Title: Up and Down
Post by: HashtagAlty on April 19, 2023, 11:31:07 AM
CONFERENCE PREM

RELEGATION

With YTFC relegated, it's now between the following for the final spot, the money was on Torquay with their 5/5 wins, but a heavy defeat to Chesterfield and Wrexham final day makes it interesting last 2.

Aldershot (York Alty) 51
York 49 (Aldershot Notts County)
Maidenhead 49 (Barnet Gateshead)

---------------------------------------
Torquay (Alty and Wrexham) 46

PLAYOFFS

Boreham Wood   +15   69 (Wrexham Gateshead Yeovil)
Bromley   +13   67 (Chesterfield Oldham)
---------------------------------------
Eastleigh   -1   65 (Solihull Halifax)
Southend United +9   63 (SC**thorpe Wealdstone)

Looks pretty much done for Southend 4 point swing in 2 games, but a win on Saturday for Eastleigh, and Bromley falling to beat Chesterfield would see them only in on GD with a draw and outside by a point.

CONFERENCE NORTH

King's Lynn Town  +37 87 (Leamington and Curzon)
AFC Fylde   +28   86 (Darlington, Curzon, BPA)

On Paper it should be AFC Fylde's title, but with Darlington and Curzon both looking to sneak into POs, it's anyone guess.

PLAY-OFFS

Scarborough      +5    66 ( Telford Banbury)
Alfreton Town   +12   65 ( Blyth Bradford Brackley)
Gloucester City   +7   65 ( Farsley Chorley)
----------------------------------
Darlington      +9   64 ( KL Peterbor')
Curzon Ashton   +7   64  (Boston Fylde KL)
Buxton      +3   64 (Brackley Chester)
Chorley          +12   63 (P'Boro Gloucester)
Kidderminster   +2   63 (Southport Kettering)
Spennymoor      -1   62 (Banbury Farsley)

The maddest PO race I've seen - Buxton have won every game for about 2 months it seems, but Brackley and Chester is a tough double header. Curzon have plowed through, but Fylde and KL could be too much). Gloucester Chorley could be a straight shoot-out.

York and Aldershot play each other on Saturday. Given their superior goal difference a point apiece is all they both need to stay up and put Torquay down.

Just saying...

I think you're assuming we beat Torquay as York are only three points ahead of them atm.
I hope you're right! 😉

We need Torquay down for no other reason than its a pain in the arse to get to. Ditto Yeovil.

What about poor old Harold?
Last year he lost Weymouth, now it's Yeovil and, probably, Torquay.
What will be his nearest game now?!

I think it's probably Eastleigh isn't it?

Just noticed one of our old adversaries, Stalybridge Celtic, have been relegated to step four from the NPL premier. Don't know how I feel about that (or if I care actually) but a bit sad I think. More sad that Nantwich may be joining them. Even sadder that M*cc are replacing them.

In all seriousness, I remember Western League Keynsham Town (near Bristol) complaining that it took them longer to get to a league match at Mousehole than it would take them to travel to Manchester! Still a few tweaks needed at step five by the big cheeses, methinks.

If Nantwich are to survive after drawing 2-2 at Marske this evening, they have to beat Radcliffe at home on Saturday AND have Atherton Collieries lose at Stalybridge. I'm afraid it doesn't look good for the Dabbers.

It will be interesting to see what Dan Cockerline does if Nantwich go down.. is he still at Uni.

Some good and bad memories of Bower Fold; the miss from Danny McGoonah that confirmed (in my head) that we were going down, putting five or six past their keeper who visibly got worse and worse as the  game went in; and watching a boxing day (or NYD) game when Celtic played Southport in bitterly cold freezing conditions. It was 0 0 when the lights failed on 85 minutes and the game was abandoned.

I miss the pub on the platform too.

I can't see them back at this level for many many years.

I went to Staybridge one Saturday in the 90's when Alty didn't have a game. Masses of Glasgow Celtic fans turned up hoping to support a fellow Celtic, they were mortified to find Staybridge wearing blue, the language was industrial to say the least. Most went in the bar to drown their sorrows (get leathered  8)).

A really good day in the end.
