(Just to try and take your mind off tomorrow's possible permutations for a few minutes or so....).
Name a Spanish team who have played a match against Altrincham FC.
-
I cant remember the name but I recall we played and I think won 1-0 in a game in Spain or on one of the Spanish Islands, as part of the end of season treat for winning either the FA Trophy or the APL. I remember because at the time Martin Walsh, the brother of an Alty director at the time was at the game and promised me a programme - which I never got.
-
Can't recall any Spanish Team
I do however recall us playing a Scandinavian Team (Swedish I think) at Moss Lane - Anyone else recall their name?
-
Damn, I have something niggling at the back of my mind, but can't quite recall...do remember a Japanese side and many Scottish ones

Djurgardens......from Stockholm.
11 Swedish League titles.....finished 10th last year.
I think they won 2-0 & the game was played prior to the start of their season (Feb/March??).
They were good!

Spot on Mr Flynn although I expected nothing less from you to be fair

The match in question took place after the conclusion of the 1979/80 APL season.
The answer will be revealed in today's issue of the Robins Review....!
-
Didn't we also play a scandinavian team called Ilnest in a mid-season friendly in the 90's?
-
slightly off topic as Alty weren't playing but I'm sure I recall some kind of international tournament at Moss Lane, possibly featuring youth teams. Man U, Sparta Rotterdam and six others I think involved, over two days. Probably late 70's, possibly pre APL as I recall lying on the grass banking at the Chequers End.

SW,
I recollect that tournament, too.
Definitely towards the end of the 1970s.
I'd have to delve deep into the archives to track down the actual year.
I think that Celtic were also one of the participants...?
-
I remember that tournament and I thought it was the Youth Teams. United beat Celtic in the Final. I thought that there were only four teams and one of the others was indeed Sparta Rotterdam but I cant remember the other.
-
I think you're right Rob, four teams, two games each day back to back. Celtic definitely in it, was the fourth team Benfica?

OK, I've waded through the old Alty programmes and found the details of this one!

It's rather worrying that I can remember trivia like that from 34 years ago but for the life of me I can't remember what I had for dinner last night.
-
Here's the answer to the original question:
"Whilst enjoying their break in the Spanish sun, the Robins played a pre-arranged tour friendly against Benidorm Club De Futbol on Friday, 30th May 1980. Goals from John Rogers (2); John King; John Owens and Barry Howard enabled Alty to record a 5-1 victory over their hosts from the Costa Blanca, whose sole reply came in the guise of a last minute penalty."

Gazelle, I am sure the guy I am referring to was called Martin Walsh. One of his brothers was an Alty director at the time and I think he was Tommy Walsh, I think a ginger haird bloke. There were 3 or 4 brothers and well known in Altrincham and they came to the town when they were very young and originally from the same area of Mayo as my Mam.

Tommy was a larger than life character literally at about 6 ft 6 in and built like an ox. he sold up and moved to cornwall but sadly passed away very shortly afterwards. Boy could he drink.
i think you would remember him if you had met him and dont think he was very irish
