Good god it sounds like a scene out of ID  :(Ben Newton, from Harrow, north London, said his father had been stretchered away after being hit with a dart to the head.

Although it is sad, there really should be some form of behind the scenes "scheduling" for these games, to prevent such meets, I'm 100% sure it happens in world cup draws, why not domestically. Obviously for the later rounds its unavoidable, but in the interests of common safety things could be addressed. I was in central London today this afternoon and the "atmosphere" was obvious.

Alty vs Macc would be worse  ::)

Sounds like it was 'propa nawty'.

On a slightly more humourous note the BBC news read out an email from a Daniel Dyer who said he had to take his daughter home after 20 minutes.  :D

I've always hated Millwall and West Ham. Sub-human element to each club's support, yet whenever you hear them interviewed they seem convinced it was blown out of proportion/it was the other mob's fault/that's what football is all about - drinking, watching the game, having a scrap.

Cockney gits.

I know that some folk on here have been critical of GMP particularly when we played Millwall but I think that tonights scenes just prove that some Police can deal with things and others are 'less capable'

That really, really would not ever have happened in Manchester, in fact in the North of England

If the Met are our primary force then there really is a problem

Fair point! There were however no problems in or around the City of Manchester Stadium last year. The fact that half GMP were at the game probably contributed hugely too. Last night seems to have been planned in advance, you would hope that Police intel might have picked that up?

There will always be large scale trouble at vermin v Millwall games. Outsiders don't understand the hatred between the two clubs. It dates back to the late 19th century when the clubs were mostly supported by rival dockyards. In the early days Millwall were the bigger club. The police don't have enough numbers to stop a 3000 a side fight. They made things worse by closing underground stations and limiting Millwall to 2300 tickets in a stand that holds 7000. I can't believe they seriously thought people wouldn't travel without tickets. All the pitch invasions and problems inside the ground were caused by vermin fans but Millwall will probably get the blame as usual. Before the game it was the Millwall fans who made the first attack (heavily provoked) but the police and vermin were quick to retaliate. It was just a typical game between two clubs who have always and will always hate each other.

Most bitter rivalries date back to some similar industrial/territorial/religious dispute. Southampton vs Portsmouth, Manchester United vs Liverpool, Rangers vs Celtic. We all understand that perfectly well, however we also understand that the kind of behaviour on display last night was absolutely disgraceful. There are loads of people I hate, that doesn't mean I can go round smashing up people's property to get myself some bricks to hurl at them.

What do these people contribute to civilised society? Seriously, if we lined up the scumbags involved and let the firing squad loose on them would anyone be bothered?

You will probably find a lot of them contribute to society. This idea that they are all unemployed alcoholic drug addicts is nonsense. There is something about this game that turns normal people into wild animals.

If they're so unhinged that a particular game turns them into a rampaging hooligan than I question whether they should be on the streets. Clearly they have serious mental problems.

These bastards aren't kids, they are  adults (mostly (from what we saw on TV big fat bastards at that) who know exactly what their up to.  Just because their is rivalry between clubs for however long does NOT justify the crap that happened on and off the pitch last night..

I would ban the two clubs from all cup comps for a few seasons.  No doubt the FA will huff and puff and threaten this that and the other  and eventually will look kindly on West Ham (as per the Tevez affair) and fine them a few grand) which will make no difference at all.

The west ham players didnt help the situation by celebrating the goals, in the style they did,  some of them should know better (over paid idiots).

Personally if it was up to me I would deduct both clubs about 20 points.. (west ham should have been demoted for playing Tevez a couple of years ago) IMO

Its fkn ridiculous if you cant watch a football match without all that crap going on.

Don't be surprised if you get copycat situations in the next couple of weeks..

Pathetic.

I agree with everything else you say, but to be honest I think the players should be able to celebrate however they like on the pitch. With the amount of abuse given to players from the stands without response, I think we can allow a player to leap around a bit without that being used as an excuse for fighting and pitch invasions. I'm the first to give the opposition players stick, but if they score then celebrate in front of me I can't complain. That's football.

Hi Fuertes, Normally I would totally agree with what you say matey, however on this occassion with the nasty atmosphere that was at best tense to say the least. I think they should have toned down the celebrations on this occassion.

I agree that players/officials take lots of stick during games (I am as guilty as the next man for shouting at them etc) ...

I remember when Alty played Bishop Aukland a few years back in a cup game and they were all pissed and looking for aggro and kicked off, (it ended up with the game being suspended for about an hour whilst police horses were diverted from Old Trafford to deal with them. The Alty officials came to the Golf Road end and asked the fans not to taunt them in an attempt to calm the situation. Gladly the Alty fans were sensible enough to heed the request and eventually the game went on (1 -1 and we lost the replay if memories serves) .. I think that sort of attitude from the players last night would have been appropriate.

Agree with all Distance traveller says, but I feel the only way for FA to deal with this is to hit the clubs hard, very hard. Say make them play all home games for the rest of the season behind closed doors or at the away teams ground with no tickets for travelling fans. If this caused these two clubs to fold then so be it. Football will have lost nothing and maybe gained some respect.
I wonder did the local Tesco close?

This was one of the main reasons why the violence outside the ground was so bad. If Millwall had been given more tickets the fans would have been inside the stadium where it would have been easier to control them instead of roaming around outside. Football is public entertainment, you can't tell a section of the public they are not allowed to go to the most important game for years.

"Give us tickets or we'll go round smashing up the local area". Not having that.

I'm sure Celtic would love to take 25,000 to Ibrox. However, they can't, and they don't travel in large numbers only to trash the local area and fight with the 'Oranges'.

I f**king hate these Cockney pricks. "Oi fackin' lav gettin nawwty". They should get back into their holes.

Celtic play Rangers at least four times a season. Millwall play west ham once or twice in a generation. The away end holds 7000 but Millwall were given 2300 tickets and they had to make a formal complaint to get them, they were originally only offered 1500. If a premier league club can't handle a large away support they should not be allowed to hold a licence.

I've just heard a West Ham fan on the radio. He had it spot on - no away fans permitted for this fixture, whether at Upton Park or the Den.

I'm not 100% sure about this but i think under the league cup rules away fans must be allocated 15% of the tickets (that might be the FA Cup)

If these two clubs folded, the scum elements of both lots of support would simply tag on to someone else. Full scale riot at Dagenham v Grays anyone ?

I'm pretty sure that Man City and either Millwall or Birmingham came to an agreement where neither side requested or accepted any tickets for the respective away game.

Given that there are TV Cameras at virtually every game played professionally could they not beam the game back to the away teams ground and show it on a Huge Screen

The problem is most of them are probably not West Ham or Millwall fans but general riff raff who want an excuse for a fight.

Outrageous statement. Nothing to do with several thousand like minded prunes wanting to be in the same place at the same time? Tickets or not they would have been outside the ground not in it for the exact reason of being able to cause more trouble than if they were inside the ground.

Christ, I don't think the GMP are the best police force in the world but there were 250,000 of the piss ridden 3rd world tramps that night!

The last time they came over the segregation in those numbers they got as far as Derby before the sh*thouses bottled it and turned back when they actually could have got to Green Street and run Londoners all over the place.

It disappoints me that there are plenty of films and books which are top sellers about being football hooligans etc, to continue to glorify such exploits makes it socially acceptable

Then of course there was Leeds vs Millwall, also from last year. This sort of thing can and does happen anywhere.
