Booked the train from Victoria, 09:31 (arr. 11:04) and returning on the 18:50 (arr 20:16).  Reasonable price (by normal standards).  Leaves enough time for a wander around York and the opportunity for some refreshments prior to kick-off.  Looking forward to it.  As someone who travelled on the train to Wembley for the match against Leatherhead, I'm excited at the prospect of what might be possible this year.  Hope we take at least 300.

I certainly hope not, I've just bought mine!

I thought Kaja looked v sharp last Saturday, and he offered a turn of pace that I hadn't seen previously.  I'd start him in preference, I think.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: How many will Wrexham bring?
« on: January 30, 2023, 07:19:30 PM »
On their day, Wrexham are a class apart from any other team in this league and so I think the best we can hope for is not to ship 4 or 5 without reply.  That said, Wrexham will be tired from their dealings in the FA Cup, so we should not write ourselves out of it yet.  On the subject of gaining maximum revenue from the away section, I think the Club will be mindful that not giving sufficient space to those that are travelling will increase the likelihood of them ending up in the home section.  While I can see why you wouldn't  want to give them any advantage, I think the opportunity to increase the coffers when funds are sorely needed, has to be taken.

Is it just me that has no idea what wages are paid to the players?

From reading the comments on here I'm assuming everyone else has full access to the Club's accounts!

Wrexham may well have strength in depth and we may well no longer have Colclough by teatime, but we have to go into this believing we can win.  There's a chance for our players to step up and prove their mettle.  I'm also hoping that given Wrexham's focus will be on league and FA Cup, their performance on Friday will be a case 'after the Lord Mayor's show'.

« on: January 08, 2023, 01:01:01 AM »
I wouldn't count on a large contingent eager to celebrate their cup success, recalling the Cheshire cup match with Caernarfon after the Spurs match! Still, I suspect it could be easily 1,000. The more interesting question is, what will we do for the league match? I think they could bring well over 2,000 for that, and if part of the pop side is closed, could be enough to fill that stand plus the Chequers End. Am I right in thinking our capacity is currently set at 5,000, and is this likely to change?

They took a very creditable 5000 to Coventry.

Altrincham FC First Team / Friday's fixture
« on: January 07, 2023, 09:47:49 PM »
Sounds as though Wrexham's FA Cup match against Coventry was a cracker; a case of the home side vastly underestimating the ability within the ranks of their NL opposition.  The optimist in me would like to believe that Wrexham's victory today may work in our favour.  There is absolutely no doubt that success for Wrexham this season will only me measured on whether they gain promotion to the FL.  As such, I think the team they will put out against us will depend on whether they believe they can beat whoever they are drawn against in the main competition; if they get a draw that they believe they can win, I expect us to face a weakened Wrexham side out on Friday.  That aside, I think Friday's match may be one to savour; I expect a large Wrexham contingent will make the trip eager to celebrate their success earlier today (it's their closest fixture and easy to get to as well).  Fore our part, I hope that we have a packed GR (minus miscreants) and that the atmosphere is buzzing under the lights. #coyr

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: ...and so it begins...

I used to work in Oldham and for many years had to listen to 'Latics fans bemoaning their plight as they witnessed their steady decline through the FL system.  This is nothing new and they are now typical of a fair few clubs in the lower echelons of the FL, for whom the glory days are but a distant memory and without massive investment are unlikely ever to return.  In the current climate the kind of investment needed is simply not going to happen and I'm afraid that Oldham are likely to continue to sink.  For a player of Colclough's ability, the only sound advice would be for him to steer well clear and to wait until a better offer comes in from a bigger and more secure club.

On a related matter, where are the figures that are being quoted on this thread being derived from?  I've never had any idea of what players are paid and I've often wondered how it is that some people seem to know.

Devastated.

It'll either be Rochdale, or a return to his home club Barrow (which makes the most sense I suppose).
Don't rule out Oldham.

A reliable source tells me Oldham have zero money.

It was a bit silly maybe and then some, but then again, what about a certain Morecambe goalkeeper's mother? What about "half a pound of tupenny rice"?  What about "Cantona and Giggs", or Julian and the lineswoman at Stevenage - or indeed any number of things that I have done? And indeed what about a snowball with a brick in it? Anyone can do things that they will later regret, especially when young. It is all too easy to say "throw the book at them", but wouldn't it be better to try and show them the Alty way of doing things and make them long term Alty supporters we can be proud of? I know I am a better person because of people I have come cross watching Alty (and yes that includes you, Phil Taylor :)  ) Let's not give up before we've tried.

Did you hear/witness the behaviour of the individual concerned?

Behaviour by some among our support was disgraceful this evening.  I hope the moron who shouted the most vile abuse at  their ‘keeper through most of the first half is never allowed back in the ground.  He was rightly slung out at h/t.

I'm hoping that we play our normal 1st XI and can see so reason why not tbf.  The team had shown a degree of confidence that was lacking in the early part of the season and I'd want to secure and embed that before the next round of league fixtures.  That aside, I think a strong cup run offers something extra that we've sadly missed.  Looking forward to it.
