other stuff made me cringe...

Very much a british eccentric and a sad way to go

Frank posted on his website on May 12th he had cancer.  D.A. Alty posted his message the day after Frank had told the world of his illness. So he possibly knew when he posted his message of Franks illness - he didnt wish it on him, Frank already had it. Best to dismiss his comment altogether and give it no more reference.

Your comment was made 13 may on this thread, not 2 months ago. However I accept you just didnt like the Character of Frank Sidebottom and were not directing your drivel at Chris - who after all is the person who has passed away due to his Cancer illness. Frank was just a character invented by Chris and it has to be noted that not everyone has the same sense of humour and some didnt like Frank "The Character" for whatever reason. I have no personal issue with yourself although it seems others do which should be kept seperate from this thread.
To All Readers:  Remember that a man has died due to a horrible illness. Frank the character is no more but more inportantly Chris the person is now sadly no longer with us either. Please let Chris rest in peace now and keep this thread for those who want to celebrate his life not have a go at the Character he invnted. Thanks.

D.A. is not gunners. 1978, you seem to keep spindling on about this, perhaps stop rising to it?

RIP Frank, despite souring my opinion of you towards the end I have some fond memories.

Also i'd like to say that a lot of people think of Frank as soon as alty is mentioned and vice-versa so he did publicise the club a great deal even if it was in selfish circumstances.

He'll never have the opportunity to show his support for Alty again and that is a sad sad thing.

The comic who created Frank Sidebottom is facing a pauper's funeral after dying virtually penniless.

Chris Sievey, whose alter-ego Frank's over-sized papier-mached head became a comedy icon, had no assets and little money in the bank, his family have revealed.

There are now calls to give the comic a dignified send-off. As we reported, Chris, 54, died after a battle with cancer. He was found collapsed at his home in Hawthorn Road, Hale, early on Monday and died later in Wythenshawe Hospital.

Chris leaves sons Stirling, 31, and Harry, 18, and daughter Asher, 30. Stirling said the family have been in discussion with hospital bereavement officers and a funeral director.

He said: “My father has not left any money behind and we are struggling to try and sort his funeral out. He spent money as it came in and was always a man for the moment. He never planned ahead. We have spoken to a funeral director and the sort of figures that they are talking about are too high.

“We would not know how to go about getting that sort of money at the moment. They said that applying for a pauper's funeral would be an option.

“He would not want us worrying about trying to sort it all out. We would not want our dad to have a pauper's funeral but we would not want something over the top for him too. Just something simple and dignified.”

Radio 2 DJ Mark Radcliffe, who played alongside Chris in the Frank Sidebottom Oh Blimey Big Band in the 1980s, said a pauper's funeral would be a tragedy. He said: “Something needs to be organised to give Chris the send-off that he deserves. It would be tragic for a man who brought so much enjoyment and laughter to the region to have a pauper's funeral.”

Chris was diagnosed with cancer last month and had operations to remove a tumour in his chest. He was due to start a course of chemotherapy today.

Stirling said his father remained determined to beat the illness. The results of a post mortem examination are due tomorrow. Stirling said: “We did not think he was that ill. Every time he spoke to one of us he said that it was nothing to worry about. ”

This is a very unfortunate situation. We had the same problem with my brother and raised most of the money from car boot/Ebay/private sale of his various collections. It ws a painful thing to have to do.
However, The MEN has been contacted by several people who are hoping to help Chris's family raise money to cover his funeral - I hope they can do this and give Chris/Frank a more dignified send off.

Totally Agree, I have said my condolonces to Chris's Family & friends which is what this thread is for. If I have indirectly offended anyone including DA Alty with any of my posts I APOLOGISE FOR MY PART IN THE DISCUSSIONS AS IT WAS NOT MY INTENTION. I was jsut trying to put my view point across. I've always found him very hit and miss, but that tour did have me laughing out loud a couple of times. It's a shame that quirky sense of humour is gone forever.

Am I alone in thinking, and this maybe my unspiritual nature coming out, that raising money for a funeral is just about the biggest waste of money ever?

When I die I'll be telling them to waste no cash unnecessarily. If they really feel obliged to spend some money, they can give to a hospice or one of those "take a terminally ill child on the holiday of a lifetime" charities.

For those of you who knew Chris and are interested, there are a few paragraphs about his funeral on page 11 of todays Daily Mirror.
