My son was asking me last night about any ex Man Utd or Man City players who went onto play for Altrincham FC. In all honesty I was a little stumped and could only name 2. Can anybody add to the list? Perhaps the guidelines should be that they are from the modern era, 1970's onwards and they made at least 1senior appearance for either City or United. The only 2 players I could name are-
Alex Stepney
Jeff Wealands
-
Jack Crompton ?
-
Jason Beckford
Andy Tunnicliffe
Ben Williams
Kirk Hilton
-
Michael Twiss
-
Nigel Gleghorn or was it Cleghorn?
Mark Ward!
-
1969 Frank Carrodus
-
Sam Hewson
Antonio Bryan

Nigel Gleghorn.- currently PE teacher at Trafford College and does some radio commentary for radio Stoke I think.
I forgot about him- Cheers
-
Albert Quixall, Paddy Fagan, Charlie Mitten. pre 70's but worthy of a mention

We really do try :D

Who was the forward who was ex United - only played a couple of games for us in the late 80s - looked a class player but had to stop playing because of a back problem - same reason he had to retire from the full time game. Nicky Wood I think
-
Mark Dempsey
-
Alf Steward Pre-War goalkeeper/manager I believe played for United. Beat that (mid-30s)!

That was, indeed, Nicky Wood.
He played two games (and scored one goal) for us during the 1989/90 season.

Interesting story on Alf Steward if Wikipedia is correct. Claimed to have played in the CSC final against Alty then for Alty in the same tie!!
I'm not too sure he's classed as a modern era player, but interesting nevertheless. Cheers.

Some other individuals who have played for both City and Alty:
Goalkeepers:
Steve Fleet (1960s);
Ron Healey (one North West Floodlit League appearance for the Robins back in 1969).
Defender (allegedly...):
Jason Van Blerk (at Alty, briefly, in 2003);
Midfielders:
Michael Quigley;
Jamie Hoyland (a single appearance as a substitute at Telford United in 1999);
Forwards/Wingers:
Clive Colbridge (a member of the Robins' 1965/66 & 1966/67 Cheshire County League Championship winning sides);
Dennis Fidler (ex-Macc - played for Alty in early 1970s....and had also played for United's FA Youth Cup side in the 1950s);
Bert Lister (former Oldham Athletic and Stockport County striker who played for Alty during the late 1960s).
-
Alty & United:
Scott Moffatt;
Garry Worrall (who I once tried, unsuccessfully, to mark in a game played in Timperley circa 1974!);
Peter Jones;
John Connaughton (followed Alex Stepney at Moss Lane: 1980 to 1982).
-
Jason Van Blerk (at Alty, briefly, in 2003) - crap beyond words.
-
Mark Lynch- made 1 appearance for Man Utd's first team.

Clive Colbridge a left winger - not the most popular player of the time but I rated him
-
Ian Mellor (Spider) played 2 games on loan from City in the early 70's
-
No one mentioned George Switzer?
-
Mike Pollit, still occasional perm keeper now

-
Albert Quixall
Ernie taylor
Tommy Docherty (Manager)
-
Did Sammy Harris ever get on the pitch for City?
-
Roger Palmer
-
manager wise there was the tommy docherty debacle.
-
Going back a long way here but in the early 1920's there was a guy called Lal Hilditch who played for us, then moved to United (making 300 appearances or so) and then went on to become Manager at United. I believe that he is the only player/manager Manchester United have ever had.
I read it a while ago, so details may be a bit sketchy.
-
I always remember Albert Quixall getting sent off while playing for Alty,the story went the ref asked him his name and cause he was famous he replied Donald Duck,which got him sent off.
-
We can add Danny to this list come Saturday!

Once the most expensive player in Britain at £45,000. When United signed him from Sheffield Wednesday, he was an extremely graceful attacking midfield player (or correctly inside forward). Unfortunately he was plagued by back injuries, and subsequently weight problems. He eventually went intp partnership with Freddie Pye in the scrap metal business.

Duncan Watmore ::)

You mean when he comes back to finish his glittering international career in about 2030 of course. I'll be 83 if I haven't fallen off the perch by then..............

Really? You should've mentioned it earlier in the thread ;)
