In that case, why are Southport sitting third with almost half the season gone?

There's a lot more luck in Football than anyone would like to admit, take 24 teams and the odds are in favour one of them is going to dramatically over/under perform (Histon a few years ago, or Newcastle up in the Premiership right now). If they can hold it together and then do it again next season, then we can honestly say it's not luck, you can be part time and compete properly.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Gannon appointed Stockport football director
« on: November 14, 2011, 11:51:04 PM »
Stockport County are pleased to announce that Hatters legend James Gannon has been offered, and accepted, the position of Director of Football at the club.
James will be responsible for all football matters including 1st team selection and transfers, he will be assisted by Willie McStay.
Chairman Lord Peter Snape stated he had also invited John Fitzpatrick and at least one of his colleagues from the 'Your Town Your Team' group to join the Board of Directors.
Lord Peter Snape said tonight "I welcome the re-appointment of the most successful manager in the clubs recent history, and look forward to working with James and our new colleagues on the Board"

Wait, why not just appoint him manager?

4-3, this is either an amazingly exciting game or an awful show of defence.

Only me who's hoping for Durham? FCUM would be fun, but I've been to the pubs in Manchester more than enough. ;D

Last season we were a team going to places and keeping eight or nine men behind the ball at all times. Tonight we played against a team that in the second half deployed that very same tactic. This transition from being a side looking to clear the ball at every opportunity, to a side that has to break down defensive teams, cannot be one that we as fans should expect to happen overnight.

However, I do agree that we need to figure this out sooner rather than later; because at the moment we are stooping to the quite frankly awful levels of our opposition. Whilst I agree that tonight's performance was nowhere near what we have come to expect after a promising pre season, perhaps we should take a step back and consider that although we are one of the favourites in this league, it is in fact only the second game of the season.

Very much agreed, they came with the game plan to just be defensive and not let us play, and they were disciplined and organised and it worked. If we can't figure out how to combat this tactic we're absolutely screwed, the team let Workington stifle the talent gap.

I'm gonna go with 5-4, only because I've gone into enough matches last season hoping for a tight 1-0 to last me a lifetime.

Surely that money would be better spent on a phoenix club? I mean at this point why bother with the life support, why not just cut their losses and start anew?

The fact that he hasn't lost any weight proves his attitude.

Defend him all you like, the guys takin the piss out of all of you.

If he plays well he can take the piss out of me all he likes, its the quality of the performance that matters and if he can pull it off whilst hugely overweight (which the reports seem to indicate he can) why should we care?

« on: July 11, 2011, 07:58:48 PM »
Agree with Ballers.

Taking last season's average attendance of 1000 (near as makes no difference anyway), dropping prices to £10 means you'd need have to increase attendance by nearly 15% to make the same. And while I can see them going to the snack bar, more often than not these extra people aren't the sort who are going to arrive two hours early to go the bar, or be collecting programmes (how many will be parents with kids, who are paying very little, those prices I can only really imagine are to hook future fans and whoever's bring them, I can't see the club makes much significantly off them).

Regardless of whether notice was given or if trams were working by 3pm it is a total disgrace.

If they're giving notice it presumably means work has to be done. It's inconvenient but if work's gotta be done how else could they do it?

The bit about not playing any home friendlies is a touch bizarre, unless they're having some sort of work done on their pitch?

Surely clubs need every bit of income they can get during the summer months?

Maybe they expect to get so few at a friendly they won't even recoup costs.
