After years of annoyance that you couldn't access altyfans.co.uk without the www, I contacted the ISP who replied:

Altrincham FC First Team / Christmas cheer
« on: December 22, 2010, 02:37:44 AM »
Looking at the table, we have played just one of the bottom half teams at home so far this season (Barrow, taking three points). So we are yet to play nearly the entire bottom half of the table at home yet. Despite playing nearly all our home games against top half teams, our form hasn't been too bad, taking points from half of all our home games so far. If we can start recording wins at home against bottom half of the table sides, we could see ourselves start to climb off the bottom.

Always look on the bright side, etc...

Altrincham FC First Team / Frank Sidebottom
« on: May 12, 2010, 09:15:42 AM »
There's news this morning from sometime (part time?) Altrincham fan and occasional town FA Cup spokesman, Frank Sidebottom -- otherwise known as Chris Sievey -- who has Tweeted to say: "well,.. after all the hospital tests of scans, and x-rays and cameras down me etc etc ,... yes i've got cancer !!!

"but don't worry, i'm not going anywhere just yet, i'm looking forward to another 25 years in fantastic semi-professional show-bizness first!

"so i've got a few weeks off from live shows now to have a couple of ops and get shut !!!"

His Twitter feed can be found at http://twitter.com/Mr_Sidebottom

I wish him all the best and a speedy recovery

Dan

Assuming Chester's points aren't removed (because it hurts my head to factor that in), here's how the final table might look based on average points and goals so far:

Proj Pos   Current   Team      Proj GD   Proj Pts
1   1   OXFORD UNITED   51   101
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2   2   STEVENAGE BOROUGH   45   93
3   3   YORK CITY      28   89
4   4   LUTON TOWN   21   86
5   5   RUSHDEN & DIAMONDS   34   82
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6   7   KETTERING TOWN   18   78
7   8   AFC WIMBLEDON   37   77
8   6   MANSFIELD TOWN   17   76
9   9   KIDDERMINSTER   15   71
10   11   ALTRINCHAM   17   70
11   10   CRAWLEY TOWN    -5   69
12   15   WREXHAM        5   62
13   12   HISTON       -6   60
14   16   SALISBURY CITY (-10)    -9   58
15   13   TAMWORTH       -6   56
16   14   HAYES AND YEADING UTD   -17   54
17   17   CAMBRIDGE UNITED      5   52
18   21   BARROW      -26   46
19   18   EBBSFLEET UNITED   -32   45
20   20   GATESHEAD (-1)   -21   42
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
21   19   EASTBOURNE BOROUGH   -32   42
22   22   FOREST GREEN ROVERS   -40   39
23   23   GRAYS ATHLETIC   -62   24
24   24   CHESTER CITY (-25)   -31   11

On this basis we'd need the equivalent of 13 wins from our remaining 17 games to make the playoffs on 83 points.

Altrincham FC First Team / Durham City
« on: January 04, 2010, 03:37:16 PM »
Another club with balanced books, lower down the pyramid. Been an interesting season for them when they had to get rid of their entire playing staff after a major sponsor walked out. They brought in college kids instead of getting into debt and shafting all their creditors. They're on zero points but at least they're still going and building for the future. Might be a lesson for others...

Nice article on them here: http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/sport/north-east-non-league-football/2009/12/20/at-least-fans-see-plenty-of-goals-79310-25431130/

Altrincham FC First Team / Mansfield game - CANNOT WAIT!
« on: October 24, 2009, 06:05:06 AM »
Just started my early shift so I can make it out of London in time for today's game. Is it me or can you just not wait for 3pm today? I'm desperate for us to exact revenge for the defeat at Moss Lane and all the nonsense their manager's been spouting since.

Altrincham FC First Team / New broadcaster replacement for Setanta
« on: July 15, 2009, 01:09:46 PM »
Don't think this got picked up on last week. The Conference released this statement on 7th July:

We remain upbeat in our efforts to secure a new broadcast partner. Though realistically no one should need reminding how difficult it is in the financial world at this time, the Football Conference continues to explore all possible avenues through our contacts.

http://www.footballconference.co.uk/news/news_article.asp?id=1302

Sounds a lot less upbeat than their previous statements - though there are still various rumours of ESPN / Eurosport / ITV4 being interested.

Altrincham FC First Team / Setanta is officially dead
« on: June 19, 2009, 06:46:32 PM »
The Premier League's just cancelled Setanta's contract for the coming season and The American tycoon, Len Blavatnik, has pulled out of a deal to save them (see below). I think that's just about it for Setanta and and Conference football on TV next season.

The American tycoon Len Blavatnik has pulled out of its deal to save Setanta

Sources close the deal have said that the deal faltered after Setanta lost the rights to the Premier League games and after it was revealed that Setanta owed HMRC around £50m

This is the statement from Access Industries, run by Len Blavatnik

"On 12th June Access Industries put forward a proposal to the Board of Setanta to acquire a majority interest in the Company. Access believed that this proposal could potenitally have secured the future of the broadcaster for its customers, employees and for football, provided certain conditions required to put the business on a long-term viable footing were met.

Regrettably, despite intensive efforts on all sides over the past few days, and despite significant progress in a number of areas, there remain a number of issues which we have been unable to resolve within the time available. We are disappointed not to have been able to make this deal happen. Access remains committed to sports programming  and will continue to explore opportunities in this area."

Lots of people are saying Cambridge need to hammer us to win the league on Sunday but they don't actually need too many goals. Promotion is decided 1st on points; 2nd goal difference; 3rd goals scored. Obviously Cambridge need to win and Burton need to lose for Cambridge to go up. As Cambridge have scored far fewer goals than Burton they also need to make sure they have a better goal difference.

Burton's goal difference is 30, Cambridge's is 26 so:

If Burton lose by:  Cambridge need to win by:
1 goal4 goals
2 goals3 goals
3 goals2 goals
4 goals1 goal

The middle two aren't too inconceivable. Course, since we're going to win and Burton are going to draw, this is all academic ;)
