Phil,

The rule at Alty is that you are given 15 minutes and then the pop side make a decicison that sticks.

Unless you are a winger.  If you impress in your first game you should start every other until you leave  :)

Fair enough, I'll expect a text from Hughesy at 3.15pm then!!

Ben Wilkinson is absolutely dreadful, one of the most pathetic excuses for a player I have ever seen in a City shirt, and believe me I've seen plenty of them in what is the worst team in our history - and he can't even get into the squad!

He is not good enough to play for Altrincham, I will tell you that now.

His mincing around the field might provide you with entertainment though now that you're safe - sometimes it's good to have a joke player on the field just to brighten things up.

Talk about pissing all over my Football Manager optimism!

QUESTION FOR THE OTHER OLDIES .....

Remember Derek Houghton, the full back we signed from Wigan in the late 60's (ish), didn't we also sign his twin brother a little later on? Or am I just rambling. I think they were twins too weren't they?

I do remember the Jackson brothers, one of them gave me a lift back from the ground at Great Harwood when the game was called off in the cup one time.

Saughall Robin,

Trawling through the archives, I have traced a left full-back called Stuart Houghton, who played for Alty during the 1969/70 season.
He joined the Robins from Runcorn and was a former Wigan Athletic player.
I've not yet managed to confirm that he was Derek Houghton's brother though.

Is that the one you were thinking of?

The Houghton I recall was 6' tall at least, going bald and could put a free kick into the opposition box from just outside our 18 yard box. He never played as well for us as he did against us!

Last year, I was working on the compilation of a potential article for the Robins Review in my Alty Theme Teams series consisting of an Alty Players With Famous Relatives XI.

Anyhow, the final selection was as follows:

1. TOMMY CAVANAGH

(son of Tommy Cavanagh, Tommy Docherty's assistant manager at Manchester United in the 1970s)

2. ASHLEY NEAL
(son of former Liverpool full back Phil Neal)

3. DANNY DONACHIE
(son of former Manchester City full back Willie Donachie)

4. DANNY CRERAND

(son of former Manchester United midfielder Pat Crerand)

5. ANDY REID

(brother of former Manchester City player Nicky Reid)

6. JOHN McMAHON
(brother of former Liverpool midfielder Steve McMahon)

7. RAY WALLACE
(brother of former Southampton & Manchester United winger Danny Wallace)

8. PAUL HIGGINBOTHAM

(brother of current Stoke City left full back Danny Higginbotham)

9. DARREN ROYLE
(son of former Everton striker & manager Joe Royle)

10. GARY STEWART
(brother of former Manchester City & Tottenham Hotspur player Paul Stewart)

11. MICK FAGAN
(son of former Liverpool manager Joe Fagan).

Subs:

12. BEN HATTON
(son of former Liverpool councillor Derek Hatton)

13. SIMON KENDALL

(son of former Everton midfielder & manager Howard Kendall)

14. GRAHAM CARR

(father of Channel 4 comedian Alan Carr)

15. NEIL RYAN
(son of former Manchester United winger & reserve team manager Jimmy Ryan)

16. JASON BECKFORD

(brother of former Manchester City, Port Vale & Norwich player Darren Beckford)

Apparently they are backing their brother Michael in some sell out concerts at the O2 Arena!

Son of Howard so a good pedigree...

Is this a bad time to mention the sons of Joe Royle and Howard Kendal?    :D

Who was Howard Kendall's son?

Let's hope Ben is more like, er Joe Fagan's son?

PRetty sure he's called Simon Kendal. I think he played for us very briefly in the mid-90's?

Alty1981,

Impressive recall skills, young man!

Simon Kendall was an unused substitute on two occasions: Kettering (Home) and Telford United (Away) at the start of the 1995/96 season.

Phil,

This conjures up some intriguing visions for tomorrow's game.

So, is his "mincing" in the style of John Inman as Mr Humphries in Are You Being Served? or does he adopt the Duncan Norvelle tactic of getting the ball and then taunting the opposition players to "Chase me"...?

Busy day today Cult!

Yes, that's the one. And "JS No1 fan" is correct, he was always better for Wigan than for us.

They both played for Wigan during our back-to-back championships.

I've obviously got the christian names mixed up!

Sorry to get this back on topic ( ;D) but...

Is't Ben Wilkinson the guy that so lovingly put Anthony Danylyk out for a few weeks with a rather nasty tackle...?

He got a full minute or so after coming on in the 6th minute of injury time, so it's a tad early to make a judgement on him!
