Kevin Ellison
-
Clive Walker in his Woking days
-
Paul Ellender .... Absol immense player.
For personality and commitment .. .Mark Maddox
The most powerful shot I have seen from an Alty player (and pace) Danny Mcgoona .... nah only kidding... Kevin Ellison.
-
Ricky Harris amazing talent but for fitness insues would have gone much further and Stuart Coburn a little luck with the right scout watching, who knows.
-
Surely it has to be stan collymore!!!!
-
ian wright?
altywise for me it will always be jeff johnson
-
Brian Douglas and Ronnie Clayton at Great Harwood in the late 60's/ early 70's
-
In terms of future achievement............Stuart Pearce will take some beating
-
Maybe Les Ferdinand ? I am pretty sure he was non league somewhere and has been a PFA player of the year ??, I'll check .... Then prob get my coat when wrong...
YAY I was reet ... Ferdinand started his career in non-league football, first at AEL (a KOPA Cypriot team in England) then to Southall then moving to Hayes. He was spotted by Queens Park Rangers and moved there for £30,000.
Also he is a sir ... so thats not too bad for an ex non league player comin' good ?
-
Big Jack.. 87 goals.. no contest
Runner up JK the most intelligent player we ever had... despite his hard man reputation John worked it all out, understodd how to win and always had a plan.
-
Frank Carrodus :)
Think it is, Heyes Albion, ALTY, City,Villa,Birmingham,Wrexham and Bury.
What a brilliant winger.
-
Thinking of non alty players..
Graham Roberts (Weymouth, Spurs, England)
Great centre back. Nice bloke also.
I agree that Stu Pearce is up there also.
-
Obviously Jack Swindells, a man for whom the word "legend" was invented. John Owens was to my mind the best player in non-league never to play league football. He could have walked into many league back fours of his day, and he, Jack, and Jeff Johnson are the first three names on my all time Alty greats team.
Among players who didn't wear the red and white, I'd nominate Stuart Pearce, Cyrille Regis who started at Hayes, Paul Mariner (Chorley), and going back over 50 years Warren Bradley. For those who don't remember him, Warren was a schoolteacher (like John Owens) who played for Bishop Auckland when they were amateurs, and also won 11 amateur caps for England. After the Munich disaster he signed for United on emergency papers, and featured on the right wing for them. He made 62 appearances and scored 20 goals, and then went on to win 3 full England caps. So good that I can just about forgive him for playing for Macc and Vics at the end of his illustrious career !

Can anyone name the champions league winner that started in non league football? Might be the only one

Garry Birtles of Notts Forest - signed from Long Eaton United.

Steve Finnan
-
Are we allowed European Cup winners? (i.e. pre Champions league)
Gary Birtles? (Forest)
-
Birtles was signed by Nottingham Forest from non-league Long Eaton United[1] for £2,000.
2 European Cups 1979 & 1980
-
eh up Phil, great minds think alike!
-
Jeff Johnson for me, but JK and John Owens also right up there
-
Steve finnan correct!! Birtles is a great shout for the European cup but there must be more than one in the old format?
-
A second for Clive Walker - he was a class above at this level.

Steve Finnan, started with Welling (played against Alty as well) and won it with Liverpool.
-
Would Alex stepney apply to this?

Git, I wanted to say Bowler!

Jackie Swindells by a million miles.
Frank Carrodus didnt make his name as a Non-League player. He was well known locally as he was the star player in a very good Hayes Albion side that played in the Altrincham Sunday League, at the same time he played on Saturdays for Blackpool's 'A' team, I assume as a non contract player. I remember training with Frank at Hayes Albion although he was a few years older than me. A great winger and a really down to earth and nice bloke.

Leo skeete...

Leo skeete...
You're skeeting on thin ice with that one...
I'll get me coat!
-
Paul Showler. What a winger.
Or you could also go for Kenny Mckenna. Brilliant for both us and Telford, Also a good player in the Welsh league.
-
There are a few ex Grays players doing quite well for themselves in the league at the moment. Gary Hooper at Celtic, Michael Kightly at Wolves,Aaron McLean at Hull and George Boyd are a few i can think of.
-
Hooper scored at moss lane as a kid in that trophy game in 05', looks class at Celtic now. Clayton Donaldson always looked a class apart for this level.
-
Never forget donaldsons 1st minute goal at alty we had just changing ends after kick off next thing he's celebrating next to the corner flag right in front of me, made me laugh a few said right that's it let's go

I don't think that was Clayton Donaldson Jacko!
-
Graham Barrow....was a standout in the great Alty teams of 79 - 80 and was always going to play league.
-
John King :)

My Wolves supporting flat mate loves him, but reckons that he has played his last game for Wolves because of his injuries, hence his lack of appearances since they got promoted.
Gary Taylor-Fletcher at Blackpool. Remember him being at vics at the turn of the century (blimey that makes me feel old). Can't remember if he ever played against us for them however...
