Anyway tell me the origins of the "I owe Alty, Alty I owe" chant?

I know Portsmouth sing "play up Pompey, pompey play up"

When did we start singing it? What does it mean?

County sing this one as well. (Obviously a County version thereof...)

I reckon it's 'I O' as in acapella (vocal music) rather than a suggestion of being indebted to Alty for some reason, unless it was tradtionally chanted by members of the crowd who'd gained access to the ground without paying! well I feel indebted to Alty for all the joy they bring me! :)

Probably originally were real words but was transformed into this by drunken slurring.

I always thought that zigger zagger was an old fashioned chant  (40's , 50's) and that kenny had kept it alive for years,

it isan old chant (60s) and it was quite common in the 70s but i believe it was originally a chelsea chant

which was taken from a ska song

It was originally a Liverpool chant from the 60s - there was even a 'Play for Today' on the telly about football hooligans which was called that.
