Irrespective of which league we are playing in next season I am hugely concerned by the state of of squad. In fairness GH has touched upon this subject when referring to the number of loanees we have in this year's team and once they are gone we are going to be very thin on the ground.
Taking into account that Darren Tinson is meant to be retiring in the summer the squad would look something like this:
GK Coburn
GK Acton
FB Scott
FB Lane
FB/M Peyton
CB Young
D/M Battersby
D/M Aspinall
M Roca
M Sedgemore
M Lawton
M Owen
F Little
F Senior
F O'Neill
F McFadden
If you now consider the age of some of our players, people like Val Owen and Colin Little, although they look after themselves supremely well, are not getting any younger. Scotty and Aspinall have been here a long time - great servants that they have been, do they still have a future at the club? Don't get me wrong, they have both served the club fantastically well but there comes a time when players aren't quite up to it anymore, especially if we stay in the BSP. It's time to look to the future and I hope we are able to bring in players who can enable us to be competitive and freshen up the side at the same time. I know you can't just click your fingers and expect this to happen but it worries me that we could end up this summer right back where we started a few years ago with a weak squad in a league which is fiercely competitive.
-
When did we sign Michael Owen?
-
I'm 99.999999999999% sure Sedgemore won't be at the club.
Worrying thing is next season will see a lot of new players having to be sourced no matter what league we are in.
-
The youth team has been doing well. Surely a few of them can be promoted to the first team.

As a general point, and not having a go at anyone in particular, should the same (as highlighted above) not also apply to managers?
-
f**k off VofD we get your point but it is now becoming tiresome

I think the gulf between the youth and first teams needs to be bridged by having a reserve team, but I appreciate there were genuine reasons for not having a regular reserve side this season. In order to reap the full benefits of our fantastic youth setup this problem needs to be solved somehow. Easier said than done though!

Bit harsh on VofD i think. Everyone is entitled to an opinion without getting told to f**k off and i agree with his opinion on this one.

I suspect that Greg Young will be far, far too good for BSN too.

WHY??? youve lost me there ................ he has a point and any true alty fan must be looking ahead to the future, wherever we end up, thinking whats going to happen with players coming and going and sorting the squad out. GH in fairness has to rebiuld EVERY season and thats no easy task!!
Ive thought it all season the fact we rely so heavy on loanee's it doesnt bode well for any consistancy in the team to biuld on. It doesnt allow a team to gel and develop. We have always had to deal with these factors and hence why we cant move away from a conference relegation team. We need more stability in the team. Rome wasnt built over night !! ............
-
Rome wasnt built over night !! ............
That's because, according to legend, it was built in one day. No night shifts involved ;D
-
lol GH needs to take a leaf out the romans book then!!
You gotta hand it to him, he spots a player though. Even if we then dont get the full potential out of him or he is used in the wrong position. GH can find a decent player.
Players surplus to requirement for me now are (and this is a non harsh list!! Full credit to each player for their contribution)
Aspinall
Sedge
McFadden
Tinno ( i know he is retiring but past his best now for us - controversial i know, but even the mighty Sir Alex's binned off the best centre half at that time and managed ;D ........... for those puzzled ..... Stam!!)
And possibly Scotty although im not a 100% sure on that one.
Then take into consideration the loanee's lost we really have a depleted squad. GH's got his work cut out again!! And yes VofD, GH will still be their rebuilding much to your disappointment !! Give us a rest on that subject to mate !! ;)
-
Love him or hate him, he is here to stay. GH will not leave alty and even if he does want to, the Board will not let him. Again, love it or hate it, we have to respect and as SUPPORTers, we have to support that decision and GH as a manager. He could do with an assistant with more of a squad picking role, as GH can pick out his players very well, especially with the resources, but often fails to get anything/the best out of that player. If someone else can pick the team based on the players that GH has brought in, we have a winner.
-
Love him or hate him, he is here to stay. GH will not leave alty and even if he does want to, the Board will not let him.
But, surely, if he truly wanted to resign (for whatever reason) and was totally adamant that he was going, he could just walk away regardless of the Board's wishes?
Whenever I have resigned from a job, I haven't had to ask my present employer's permission to leave.
I wasn't aware that managing Alty was a compulsory life sentence!
-
Do you remember after last season when he offered his resignation and Geoff simply said "No"? That's what i meant.

