A conversation yesterday about the number of ex-league teams in our league made me think - how many of the teams who were in the league in 1987 (?) when automatic promotion was introduced have lost their place and who has replaced them?
In no particular order I think 15 have lost their place:
Wrexham, Southend, Notts county, Chesterfield, Torquay, Aldershot, Halifax, Grimsby, Stockport, Chester, Darlington, Hereford, York, Maidstone and Bury
But I can only think of 14 replacements:
Wycombe, Burton, Crawley, Stevenage, Morecambe, AFC Wimbledon, Accrington Stanley, Harrogate, Sutton, Fleetwood, Salford, Cheltenham, Barrow and FGR
Who am I missing or have I got an extra one in the first list?

Didn’t Lincoln come down and then go back up so don’t appear on either list. Scarborough did the opposite- went up and then came back down with a bang
-
Maidstone Utd didn't enter the football league till 1989.
-
I think Newport were a league team in 87 and the new incarnation are a league team now so you could add Newport to both lists if you are being picky

Thank you!

It's interesting that half of that second list is now in League One, with FGR and Sutton in a good position to join them next season.

The other thing I noticed in thinking about this is that I suspect more teams have bounced down and back up than went up and fell back. Not done the full lists for those but but feel is quite a marked difference?
-
Mansfield came down and went back eventually. Tranmere are in that group too
-
Don't forget M*cc.!
They went up, down, up, down and POP! 😉
-
Bounced back up:
Lincoln, Colchester, Mansfield, Exeter, Oxford, Bristol rovers, tranmere, Hartlepool, Newport (sort off) Luton, Carlisle, Leyton orient, cambridge

Also Shrewsbury and Doncaster

Bounced back up: also Doncaster, Shrewsbury (and Lincoln have done it twice)
Fell back down: Scarborough, Maidstone, Barnet (3 times!), Macc (twice), Kiddy, Rushden & Diamonds, Boston, Yeovil, Dagenham

Yep Shrewsbury went back up the following season
-
So 15 bounced back up and 9 fell back down. Not sure what that tells us but I am relieved my first impression was right

On reflection it makes us seem quite boring

On reflection it makes us seem quite boring
You mean us the club for never managing it or us the contributors to this thread for having nothing else to do?

Think you could make a case for either (or both!) 😂😂

I meant the club in managing to avoid boom and bust. Hopefully having a long term plan which includes going full time will put us on a sound platform when we do make a push for promotion
