For those of you who knew him, John Murray (our dad) passed away at 6.55am today, having suffered for the past 2 years with an aggressive form of dementia.
Dad followed Alty for the last 40 years and, even with his health problems over the last year or so, continued to be a regular at home and away games.
He will be sadly missed by many - let's hope Alty win at Kiddy today for dad!!!!!

Sincere condolances to you and your family. RIP John

Stood with John at a few games over the years, a lovely fella. our thoughts go to John and his family.

RIP John,A great man.

That is very sad news. May I add my condolences to those already posted.
My first memory of John was at the FA Cup 1st Round tie at Halifax in 1975. The Shay was oval shaped then & we were stood on a very rickety terrace at the end of the ground where away fans are still housed.I seem to remember John giving Micky Moore quite a bit of stick.
As well as being a great fan, John did a lot of work for many years ensuring that the Football Club accounts were in order.
God Bless You John.

Sad news, my thoughts are with all of the Murray family at this time.
As Pete says, another one of the people I looked up to when growing up as an Alty fan passes on. John was always at the game, where ever it was.
And if there was a rule or regulation he didn't agree he certainly let people know!
Many people don't know that he used to spend hours on end doing the technical side of the accounts in the offices at Alty as well, I've often seen him shaking his head at some of the "accounting" during Mr Bermans time.
RIP John, you'll be missed by many.

RIP John. Very sad news indeed.

My sincere condolences to John's family. Didn't know him that well, but a genuine fan and a genuine man.

Again, coming from a similar angle as Ecky, Hughesy and Joe, John Murray was a good bloke who I grew up kind of knowing and had the odd chat with over many years at Alty games. I perhaps think of him at a rather dismal away game at Kettering advising Gerry Quinn that in a team with zero attacking capabilities that our one creative player Clive Freeman really ought not to be sta on the bench.
When we talk about Alty being a family I think of the people like John who I've grown to share experiences with over the years, this includes Mark and Alan who were fans we sort of looked up to when starting out at Alty and to whom I extend my deepest sympathies.
And as Ecky says earlier, a man who has done his bit over the years to ensure the club we love has continued to evolve. Sadly, he now joins the rather too quickly expanding heaven branch of Alty supporters and we wish the Murray clan well.
RIP John. Good man.

A sad loss of yet another Alty stalwart.
My condolences to Paul, Mark and the rest of the Murray family.
I seem to recollect him writing a few trenchant letters about the Berman regime at Moss Lane to the local press in his time!
I related a story about John in my programme article for the AFC Wimbledon match only last Saturday, too.

Very sad news indeed. I flew home 2 weeks ago on a very quick visit, and got to the Histon game. I remember thinking it strange that I didn't spot John in the crowd, as I've always noticed him stood behind the goal for as long as I can remember (going back to the 1979/80 season.)
My thoughts are with the Murray family.
-
Only really knew him as a regular fixture behind the goal, but did speak with him on a couple of occasions. He seemed like a very decent, genuine man and my sincere condolences go to the rest of the family.
-

Sincere condolences to Paul, Mark, Alan and all the family. I can hear him extolling the team to 'rough em up Alty' whilst writing this. RIP John.
-
So sad to hear this news, John just seemed to be one of those men who has always been there, all the time I have been going to Moss lane. Our sympathy goes to all the family.

This is very sad news and my deepest condolences go to all the Murray family. John was an absolute gentleman-kind and generous and Alty through and through. It was a privilege to have known him.

Thanks for all the comments.
I spoke to Lisa this morning and she was very comforted by them all....she was very touched that Dad was remembered with such respect....she's going to print them all off and keep them.
A lot of my memories of dad unsurprisingly involve watching alty with him.....his mad dashes back from Hemel Hempstead to catch a midweek match while we kids sat anxiously at home watching the clock (he always made it in time), his striding up indignantly to a clutch of 6 ft scarboro (in fairness probably leeds) skinheads and telling them to "GET BACK!".
But probably my favourite memory was of the first trophy final....his first thought was to invite Big Bill and Brian Sweeney and we kids were allowed to bring a friend each to the match...then he set about finding a car big enough and thus we all set off in a white Ford granada estate...think there were 9 of us in it......Dad was famous for his 'plastic money' in those days and we had no sooner sat down than we scored....Dad jumped up and all his credit cards flew out of his pocket showering the people in front....he'd no sooner collected them all up than we scored again causing another shower of american express, diners club, barclaycards etc..........
