One of the greatest sportsmen ever . For those of us who remember him at his best it was a sheer honour and privilage . Those images of him at the 1970 World Cup in particular will live in our memories forever .
 R.I.P.  The great PELE .

It's difficult to compare players from different eras, but Pele was quite probably the best footballer of all time, as well as being a thoroughly decent human being.

I never saw him play live, but I was surprised to learn he took an interest at our level, attending the FA Trophy final between Woking and Dagenham and Redbridge in 1997 as a guest of honour, where somebody I know met him.

Like Ali, Pele was one of the rare sportsmen who transcended national boundaries: a hero for all nations.

R.I.P a true great

I may be privileged to have been the only one on here who. WAS lucky enough to see Pele play live. It was a friendly between Aston Villa and Santos in February 1972. It was all exhibition stuff, and he got plenty of opportunity to display his ball skills. Villa won 2-1 (they were in Division 3 at the time !) and I stood on the Holte End in a crowd of over 50,000.

A true gentleman as well as an incredible footballer. Thanks for the memory and RIP.

He visited our little corner of the world too. The Brazil squad in 1966 stayed in the Lymm Hote and I believe, at least I was told so by Mr. Coleman, that they also trained a few times at Altrincham Boys Grammar School.
