79-80 - THE team.

JTH,

Your memories of the 1979/80 season would be most welcome for possible inclusion in my programme articles this season.

Both great teams in their own times. I thought the top was one a season earlier though.

Perahps 79-80 edge it as it was did not rely quite so much on one particular No. 10. George Smith was a great goalie.
Little les Campbell (Alty's Billy Bremner)
70-80 was a team like a family, everyone scored goals (except Mr Stepney)
Also 79-80 had so much more facial hair! Tony Sanders quite probably the best Non-league Manager of all time. Why? because he could successfully work out how to get results season in season out in the Cup against some great footballing teams, and having formed a plan he got the players to execute with style. Going away to old 3rd div sides and finding alty unbackable in the home team's local bookies says it all. (e.g Rotherham 2-0 Win).
God bless Mucky Brick and Ivan Crossley sadly no longer with us. RIP Lads

1966/67 Cheshire League Champions.

I think that the line-up is as follows:

Back Row, left to right:

Freddie Stewart; Jimmy Brown; George Smith; Derek Halliwell; David Jackson (?): Neil Dewar.

Front Row, left to right:

Frank Twist; Roy Wilford; Jackie Swindells; Les Campbell; Johnny Worth; Tommy Heron.

Think it might have been his twin brother Peter? (but I could be mistaken)
He gave me a lift back from Great Harwood when the saturday fixture was postponed.
