I'm quite looking forward to this - new ground for me, a team I know little about (but as they've just been promoted they're clearly not mugs), and hopefully a number of our players who feel they have something to prove after Saturday.
I hope to see Dontai Gabidon given another chance, and also the lad from Chester who wore the 3 shirt in the second half on Saturday.
It's important to get a professional performance under our belts, not least if we end up playing a "Blackpool XI" on Saturday that looks likely to be made up of juniors, program sellers, and the coach driver's nephew.
-
A minor point of interest: Atherton's former Preston North End and St Johnstone defender Clive Smith is Timperley based.
-
I saw them several times last year and they are certainly no mugs! They have enjoyed several promotions in the last few years and have a very settled team. It'll be a good test.

1-0 Atherton Penalty
-
1-1 Toby Mullarkey
-
Sorry, Alty scorer Tom Peers
-
2-1 Alty - Harrop
-
2-2 now

We really do need a proper keeper. Where is Drench? We played well in patches and Max's free kick was sublime. Colls will do well in the Evostik.

Thompson was really poor tonight. If Drench isn't going to be fit fairly soon, we need to bring someone in as a matter of urgency.
-
Was the mixup solely the doing of Thompson, or was Jones culpable too?
I do feel that the latter has lapses in concentration too from time to time you know. I'd feel much more comfortable with Hannigan and Harrison together at the back.

Needed a new keeper two seasons ago.
So frustrating as it is a vital position. 10 plus points are made by a decent keeper.
Hopefully Drench will be fit soon. Should have kept Wynne over Thompson.

Serious concerns as we stumble through pre sesson

A bit too early to be concerned?

It wasn't just the mix-up. He flapped at the ball on three or four occasions.

Tough decisions have to be made in football and he has been given more than enough games/seasons.
Is there any fan who is 90%, nevermind 100% sure he is our best choice?
I can't fault his passion but his kicking is awful, decision making even worst, poor at coming for crosses, struggles to get down for low shots. He is OK at close blocks, which is basically when he throws his whole body at someone shooting 6 yards out.
I feel we always put plasters on Thompson. He has a few OK/stable games in which you expect a keeper at this level to produce and we think all is OK.
I am 100% certain he is not long term and is often protected by a decent defence. The defenders don't trust him, you can see that.
I am being harsh but surely enough is enough. A decent keeper is vital. I have no doubt Stockport's and Chorley's keeper gained both those teams 10 plus points.
Every time it goes back to Thompson most fans hold their breath. Shouldn't be the case at this level.

Spot on. We need to be ruthless and that's the glaringly obvious weakness at the moment.
There must still be decent goalkeepers on the market, and I'd rather we get it right now (I distinctly remember we got Jordan quite late when his Salford situation changed).

TT has stayed on the back end of last season's form which was very good hes possibly on contract
-
A minor point of interest: Atherton's former Preston North End and St Johnstone defender Clive Smith is Timperley based.
Probably also the youngest person called Clive smith in the world

Was it very good or the standard we should expect? A keeper needs a and should be consistent for 90% of games.
Just can't see him improving, he's not got the right physical build for being a keeper.

I believe he went to Wellington Rd.
-
Thompson's form improved dramatically when we signed Drench. It's tailed off again now that he doesn't have a challenger for the jersey in the short term. I honestly believe he gets complacent, and that it affects his game.
-
Thompson was involved in multiple mix ups last night, not just the one. I love PP's loyalty and I believe that's why the players love him so much, but if we are serious about going up, the keeper needs to change. It is harsh and like so many, I've hoped he'll come good but he's a constant liability I'm afraid.

I believe that he is 1 of 6 children & all 6 have a christian name beginning with 'C'.

Do all six have a surname beginning with ‘s’?

When I worked briefly for the Inland Revenue ((1967-8) I dealt with Manchester Education Committee's non-teaching staff. One woman named O'Connor had 5 children. None of their surnames began with O - nor indeed did any of them start with the same letter !

Didn’t quite mean it that way, just that initials would all be CS

I believe so, both have family in the area for sure.

Its a couple of games into pre season friendlies and Mr Needham continues his bitter sad vendetta against a player who was vital in our promotion from obscurity and in our play off run.
Watch the sodding videos from buxton and shaw lane and the end of last season needham you joker....we'd still be in the glue league without him and he deserves a bit more respect as a member of one of only 4 title winning alty teams in the last 50 years.
Don't think anyone has forgotten your ludicrous prediction that thommo would cost us a place in the play off semi against blyth and how I was proved right in my prediction he would make crucial saves to enable our passage....and how meekly and sheepishly you had to apologise and admit you looked a bit of a pratt afterwards.

Numerous mistakes and right back at it in the last friendly.
We'll see.....
As for name calling..... get back under your rock.
As for calling people knobs it is nobs, unless your are referring to them as door knobs.
It is a forum for opinions and I want the best for the team that I support.

Teflon Thompson is a decent Evostick keeper who can do a job in the Conf North but if we’re looking to progress to The Conf National then we need someone more reliable between the sticks.

Steve Drench expected to play against Blackpool.
