Out of left field so to speak, that Jon Shaw is still kicking his heels a bit at Mansfield. He's got a few ex-Halifax mates here, what about seeing if he's available? He got bags of experience and still only late 20's. Used to be a good target man AND goalscorer. That's the kind of player I'd like to see playing the holding role up front for us.

The Oxford fans that I travelled back on the trains with on Saturday said that this was their best performance in weeks.
I thought it was a very good game and maybe we deserved a point.

Must say (and I don't say it very often) I didn't think we were 'worth' a point - although I would have been grateful for it.
For me, the difference between the sides was a goal-poaching striker who scores 20+ a year.
This is something which has been discussed on other threads.

If we are going to get any higher in the league we're definitely going need one of these ... but this is the conundrum - how do we afford one?

More probably, can the management team unearth one for us?

It's such a pity that this team hasn't got a 32 year old Colin Little in it - we'd definitely be giving the play-offs a shot next year.

As long as a testimonial match is financially viable.
Quite a few players over the years have had testimonials where the cost of staging them is more than what the player gets.

I think perhaps that's why I didn't get one after playing for the Post Office in the 60's  ;D ;D

I know many will not agree with me here but i believe that a fit welch will get into the team ahead of williams everytime. I think williams has been excellent at times this season but i dont think hes as good as welch, young or smith. I hope we keep hold of welch and he can get a good run next year.

I'd be one of them.

We only signed McAliskey because we needed a physical presence, but Dale was injured. Ergo, when Dale is back, we needn't waste money on McAliskey. His style makes him look lazy, as does his lack of pace. I don't for one minute believe he isn't trying, I just don't think the lad is good enough. I'd wish him all the best in his future career, thank him for being a vaguely useful stop-gap, but send him packing.

Lawton and Danylyk perform the same duty. Good work-rate/stamina, committed, not scared to put their foot in. A central midfield with both of them in looks short on creativity, but I'm not against keeping both in the squad and rotating them. They need a Kearney/Carden to help them out with more incisive passing though.

If, and it's a big if, we were able to replace Colin with a free-scoring forward, and perhaps recruit another midfielder who looks really comfortable on the ball, we'd be playoff material. As it is, we're in the "can give anyone a game on their day" bracket, but lack the consistency to mount a challenge for the top five. Still, that's a hell of a lot better than anything we've been used to in recent years.

Like the man said.*

* Wish I'd have said that!

I thought players had to do ten years service to earn a testimonial.

I think if you score enough for two then it comes down to five.  ;)

Option One, without doubt.... but then everyone else is looking for this and the vast majority will be able to pay more than we can. A bit more of the old GH/KMc magic is called for here!

Could we get anyone decent who played for Chester? anyway probably Steve Daly from Southport

They've all gone - Blundell and Chadwick (strikers) both went to Barrow

I don't often think this nowadays in games like this, but I think we're going to win this one - possibly1-0 (Little pen)

Hope I'm not being a jinx!

Alty boss Heathcote said: "Colin is the main reason we have survived in the Conference. He has been a fantastic servant to this club. His goals tally tells its own tale of the contribution he has made."

I feel that needs highlighting to everyone on the forum.
Thats the gut feel of all the fans I am sure and now we know GH shares that view.  Colin Little IS the main reason why we stayed up in the BSP and Alty FC owes him for that contribution.

I take it you mean some more than others? Most of us were well aware of that  ;)

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Best Signing of the Season?

It was almost a toss-up between Williams and Clee.
Clee is a very exciting player who has blossomed as the season went on - but so did Robbie.

I voted for Williams because we were all worried by the departure of McGregor and the fitness of Welch and were concerned that the stable defence we'd started to get together last season would be absent this time round.

As it turned out with Rob and Greg, we've got the best centre back pairing we've had for many a year and it's enabled us to win points this year we would previously definitely have lost ... so, by a whisker, Rob Williams for me.

PS: if we were voting for revelation of the season, it would have been between Clee and Smith.

Without Colin we'd not have got back in the Conf when we did.

Thanks for all the very happy memories and I hope you have a very successful career at OT. I'm absolutely positive you will. We're all going to miss you.

I'd hate to choose between you and Jackie S ... and that says it all. The word is often overused nowadays, but you are, and always will be, a TRUE legend to all Alty fans.

Looking good for Mr Peake then :(

That IS the main drawback IMO  :(

I think if FGR don't stay up or get a reprieve, they could very well have to do something similar - or at least go into Admin and start next season on -10 points

« on: April 01, 2010, 08:20:20 PM »
Just flipped my AFC calendar over to April, and saw four quality pictures of Jackie Swindells, at an absolutely packed Moss Lane. What a shame we can't draw those sort of crowds now.

I suppose we have the advance of technology (pc games etc) and other media things such as Sky to thank as to why we dont get the crowds we use to when the great Mr Swindells used to grace the turf of ML.

That, and the fact it only cost half a groat to get in  :D My first adult season ticket, for 66/7 season was 4 guineas (i.e. £4.20) for 21 Cheshire League games and 17 or 18 reserve matches in the Manchester League!
That WAS value  ;)

Gloomy memories for me. I was at Ewen Fields to watch us get battered 5-1 in 67.
Other notable sources on here will probably have better memories than me about such things but I think that Hyde team was the one with the midget forawrd line that included Wilford (who later came to us) and our ex-reserve winger the original Johnny 'creepy' Crawley.
