« on: October 08, 2008, 10:39:22 PM »

1. Who is our all time leading goal scorer in the non league top flight. i.e. goals from the 1st season of the Alliance Premier League 1979-80 through to today (league goals only)?

2. Who are the top 10?

Ballers,

Why do you torment me with such questions as these just as I should be heading off to get some sleep?!

OK then, on the basis that your definition of "non league top flight" means the Alliance Premier League/Gola League/GMVC/Nationwide Conference/Blue Square Premier only (i.e. not counting the seasons in the Unibond League and the Conference North), here is my list of the top Alty goalscorers (league goals only):

1. Graham Bennett: 62.

2. Ronnie Ellis: 59.

3. Colin Little: 56 (and still going....).

4. Jeff Johnson: 47.

5. John Rogers: 46.

6 (equal). Graham Heathcote and Stuart Terry: 44 each.

7. Ken McKenna: 41.

8. Barry Howard: 40.

9. Gary Anderson: 36.

10. (equal). John Davison and Barry Whitbread: 34 each.

Just missing out:

Nigel Shaw: 30.

John Timmons: 28.

Andy Green: 27.

Niell Hardy: 24.

I'm sure that Flynny will correct any errors/omissions there!

I simply cannot believe that the legendary Tunna doesn't feature in that particular hall of fame....

That's a really surprising list I have to say.

I would never have had Benno down as being our top scorer above JR and Johnson.

It's incredible to think that Davison - Heathcote - Johnson - Rogers - Whitbread - Howard scored nearly 250 goals between them in the APL when most of their careers were played out in the NPL.  And that's not counting the 1 goal Stan Allan chipped in at Bath!

If Colin continues his goal every other game strike rate, what price him going top of this league table by scoring against Vics?

Well, quite. What a ball ache of a question that was that I set! I assumed that anyone who has scored a decent amount of goals or at least made enough appearances to get a few would be on the legends bit of the web site. I now realise taht, disgracefuly, Ronnie Ellis and Gary Anderson aren't there, which lead me to an hour or so last night having to check through old programmes.

In the absence of a definitive list i had to search through them, a lot of the last home and away games of the season weren't there so for a few players I had to tot up approximate totals. i.e. Ronnie Ellis 55+ Gary Anderson 32+. Ballers John Timmons 26+, Paul Reid and Gary Stewart 15+ but apart form that your list is I think correct.

Benno was my hero, he actually got quite a few in September-October of the 1985-86 season which seemed to go unnoticed. His legends profile on the web site is absolutely bang on the money though.