I think that was really looking for a vote of confidence to be honest.

supporting them is a life sentence though !! ;)
I know what you mean but alot of me thinks the times GH has suggested he is willing to walk is purely to make sure he has the backing of the board rather than him actually wanting to go if your with me!!
Its normally at a low time, obviously, when he feels the strain and the strain from the fans, and its more of a boost for him. Why would you say ''right Board, im prepared to go, can i???'' .............. what does that say about GH. For me its like either your committed to the job or asking the board if they want to relieve him of his post he has doubts himself ...........
You read all the time about prem manager etc, saying im not going anywhere, i have a contract, and i want to succeeed. Where as i feel we have a manager who always walks to the board to say im willing to leave if you want me too!! Thats not a good thing is it ..........
-
Whatever you think about GH,he is our manager until the end of the season at least. I know what I want to happen in the summer, but I don't want to say, because between now and the end of the season, it's all about supporting the manager and the team. We have 5 cup finals, in which we need the spirit of 2005.We won't have to rely on others if we win all 5 of our games,as 51pts will surely do it (I know its highly unlikely, but not impossible)
Forget whatever grudges you may hold against GH and lets attempt to stay up.Then we can talk about the managements future.

Totally agree!! ps i think i know what your thinking ............. but you wont say YET!! Its a bit obvious haha! ;)
Whatever happens from now till the last game i think every Alty fan, and even VofD, will and should be right behind GH and the whole squad. We got a chance to survive again and until we know our fate by the final whistle of the last game, if it goes that far, then we can start debating about the future of players and staff.
Personal thoughts and grudges dont me sh*t now ................ its about suvival in this league! A league we are more than capable than competing in !

To be fair Joe, I think the advice given to VoD which I understand to be something along the lines of go forth and multiply is referring to this sentence which made me laugh.
As a general point, and not having a go at anyone in particular, should the same (as highlighted above) not also apply to managers?
So not having a go at anyone in particular but should it not apply to managers as well...we only have one manager...but not particularly them??
I'm not saying you should be shouted down for suggesting if GH has come to a natural end, I mean I really don't know perhaps he has or hasn't whatever and it's a forum for you to say such things if you wish.
But, perhaps just sya that's what you were getting at eh!

We need to stay up this year because regardless of who is the manager next season it will be difficult. Id rather it was difficult in the BSP than BSN.
I think if we end up in BSN it will be hard to get promoted again in a hurry, at least if we can stay up we can plan for a better playing squad due to increased budget from attendance etc. I also think we will be relying on loans more in the future and its clear that even some championship clubs see the BSP as a good level blood their youngsters, I doubt the same could be said for the BSN.
My worry is that in the BSN we just wont be able to get decent players through the door.
Im even more nervous now, wish I hadnt thought about all that.
Bon weekend everyone. Make some noise at Kiddy, get right behind the lads and GH. We need it more than ever!!!

I think we have a Jeckyl & Hyde (United) situation.
VoD is a mild mannered man who was living a perfectly normal life until an accident in his lab released an unidentified form of radiation. At times of football this made the gentleman VoD turn into his evil alter-ego Heathcote.
Alas, VoD resents the existance of this powerful dark side of his personality and is still finding ways to rid himself of this monster........
Hence the posts on here!

Are we due to change the away strip next year too ? anyone know ?

Are we due to change the away strip next year too ? anyone know ?
Yes, we use each strip for two seasons.
-
I think we most definitley
need a reserve set up next year if we are in this division
Val was out for a long time and never had a chance to get match fit and also there
have been players who have been on the bench and been getting 15 mins every saturday.
and might be expected to start a game the following week, and they cant be match fit.
I know finances call the shots with a reserve set up but it would benefit the first team
any one else agree?

2 names mentioned on the main site, Paul Ellander & Liam (brother of Ryan) Shotton may be worth looking at.
-
Paul Ellender stuck by Boston through all their troubles and I think he is based down their too. Ryan Shotton's brother could be worth a look at.

I believe he trained with Alty earlier this year

Which one?
-
shottons brother. He was training here the night the FA cup was at the ground. We thought he was just someone from stoke that Ryan brought along but it turns out he was his brother.
-
I'm sure Ryan would put in a good word!
