Title: Lets pretend for a few minutes that we have to change our name...
Post by: Ukrainian Alty on April 14, 2023, 11:16:54 AM
In reality I don't think that it would ever become an issue for us to worry about because the Club is registered at Companies House as ALTRINCHAM ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED.  We could probably just register the replacement as ALTRINCHAM FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED.

I've gone with something else, as I'd hope we could do as you suggested.

AFC Altrincham

AFC Altrincham

Good choice.  I have added it to the poll and reset the voting.

You mean like ours?

Altrincham FC would be unlikely to get through, but my first choice. AFC Altrincham would be my 2nd

I think that if we ever relocated to the Broadheath area "1891 Altrincham FC" would be a nod to our origin and the re-connection with it.

Altrincham Borough for me. I'm sure Jamie would agree...

Stamford Park posse rather than Rangers too!

Given that Macclesfield Town are now lacking a major club, some pretend millionaires could buy us, relocate us from Moss Lane to Moss Rose (BBC would never notice the difference) and we could become the MT Robins.

It's kind of been done before, so I don't see any problems at all.

After a merger to save both clubs, we arise, phoenix-like, with green and red stripes as 'Altrincorn FC' - nickname: The Linbins.

With Rocky Robin as manager and Ron Corn his assistant, we romp to a Macron Challenge Cup quarter final and a NWC First Division South play-off spot before international TV personality, Terry Christian, buys the club and seals a lucrative deal with Amazon Prime to chart Altrincorn's meteoric rise back to the mid to upper reaches of the Northern Premier League.

That's my guess anyway.

Dynamo Altrincham or perhaps Alternator Altrincham scans better.

For Pete Reid. And Sporting Altrincham of course for John Laidlar with his interest in Lisbon!

Interesting that there is no clear favourite. let's hope it never happens.

By the way, why were Newport and Maidstone allowed to have their old names?

By the way, why were Newport and Maidstone allowed to have their old names?

Accrington Stanley FC were formed in 1891 and went bust in 1962.  A team with a similar name, Accrington Stanley (1968) FC, emerged in, well, 1968 and this was the name they were using when we knocked them out of the FAC 4QR in 1974/75 (the Everton Season).  They quietly lost the '1968' moniker sometime later on.  Anyone else remember the milk advert?

The reasoning behind why some clubs are allowed to retain (or revert back to) the name of a defunct club that they are effectively seeking to clone probably has a lot to do with the circumstances under which the original club managed their decline and left the Football League.

A bit of research on t'interweb  reveals that Accrington Stanley FC resigned from the FL mid-season in 1962 but didn't actually go into liquidation until 1966 and apart from them causing a bit of inconvenience I can see why they would be allowed to enter the Football league using the defunct club's name of Accrington Stanley FC.

Anyway, the milk advert went like this.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pieK7b4KLL4

Both Accrington Stanley and Stoke City are often wrongly credited as being among the 12 founder members of the Football League. The clubs then were simply Accrington and Stoke, both went under in fairly quick time.

And Gary Wright's version of it - and travelling there on the East Lancashire Railway and having a jolly long walk at the end (and a similar story at Whitby)! Tose were the days.

nickname: The Linbins.

'Linbins' just so happens to be an anagram of Blinis which is Ukrainian for Pancakes.  Very nice they are too. Good with Philly and a touch of smoked salmon.

They sell mini blinis in most supermarkets in the chiller.  I might have to pop down to Tesco and get some.  Yes, I,m going now. yum, yum.

And the now defunct Accrington Stanley's leading scorer in their last full season in the Football League was none other than Jack Swindells

Not satisfied with just being plain old 'Town' or 'United' - I see that Welsh club Flint have called themselves Flint Town United.

They were a merger of Flint Town and Flint Athletic - admittedly Flint Athletic didn't do too well out of the merger with regard to the new club's name!

There was also briefly a Chichester City United. I suspect my idea of a Manchester merger with Manchester City United playing in yellow and black hoops at the Commonwealth Games Stadium, nicknamed the Bees, probably won't get off the ground! The only really successful merger in Britain, I think, has been Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Dagenham and Redbridge are back at the level of the old Dagenham - though admittedly the Bury "merger" could be a success!

It should be remembered that Dagenham are a merger of four clubs, the other three being Walthamstow Avenue, Leytonstone, and Ilford. And the latter pair of those had themselves merged.

Indeed we played Leytonstone & Ilford away in a trophy game. As Max Boyce would say, I was there.

Perhaps the most appropriate now given our recent signings would be Altrincham Celts.
