Turn up the heat Robins told
9:10am Tuesday 23rd December 2008

GRAHAM HEATHCOTE has challenged his Altrincham players to turn up the heat on Northwich Victoria's new-look line-up ahead of their eagerly-awaited Boxing Day showdown at the Victoria Stadium.

Colchester-born former Ebbsfleet midfielder Liam Coleman is the latest to head for the north-west and pitch up in Wincham, and Heathcote said:”They've signed five or six from down south, so let's see if we can't say to them: "Welcome to a northern derby - this is what it's all about."'

Northwich stayed rooted to the foot of the Blue Square Conference with a 2-1 defeat at Rushden and Diamonds on Saturday, but Heathcote isn't fooled by their current perilous position.

“The reports I received suggested they could have won,” said the Alty manager. “They have changed a lot of players around and are clearly playing some decent football, so we need to reproduce our first-half showing at Barrow and much of what we did on Saturday.

“They face us twice and Salisbury, and in their position, they'll be thinking they need at least seven points from those three games. It could be an open, attacking affair on Boxing Day, but we've got to make sure we don't go there in must-not-lose mode. We're at our best when we are focused on winning the game, and that has to be the approach.”

Burton boss Nigel Clough admitted his table-toppers had been given ‘one of our toughest tests of the season' at Moss Lane on Saturday, but Heathcote still had mixed feelings about Alty's 3-1 defeat.

“We played to a decent standard, but the annoying part was that, after working all week on being compact, certain players were anything but for the penalty we conceded,” he said. “We had just got back on level terms, so that really cost us.

“Burton had very few chances but showed they are a quality side by sticking them away. The job ahead of us is to make sure we stay as resilient as we've been up to now and aim to pick off teams one by one. That's the task I've set the players for the second half of the season.”

And can Vics also turn up the heat - to make sure the burgers are cooked properly!

And indeed they cook enough instead of having a queue that takes about 20 minutes to get to the end of.
